Title: Favorite meals in camp??
Post by: jwbharper on September 04, 2013, 01:15:00 AM
I was planning on what food to pack, I thought I'd ask you all what your favorite foods are to bring hunting? What keeps you fueled during hard hunts?

Any tips to not smell like the food you cooked while in the woods?

I like MRE's for ease and lack of smell. Of course there is lack of taste sometimes too =) I know you could have a set of clothes for in the camp and another for in the woods but that seems like too much changing for me.

Happy hunting

There is also a great flavored bean and rice combo made by Vigo that you can get at the store. It comes in a relatively small, rectangle shaped bag. All you do is add water to cook. Great calories and mixing in sausage is a bonus!

My favorite camping dinner!

velveta shells and cheese! pastas, mack and cheese with powdered milk. mre's. dont forget trail mix and jerky for snacks.

For cooking and camp chores i like to have a pair of comfy sweat pants and shirt and camp shoes, if you not backpacking and your weight and rig has enough room. This keeps the odor off hunting gear and give you a comfortable clothing option for camp.

On our more successful tent camping hunts, we have had organic ribeye steaks, pizza, spagetti, pheasants, deer liver, deer tenderloins, walleye, bluegills and eggs. With the odd salad tossed in, just to keep the pipes clear helps.  I get enough of the Mountain House stuff during the canoe season.

Lamb, Prime Rib, Barbeque Ribs, Walleye and perch, Corned beef brisket boiled dinner(prevents scurvy from all the red meat we eat   ;)   ) and sometimes we'll add in some fresh killed grouse/woodcock/wild turkey breast.  Those are the main courses we eat at the Shrewhaven Lodge Camp.

Apple pie, lot's of exotic appetizers and lot's of amber colored liquid refreshments.

Dinners are considered an 'event' at camp.  It only comes around once a year and savoring them is part of the experience.

I keep all my hunting clothes outside in sealed plastic bins, including the long underwear to keep them away from all the cabin smells (which are fabulous by the way)

It really depends on the size of your camp.
For large camp with at least a Coleman stove and skillet I like something me and my cousin put together called slop. Cut up potatoes, onions, sarano peppers. Cut them down then a can of chile and a can of beans. ( as you see I don't worry so much about the smell of my food).

For small pack in camps. Usually just some of the mountain home type stuff

Stew, Chili, lots of stuff like Ray said. I am very conscious of my scent but I spray down with Scent Killer and hunt the wind. Tough to beat a deers nose no matter what. I have a friend who actually smokes from his tree while hunting. Puts them out with his fingers. He kills lots of deer each year. He says no matter what ya do if a deer gets down wind your done. Hard to argue with a guy that has 7 P&Y bucks and a Boone and Crocket killed with a bow. Shawn

I have a camp chef oven so: pizza, chicken pot pie, lasagna,  spicy beef, burrito. ... pretty much anything you make at home. I like to make freezer meals ahead of time.

5 can and a bag slop. It's basically the green bean casserole you eat at Thanksgiving with some extras thrown in. Can of Green Beans, Can of Chunk Chicken, Can of Mushrooms, Can of Mushroom Soup, Can of French Fried onions and a bag of the boil in the bag rice. Mix all the canned ingredients except the onions in a pot and heat, cook the rice, mix rice in with the other ingredients and add onions to the top of the servings you dish out. Sticks to your ribs and is delicious and easy.

I make deer stroganoff, deer shank meat slow cooked or in the pressure cooker(best), onions and mushrooms sautéed till tinder, all at home. Mix together in camp and heat back up. Mix in sour cream, season with salt and pepper. Serve over wide egg noodles partially cooked at home and dunked in boiling water to finish cooking in camp. Saves a lot if work in camp and is amazing on a cold evening.  Otherwise make a lot of chilli at home and reheat at camp. Them you start eating off the land!!

Dang, you guys eat good! I usually just fry up some spam for sandwiches! LOL. Of course, with a few exceptions, I'm culinarily challenged....  :bigsmyl:   But, I love to eat (hence the screen name), so I usually try to surround myself with good cooks.

First night in camp is always ribeyes or pork steaks and some baked beans with buttered bread. It's a meal my Grampa always made. For lunch it's hard to beat BLT's and chips with local thick cut bacon...mmmm, come on October!

Smothered squirrels in gravy over smashed taters, cat head biscuits with fig preserves, wash it down with sweet tea.

