Title: Caifornia opens bow only pheasant season
Post by: Stinger on August 26, 2013, 08:50:00 PM
I just moved here from Northern Virginia and not ready for the archery deer season in progress but just saw that Cali is opening a bow only early (as in before the guns) pheasant season.  Imperial Valley is only 2 hours away and loaded with birds.  12 Oct - 3 Nov.  I think I can be ready by then.

Now to pick the right arrow.  I have hunted them with a gun before but not a bow.  I have a light weight (39# at my draw length) Leon Stewart Slammer one-piece that I would love to try on these guys. Assuming most shots will be on the ground.  Is that enough or are they tougher than that?

Really? Interesting...I'll be working in the Yolo Bypass in October and it's loaded with birds too. And carp, bass, sturgeon in the canals...hummm

I would shoot more weight unless you are not hunting with dogs and can use broadheads! They are pretty tough but a lot more fun out if the air!! Shawn

No dogs and as far as I know broadheads are legal.   Only restriction that I saw was that archery is not allowed on Type A and B Wildlife Areas during the pheasant and waterfowl seasons.  The rules also say no flu-flu arrows.  I don't see any restrictions on heads.

I meant that I won't be hunting with dogs, not that you can't use them.

Why the heck no flu-flus?

No flu-flu's??!!!!  Kind of stupid and more dangerous. Sounds like a law a politician would write. But hey you have a season. Would love one like that here. Broadheads are smart for pheasant. In the air without flu-flu's I'd hesitate personally both from an arrow recovery and safety point of view. If most are runners like here in the east then getting them on the ground would be fun too.

No flu flus!?  What's the point of that?  Sounds like they're looking for an accident.  An arrow will travel a hell of a lot farther than bird shot...

I read the regs, it's "no arrow WITHOUT flu flu's may be used...".

While hunting pheasants, in South Dakota, I found there is a lot of empty air around them even when using a shotgun.  A single arrow will really up the challenge.  This hunt will require a good sense of humor.

Yeah you got it backwards. You have to use Flu Flu arrows for hunting game birds unless you are shooting them on water from a boat. I'll probably hit Grizzly Island this season and hope for some luck. I've never taken a Pheasant with a bow....yet.

Yep, I got it wrong and I read it a dozen times before posting.  Need to get some flu-flu's now.

semi-sharpened 3-blade heads and scorpio's on the shaft,, I like the MA3's for the birds..

I live in San Diego and have hunted pheasants with shotgun in Imperial Valley, Don't know how (LOADED) it is with pheasants, but good luck to you. When I hunted them (made a special trip there)between my friend and his dogs we saw and shot only a handful of birds maybe just where we went, if you know where there are fields loaded with birds look me up I would be up for another trip there, only this time with a bow.
