Title: Woodsman Elite
Post by: Scattergun2570 on September 07, 2013, 07:25:00 PM
Some of my local guys have shot them, and claim that they are noisy. A whistling sound..when in flight.. They believe its the vent holes in the head.. Has anyone experienced this?

Maybe a little,  but trust me the critters don't mind! Great head!

I've never had a silent vented head. Some are louder than others.

I've never had a solid head make noise either.

The VPA/woodsman elite are GREAT HEADS!

If you take a dremel and knock off the high sides on the back edge of the vents, they shut right up.  They don't need to be sharp, just not square...

Had some g5 vented like that. I did what Dan did except with 80 grit sandpaper. Quieted down quick.

That's what I've always done to any vented head that whistled and it always has worked for me as well.

Can you elaborate on the "high sides of the back edge"?  I have some I would love to shoot but, there is a lot of noise.

I believe the "high side of the back edge" is on the interior of the cutout, close to the trailing edge of the head. Just break that sharp edge and they seem to quiet down.

Hope that made sense.

Let's see a pic, one knocked down and the other not for comparison.

Anyone have a pic they could share?

Thanks

The 150 grain vented Woodsman Elites make a whistle in flight for me, just like any other vented blade.  I've only shot two deer with them but the noise didn't seem to bother them.

I don't get the whistle from my heavier Elites though, 175 grains and up are solid.  You could look at VPA, all of their heads are unvented except the lightest one.  From 175gr. and up VPA and WE are the same only different color.  150gr. and below the WEs are vented and have a longer profile, the VPAs are unvented and a little shorter.

I'm not sure the whistle from the arrow matters but it is nice to have an arrow in flight, if for no other reason than I like quiet arrows...lol.

Try this:

The red arrows show where to file off the sharp edge(s).

This is great info. I shot the 175, 200, and  the 150 VPA.  I like them all, but like the longer profile of the WW elite 150's and have a bow and arrow combo that needs a 125 right now.
