Due to several leather projects I had to finish first, I am way behind schedule getting ready for the Missouri archery season which opens on 9/15. I always make a new dozen arrows to hunt with but I was beginning to think that I was going to have to hunt with OLD arrows this season. Somehow, I was able to finally get these guys done this weekend.
This year, I went with a more muted, traditional look. The shafts are ash and are stained with aniline dyes. I used Jerry Shriver's flamecrester templates to burn the designs on them. The shafts are sealed with several coats of spar varnish and the feathers used are 5" LW shield cut Gateways in Tre-Orange and Tre-Yellow. The points are 190 grain field points and 200 grain Ace Super Express broadheads. Total arrow weight is around 750 grains.

I sure hope they fly as good as they look! You did an outstanding job on them. I would be half afraid of shooting them for fear of losing one!
good luck!

Those look real nice and I hope you have good luck with them.
Great looking arrows! I especially like the "trad" look. Be sure to post pictures with the game you take this fall!

Looks good! Those designs are sweet
Outstanding work! Hope they work for you now by bringing home the meat. :clapper:
Very nice looking. I've never seen any quite like that.
Gotta like those arrows..well done.
Those look great! I've never heard of flame crester templates before. I assume it's a cutout of steel that you burn through with a torch?
Great looking arrows!
Nice
Absolutely gorgeous
Them's some winners. Beauty's
:archer:
Very nice indeed.
Bravo, those are amazing! Someday that's something I hope to learn how to do myself.

The templates are made out of very thin brass and wrap partway around the arrow shaft. They were originally designed to use with a torch but I know some people use colored pencils or markers with them. I think Kustom King still sells them. I've had my set for well over ten years.
Thanks for the kind words, folks!

Sweet! Does using the flame cresters require going back and re-straightening constantly as you're heating the shafts?
I really like the color scheme, very sharp!
Very nice!

No. I get all my flame cresting done, stain the shafts and then straighten them. Sometimes the heat will really warp a shaft and sometimes they are as straight as can be.
I used to do my flame cresting after I stained the arrows but ran into some problems. You have to wet the templates down constantly to keep them cool and I kept dripping water on the shafts when I did this. The dripped water would sometimes cause the dye to run or discolor.
wow, very nice arrows

Great looking arrows my friend
Those are very nice.
Wow!! They are works of art!! Good luck hunting with them!!! :archer2:

Darren, those are nice. Just don't shoot one where the fall maple leaves are dropping, you'll never find it.
If good looks bring good mojo, critters in yer woods don't have a chance.
