Title: Advice on Hunting Near the Bighorn Mts.
Post by: NYRON on August 28, 2013, 11:03:00 AM
Hi All:

During the last week of September I'll be hunting deer and pronghorn just east of the Bighorn Mountains near Wolf, WY (about 20 miles west of Sheridan). I'm hunting with a friend who lives near Wolf and has access to large amounts of private land. He is an avid bird hunter, but does not hunt big game.

Does anyone have experience with this area? What can I expect for deer and pronghorn numbers? Are there good numbers of both mule deer and white-tails?

I assume pronghorn will be rutting at that time, so I will likely try some decoying as well as waterhole hunting.

I am especially interested in taking a mule deer buck, so any advice in that area is much appreciated.

My pronghorn tag is for area 109 and deer is for area 24...if that helps to zero in on my location.

Thanks for any advice you can provide...

Ron

You should see lots of goats and deer in that area, whitetails and mulies. Access to private ground is a good thing, with most of the big mule deer coming from private land. Here's hoping that we get some cooler weather by then, as we should.
Have fun!

Thanks, Centaur!

Sleepy, What do you miss about Sheridan? Is it a cool town? My wife is considering coming with me on this hunt and we were wondering what Sheridan was like.

If you have time, take the Red Grade Road out of Bighorn for a nice mountain drive, and then loop around back down on Hwy 14. Tongue River Canyon out of Dayton is a great hike with some fun, but difficult fishing if you need a diversion.
You should see LOTS of animals and a bunch of good country. If this is your first time to come to the Bighorns, prepare to be impressed.
