Preparing for the next couple of weeks, I'm wondering if you all can give us some input into what In YOUR mind makes a good kill photo, or hero photo, however you want to say it. I'm torn. My favorite to this point is actually late-season rifle kill in deep snow, so it won't be included here. However, I'd like to see yours? Lets make a pile of them, regardless of the animal. Your favorite shot and why. Thanks!

Both pictures are of same deer, some reason I like the one without me in it more:) although I like both pictures better than my one other big game archery kill picture, a cow elk I took with a compound. I don't really think it has as much to do with the type of bow I killed the animal with as much as it has to do with how many more seasons it to took me to get a deer than it did to get an elk. I missed some real chip shots with my compound and managed to get a late season whitetail on a heavily hunted SWA with a recurve. Who'd of thunk!
I only have one... Last year was actually the first time I took a pic after I took an animal I think. I normally only take a camera when scouting and cut any weight while hunting. Pic quality sucks a d not a perfect pose, but something like this...
I solo hunt most the time so I am partial to pics with the animal and gear with no person in the pic....

Hopefully I'll have one for you before this season is over!

We are waiting patiently! :D
oddly enough, mine without anyone, of a cow elk, is also one of my favorites...

another is of a bull, with noone in them.

Thanks guys! Any others?
Check out the one in the Alaska DIY hunt thread going right now. That one is sensational.

First Trad buck the way I found him minus the arrow I picked up on the trail.
Nice photo Levi. I like those also. But when I see a photo with a guy/gal who is genuinely happy with his or her trophy that can be great also.
G
Anymore I prefer to take pics of mine with gear only or a nice scenic backdrop. It is more about memories and respect.
I always like to take one "as is" when I recover them. Typically they do not turn out magazine quality, but I really enjoy them.
Very personal for me.
Widow double lung. That is an awesome pic!!!!

A mini tripod or gorilla pod comes in handy or you can do it on the cheap and just use a bolt that is threaded for your camera.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/bluegill68/207bw.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bluegill68/media/207bw.jpg.html)
I always try to have the pic as close as I can to fill the screen, it should be centered and if at all possible the sun at the background. I will take the time to set up the shot, removing veg that is in the way, cleaning up the animal a little etc.
Get a digicamera and just tinker and shoot, some of my favorite pics were taken off the cuff.
Sean
I am waiting for someone to post a pick with the pack string of horses with a couple big 6point bulls and a skyline pack out pic... those are allways good to look at!
Nice pics so far everyone. Love that sheep pic!
Ray, that's an awesome picture. Congrats on the ram.
Centered properly.
Contrast to the background
Blood cleaned up.
NO Tongue hanging out.
Angle of camera perfect. Not looking up or down on subject.
Smile on your face.
Well done.
Great hunt and good mojo to get congrats from Barry.

Here's my personal favorite. It's a doe I killed last year with a longbow and arrows that I made. The shot was a good double lung hit and probably the best shot I've ever made on a deer - hit the exact spot I picked out and she went maybe 70 yards before piling up.

So far the canoe pic is my favorite. For some reason I'm fascinated by the idea of using a canoe to reach isolated animals!

Me to!!! I'm selling a bunch of stuff to actually fund a canoe and am doing a float trip in the spring in it for spring bear here in oregon. Have you searched on here and seen some of Ron laclair's canoe pics? He has a couple cool ones also.

those wensel boy are oddly photgenic. It helps when you're holding a buck that size! Love that pic.
Te dall sheep pic is great. I love the scenery and the clean pose. I'll make sure to get some of that stuff in this year. K.S., that photo of the deer head on and the bow layin across it behind in the photo, that is a great shot too. Seems that several of my favorites are from that low, personal angle, like Joes on this page. Sockrsblur, the beard helps!!
The scenery can make the shot too...

If possible, I try to move the animal to a desired location. If alone, as I usually am, I like to use a tripod and DSLR if it's convenient. Take as many photos as possible from different angles!

Great pics, guys! I like this one. Lots of texture and the deer looks almost alive, minus the hole in his chest.

I love this one. My favorite part of a "hero shot" is the look on the person's face and in their eye. I LOVE to see pure enjoyment - like a big kid. Youthful exuberance I guess.

To me, hero shots dont get much better than this
(http://i.imgur.com/HNudlD9.jpg)
I shot this coyote right after the fawns left the coyote was hunting, they were drinking from their mother and spooked. The coyote was shot in the steps where the deer were standing. The coyote followed them for a hundred plus yard and I got to watch the whole show, it just happens to be the coyote was not the only predator in the woods that day.

Here is the buck I shot in 2011. Not sure what makes the picture one of my favorites could be that I shot him on my land,he died in my creek just as you see him, I never touched him before the picture just set my bow there. He was the first buck I ever heard snort wheeze, first buck with my new to me Osage Morrison, my dad was hunting with me, the water has some kind of symbolism . I'm not sure but I just like it.

Wow. What a great collection of photos! For me they all speak to what trad-archery is all about.
Here is mine and as it happens its only 2 days old. I know a bunch of you will have just viewed this on my other post but I figured it fit in on this thread.
I shot my first (longbow) buck and my oldest boy came out and helped me drag it up the draw and shared in the success. Felt really great!

He's not the biggest buck but he was special for me. It was Oct.23/10. I got into my stand (730am)at the edge of a swamp and hardwoods. I grunted and ten minutes later this buck swaggered out of the swamp ready to kick some butt. 15yd shot a little high but in a good way. Severed the aortic artery and he was down in 30 seconds. I was suppose to be in Toronto at a work conference but when I saw it was scheduled for late October I thought I had better places to be!!! O was right!! Super Shrew and an Ace broadhead on a 2216 shaft did the trick!!

This photo is special for me. This is my first pronghorn! The hunt was at the Spearhead Ranch in Wyoming. Can't say enough good things about Moore family, the staff and the ranch. Anyway I was having bouts of target panic and buck fever on the second day of the hunt. Shot over three fine bucks! I was so frustrated that I got out of the stand early and practiced shooting to calm myself down. The third day after watching this wary loner buck all morning he committed into coming into the water hole after a group of does and fawns had watered. Once again things didn't go smoothly as I hit him too far back. He ran quite a ways and I thought I had lost him but the expertise of my guide, Keith Moore, came through and we recovered him the next day. What a relief!! Once again it was the Super Shrew and Ace broadhead that did the damage. Sept.8/10. 2010 was a good year for me!!!
Hero shot of my 4x4 Wyoming Mule Deer. DIY fully unguided. Long story short...hunt included a 1/2 mile sprint thru deadfalls headstrong into the timber the moose came from before. I let eleven does pass along with two 2x2's in velvet. Picked my spot at 30 yards, I honestly do not remember drawing reaching anchor or the release. Shot was from the ground at 13 FEET, all I remember seeing is my white nock hitting exactly what I was focused on. Double lung, busted arrow and 250# of awesomeness before me. I have experienced ground shrinkage before, but this one just kept getting bigger the closer I got.

My favorite from October 1, 2002. My hunting partner Luke Woodruff (the Ursus) killed this goat after I drove it to him. There was another photo that I took that was featured in a Traditional Bowhunter story by Steve Hohensee.

Elk is a hard game to down, good for you.
My first is still anticipated.
Two of my favorites - First was moments after the lifelong dream of taking a color phase bear was fulfilled and the pict was actually taken by Russell Thornberry whom I was hunting with.
The second was from a few years back when I did a lot of turkey hunting. My best buddy called it in to about 10 yards for me.
