Title: Shooting Easton Full Metal Jackets w/ Longbow
Post by: bullcalf on September 04, 2013, 05:09:00 AM
Been trying to get heavier arrows than what POC can give me and found Easton FMJ shafts.  Dinked around and finally came up with .75 grn insert with 190+grn head, 5 inch full cut trad fletchings.  Fly pretty nice, but not perfect.  Shooting a Black Canyon TD 3pc custom at 58#.

Any suggestions to get a 600+ arrow to fly really nice out of similar bow setup?

You shooting the 400's?  I'm using a similar setup, but wound up cutting them to about 28 1/2.  Shooting them from a 58@28 Pronghorn.

I use the FMJ Dangerous Game shafts 17gr/inch can't beat it if you want heavy and great penetration from skinny shaft.

I'm shooting them from a new model belly mounted static recurve that is 52 lb, 28 1/2 in draw. 29 1/2 inch 400s with a Woodsman head,. They fly like darts and looks like perfect flight. No paper tuning but no wobbles ect and hitting right where I am shooting.
Now just need the opportunity to get a nice bull broadside.
God bless, Steve

Good info all, Folks.  Thanks.

Cut a little off and they pencil-holed the paper.  Put the big fletchings back on and they fly like darts.  Going to try the heavier shafts, too, however.

God bless and good huntin'

I'm shooting FMJ's cut to 29" with a 175 grains total up front.  These are flying well out of my Montana 55 @ 28, but not as well out of my Dorado 55@28.  I'm still tinkering with it.

I've used the FMJ's a lot, and to get them to fly right, as with most arrows, you should bare shaft tune them. I start with full length shafts of a spine I think is appropriate with a 58# longbow, either 340 or 300's should work. 340's with a fairly heavy point should spine weak initially, so incrementally cut them down from the nock end until they fly straight without fletchings. even mis-spined arrows can be corrected by big feathers, but they are much less forgiving to form and release errors, you should be able to get them shooting great!

Very impressed with FMJ's. Strong, accurate and a good weight for my 50# bows. I also used them on my compound and blew thru a moose.

What spine FMJ would be best from 58# Kanati? would like to shoot fairly heavy broadheads (175-200) and could also use the 75 gr insert...

Fletch some with smaller feathers to check the flight and tune for your bow. Those big ones can hide problems.