Or a bag of Fritos, a Baby Ruth and a Big Red Soda Pop

First night is always beef and pork chili with fresh corn tortillas.  Then we have baked salmon with a crab and shrimp crust, stuffed pork loin, marinated grilled skirt steak, grilled lemon chicken, seafood pasta, smothered sausage and shrimp over mashed potatoes.  A ton of roasted veggies, rice pilaf, roasted potatoes, etc... as sides as well.  We always grill up a bunch of sausages as well, those are used for a big breakfast frittata with whatever leftover potatoes and veggies are around from the night before.

After the first day, I like to eat venison loins and roasts.   :bigsmyl:  Yeah, sure.  If I'm camping off my truck tail gait at the end of a spur somewhere, I do pack a small grill for when I or my partner do connect.  Otherwise, we eat some freeze dried stuff.  Also a fair amount of spaghetti, chou mein, Dinty Moore beef stew. Maybe a fresh burger or hot dogs the first few days in camp while we still have ice, but after that, it's dried and canned foods.  Usually granola bars for breakfast, gorp and jerky for lunch.  Of course, if we pack in to set up a spike camp, it's all dry and freeze dried foods.  Anything tastes good when you're camping and hunting in the boonies.

Hard to beat cooked food when applicable. Mountain House is a good supplement for what you described. Sometimes on fly in hunts these type are a must for weight concerns. Taste is good, close to very good! Easy to prepare after a long day hunting, especially when you don't want to prepare a big meal. Not much smell, helps with bear concerns too. Lots of variety. No big mess, not much trash. Sounds like the perfect backcountry food. Bags can double for storage if cleaned.

I always love that one morning when you wake up and it's raining.  Anymore we sleep in then get up and make a huge breakfast with bacon, eggs    biscuits and gravy.  Couple pots of coffee to wash it all down.  Sit on the porch and listen to it rain.

Can of baked beans, can of chili beans, can of corn, chopped onion, ground meat.

Brown the meat.
Add the onion..cook it a little.
Add the cans.
Eat when warm enough.
Season to taste.
Goes good with bread.

Simple and high octane.

I personally like Bush's "black bean fiesta"  baked beans with this.

truck camping, anything goes. backpacking, moutain house and other dried food  are about the only way to go. must have a source of good water though, and a reliable stove. I think from my experiments the homemade alchohol "catcan stove" is hard to beat.no moving parts to malfunction, and a bottle of heet will do many meals.

I like whatever can get cooked in the microwave and not make a lot of mess to clean up. I usually cook extra portions all week before I go to the lease so I have good stuff to eat while hunting. I hunt by myself 90% of the time so meals are not a big thing. I do like to get a good nights sleep though and have no desire to be up cleaning dishes when I could be getting much needed rest for the next mornings hunt.

Good pot of spaghetti is awesome after a hard days hunt. chop some fresh tomatoes. fresh oregano, garlic, couple of cans of tomatoe sauce, an onion, brown up some hamburger with the seasoning and tomatoes. add a couple of tablespoons of light red chili powder a little cayenne. simmer just a bit and pour it over some spaghetti . Add some parmejano and some garlic bread browned over the coals and mmmmmmmmmm . Now that is some eatin. But if you are plum worn out just heat up a big can of Dinty Moore beef stew , eat that and cook the spaghetti the next night.
Now if you want to talk some real good food lets talk dutch oven and a good roast with a bunch of veggies cooked in the coals all day long. If you have someone staying in camp. that is hard to beat. Specially when served with some hot biscuits and honey butter. MMMMMMMM Now that is eatin.
Next night you might have some T bones about and inch and a half thick cooked over the coals with some fresh ear corn. I like the white and yellow. Wrapped in tin foil with some butter and salt and pepper.
This will do in a pinch if you are really roughing it.

God bless, Steve

Odd, my first post past 4,000 is about that old can of peaches!

If truck camping I start vacuum sealing a helpings worth of leftovers from whatever the wife's cooked for dinner. Just put it on a plate and set it in the freezer til it starts to firm up, vacuum seal it then freeze it. All you have to do to prepare it is put it in a pot of boiling water for 15-20 minutes, no dishes to wash for the most part and it taste just like it did the night your wife cooked it!! I've done this with all sorts of different types of meals and it really works well. Plus they last a long time in the freezer so you can start preparing meals well in advance of your trip.
