Title: Apache Navajo Stick Bow ?
Post by: Wiley Coyote on September 02, 2013, 02:47:00 PM
A friend of mine just purchased a used Apache Navajo longbow. 58" long. Just wondering if anyone knows what the proper brace height is. The string that is on the bow looks new (so does the bow) and the brace height is 7 7/8inches. That looks like too much to me but I have no experience with this model of bow. Any info would be appreciated!  :dunno:

Not sure on Apache. Have him try to get in touch with Roy Hall. His email used to be: navajobows@aol.com.  And biz phone was 903-657-8780. Not sure if they are still the same but worth a shot.  Also, and an option that will definitely get an answer.....have him call  Jerrel Dodson the owner of Archers Advantage in Little Rock, AR. He's buddies with Roy and not only shoots a few Navajo Stick bows but has a ton of them hanging on the wall. He will definitely have the answer.  The phone number: 501-663-2245.  I won't add a link as they are not a sponsor. They should be!  Great shop for Trad guys.

Roy's Apache actually requires a pretty high brace height. Not sure about a 58" bow.....but my 62" Apache performs well at 7 3/4 to 8". Sounds like 7 7/8" could be a good place to start tweaking.Great shooting bows for sure.

Thanks guys. It sounds like the brace height is about right. It looked odd to me because my bows are usually set at under 7inches. Shrew and GN bushbow.

Roy makes a nice bow. I had a 62", Apache TD model. The brace height was  7 and 3/4". Very quiet and a good shooter. Roy is a good bowyer and a stand-up guy. Give him a call.   :campfire:

For the Shrew, I think Ron recommend something above 7,5"

Well Guys, this has helped.  I also just got a Navajo (used) and strung it for the first time 20 minutes ago.  Brace looked much higher than I thought it should (8 1/8).  I backed it down to 7 3/4 and thought it still too high.  But based one everyone's input I'll leave it there as a start anyway.
Thanks to all.  You've saved me time and worry.

Phil des bois-you could be right. I haven't shot my Shrew for some time. Thanks for pointing that out.   :dunno:
