Title: Xenon, Bulb or LED
Post by: 2treks on August 31, 2013, 05:14:00 PM
This question came to mind after following another flashlight thread.
Here you go,

Years ago I bought an LED light that was inexpensive but had lots of power. I bought it for night tracking. It used "D" cell batteries and would really light things up. It was a terrible tracking light. That light would make you see things after a few minutes.

SO,

What is the consensus to this question, LED, Bulb or Xenon?
Also, I would prefer a "normal" battery(AA,AAA)
I don't like a ton of features but I would like "Hi Low" settings.

I will use it mostly for tracking.

So Bulb type and light options, What do ya say?

Not a fan of the LED's for tracking either, Chuck.  Not the most convenient thing in the world, but I still think there is nothing better than a normal lantern.  Outside of that, I prefer a regular bulb.

For me, LED lights do a fine job for a walking light, but I can't stand to use one for bloodtrailing. I agree an old Coleman lantern is best for bloodtrailing, but are not very convienent. I keep a 3-D cell Maglight in the truck for tracking jobs.

Get yourself a Streamlight Survivor.  I'm a firefighter and use one on my gear.  It is a right angle light with a clip.  Hi power LED, can use 4 AA or a rechargeable pack.  Has a high and low setting.  On the high setting you will light up a dang parking lot.  Beam reach is incredible.  Comes in 'hard to lose' colors too.  My favorite flashlight ever, for more than one reason.

LED'S are no good for tracking blood in the dark!
xenon or lantern for tracking, LED'S are fine for heading to outhouse in the middle of the night.

Netural white led.  Best of both worlds. Warm color and high power with variable settings.

I own 3 of the lights the Wensel's sell.  Best testimony is I used it to track a black bear I shot during daylight hours.  Long story...you can search 'Uh Oh' to find out more.

I have used the Wensel light for a couple years, works well.  I like the adaption for a head lamp.

Xenon 2AA durable but nothing special about 100 lumens.  I keep in the pack just for tracking.  LED head lamp and mini mag both two light levels plus red on the lead lamp. Those all go along on the hunt.  4D cell mag in the truck.  Lantern in the truck on trips or one at home and one at farm when hunting local.  I go get one if needed.

I want a nice high power multi level compact LED but need to figure out if one of the light color types you can get would help with tracking.

the neutral white leds were made because people wanted a led that had a color closer to a regular bulb. i don't own one yet but as soon as the new zebra lights are available i will be ordering a neutral white headlamp. i never had a problem with led for blood trailing because the power is so much better and they are so much brighter. but it would be nice to have a little more yellow color light and i think the new neutral white lights will be the ultimate light bow bowhunters. As soon as zebra light releases their new line and i get one i will let you guys know what i think. but from everything i read its the way to go for blood trailing.
