There was a good pic on here last year, of anatomy of a black bear on a picture, anyone know who posted that, if so would you do it again or PM it to me!
Top of the page there is several animals shown in this thread. Scroll down a bit and there is a bear picture.

Question....is a chest shot on a standing bear facing you a good shot? Saw a few last year and the only one that I had a decent shot on was standing up facing me at about 15 yards. He knew I was there but hadn't found me yet. I was so amazed that he was actually there that I wasn't ready for the shot yet!! Rookie move. When I moved a little he picked me out and high tailed it out of there. I know I've seen 3d bears with this shot but was wondering what the experienced folks here thought.
Thanks
well, what organs would you believe you would be hitting with that shot ?
ChuckC
I guess it would have to be a heart shot which seems like it might be a pretty tough shot. ??? Again, I have see 3d bears with this shot and figured there must be something legitimate about it!
If you miss that heart, or don't know exactly where it is in the first place, you might hit one lung. Do you want to blood trail a bear in the dark with one lung hit ?

A bear stands on its hind legs and drops back down very quickly sometimes...there is a good chance that between the time you start your shot sequence and the arrow reaches the bear it will do that...standing bear is a fun 3D target to shoot...standing live bear is no shot...we have had lot of discussions on where to shoot a bear in bear camp...I think it is simple...if you do not want a long messy trailing job shoot them through both lungs...if you are not sure where those are hunt something else

Nice!! I think I can find those.
I appreciate the input. That's why I asked the question!! Thank you.
David, I, unfortunately, have not had the opportunity to sit around in camp and talk about where to shoot a bear....yet. Someday, I hope to. Until then I'll have to depend those here and anywhere else I can find good advice. Always looking for a GOOD teacher.

Patrick, Glad to see you taking the responsiblity to find out the information you are looking for before you hunt them.
I taught hunters safetly and ibep (international bowhunting education program) for a long time. I can tell you first hand there are a ton of people out there hunting that dont know exactly where the vitals are or how they are arranged on different animals. I also know we see a bunch of people taking shots that many others myself included would never take. i dont think the faceing standing shot is a good shot becasue you cant get both lungs. if the animal was broadside and standing then that is a good shot just watch the leg bones.
When you check out the pics of bear vitals also check out the skeletal structure as well as bear bone is all but impossible to get an arrow thru.
A guide once told me not to shoot a standing bear because the vital organs settle much lower than you expect them to be. He said "always wait 'til they drop back down to all 4 - it won't take long".
Patrick..Legit question that I am sure has been adequately answered at this point in this thread. A lot of 3d targets have a lot to be desired in accurate representation of vital areas or ethical shots. I just booked my first bear hunt, and had to do a little research on the position of a bears vitals myself. Good Luck
Damascus Dave, Good post up until the last line, that comes across as pretty arrogant and condescending. Maybe I interpreted your response incorrectly but that's the way it came across to me. Not very productive to suggest that someone asking a valid question should just hunt something else...Maybe we are not all as experienced as you.

Very nice answer Dave. I will say the opposite of the guy above me. I have had the pleasure of talking to Dave on many occasions, and he says exactly what is on his mjnd, and I appreciate that. The world should not be sugar coated. In Dave's way of explaing things he is saying that you should do your homework before you go hunting, if not you are doing a HUGE disservice to not only yourself, but the animals you chase.
Hmmmm. Thought asking questions of those with more experience than I was part if "doing my homework". I found the last part of his answer also to be condescending and arrogant. If we can't ask questions around here doesn't that just go against the point? Of course maybe Dave was BORN with the skill and knowledge of perfect arrow placement!! I on the other hand am attempting to learn. If it were up to Dave I guess I should just give up and move on. Hmmmmmm
There's lots of other things to hunt, if you don't know where to shoot something, its not bad advice. I've never shot a standing bear but a one lung shot on an animal that's notoriously hard to track probably isn't the best idea. Double lungs are the best idea.
Hope I wasn't being condescending ;)
I, for one, am glad you asked the question, Patrick. Reading the answers has helped to make me a more ethical hunter already. I think this is the perfect place to ask the questions, that those of us that are less experienced, need the answers to. As for huntin something else just because you don't know much about em? Well, if we all did that, none of us would get to go on these "hunts of a lifetime" we all love to hear about. So I say, you get a good grade on your homework! And I'm glad you asked, because I hadn't thought of that!
Punch both lungs and a black bear is really an easy animal to kill with an arrow. One lung and you will need your track shoes...
Good luck to you.

Greta pic, Fireboss! Thanks for sharing!
NOTICE where that heart and the lungs are compared to the back of the elbow (that most folks around here (my home) call the shoulder). If you aim low and behind that "shoulder" and are a few inches behind, you may miss heart and lungs completely.

Had to bring this up top so I can find it easier. Gotta be as prepared as possible for Tues. the First! :bigsmyl: :archer2:
