Title: "OK so now you got one" & you drive an economy car...
Post by: Wolfshead on August 25, 2013, 08:32:00 PM
The "OK so now you got one" thread got me to thinking, what do you do if you don't drive a truck and don't really have access to one?
I drive a small economy car and so does the better half...

I recently bought my dad's old truck, but before that I drove a dodge neon for everything. I still have the neon, but use the truck now for hunting and other stuff. I got by just fine with just the car. I would have to have stuff hanging out the trunk and have to plan a lot better than I do now,but I got by. I think having to get by sometimes makes us come up with much more ingenious types of things.

Here's my hunting and everyday vehicle. I've got heavy duty trash bags and a waterproof tarp in case I get my first deer.

I suggest you think it thru BEFORE you need to haul a deer.  If nothing else, always carry a good waterproof tarp that you can wrap the carcass in to keep blood in, then put it wherever you need to.

In days gone by, I THINK it was illegal to transport a deer in WI in an area of the vehicle that was accessible to you (to keep you from snapping on a tag when the warden stops you) until it has the state tag on it.

Even economy cars can often be equipped with a small rear end carry rack for lighter loads.  Might be worth the expense.

I used to have a small Saturn sedan and once shot 2 deer the same day while hunting with my father-in-law. I had a large trash bag--the kind they sell in the fall for bagging leaves.
I folded the rear seats down, laid that bag out and crammed both deer into the trunk.

Of course, getting them out was a little more fun, since by then they had stiffened into a couple of pretzels, but hey, no blood in the car and my little car hauled more deer that day than my father-in-law's truck!    :bigsmyl:

Hey Wannabe, I had the same Volvo and used it to haul my first three deer. Now that I have a pickup its a lot harder to lift a carcass over the tailgate. Some times smaller is easier.

Yup, bag and wrap them in a tarp and put in the trunk or backseat. I have a great and funny story for you and 100% true. I was 16 and it was my first year of gun hunting and I had a bud who lived 10 miles away and had some nice property to hunt. His younger brother, about 12 wanted to sit with someone, so I said he could come sit with me. Long story short, I shot a small spike, first deer with a gun. I drove a big boat of a car(mercury Marquis Classic) everyone said I had to keep the deer in sight so I could not put it in the trunk or backseat. Likea fool and laughing the whole time we tied it to the hood and used the mirrors to secure it. I was about 4 miles from home an coming down a big hill with a Stop sign at the bottom(yup you know) As I came to a stop the mirror on the driver side gave away and the deer slide off the hood and I actually ran over him!!     :knothead:    The next thing this guy stop and say "I saw the whole thing, he ran right out in front of you and ya nailed him!!" I was laughing as well as pissed off and said no, he was tied to my hood and slide off and he says no I saw it all. I had to show him the ropes and the gutted deer which now had been draggged twenty feet when I tried to back off of him. Needless to say the next one I shot, 3 days later by the way I put in the trunk and left his head hanging out with the tag on it and tied the trunk down over his neck!! Sorry for the long post but it is the gods honest truth and I still laugh my ass off everytime I think of those times in my life!! Shawn

I don't know who Semo's comment was directed too (I'm not gay and it's not a Prius) so I guess it wasn't me. That car is almost bomb proof! It's a 1989 and still going strong. Took it out for opening day yesterday and drove it all over the logging roads.

Start making friends with people that drive trucks! You could also rope it to the top of your trunk or roof. Then just take your car through the car wash to get any blood off.

I wondered the same thing Wannabe1. People at work used to give me a hard time because all I ever drove was a car. Then they started moaning when gas prices soared and all they ever did is drive their huge pickup to work and had never even hooked up a trailer or used a truck for anything other than running over a curb or two,but that's how it goes. I've learned a long time ago you can't always judge a book by it's cover.

I used to own an F-250 for many years until I quit having to haul cars for the restoration business a few years ago.  Now I have a CR-V to save on fuel and I'd rather spend my money on things like bows and more arrows. Tarp and trash bags for me or wrap it in a tarp and tie to the roof.  Not my preferred set up and I'd like another pickup one day but doesn't fit into the family's current budget or lifestyle.  Not having a pickup doesn't make one gay but thinking it does might surely make one ignorant at the very least.

On a more productive note...

I have hunted out of everything from a full sized Dodge truck to a Ford Escape.

Getting a deer on top of the Escape alone is a bear. I have some pulleys I keep in the back and can get it done...but it aint easy.

My favorite method is to knock on the neighbor farmers door and use his backhoe    :bigsmyl:

Kind of a funny story: I hunt near a Catholic Convent, and see and chat with the Sisters often. One night I killed a whopper. Drug it almost a mile, and I was whipped. I was so spent, I couldn't drag the deer into the bed of my truck.  3 Nuns, in full habit, helped me hoist the deer into my Dodge!

bone it out in the field and just carry a medium sized cooler....  here in Missouri to 'tag' a deer, all you have to do is call it in and write the number/code that they give you on the tag.  it's that easy.

Drive what you can afford and hunt the way you want. I hope you have success and post a pic of your transport job afterwards. Plastic is a good way to go or as big a cooler you can haul and go gutless on the cleaning job.

A friend of mine shot a moose back in the Alaska tundra. We hauled/hiked it to my Bronco II and it wasn't hardly big enough, but we got it home. In bits and pieces but we got it home.

Oh come ON you guys.  Most of you think you need a truck to be a successful hunter?  When I was a kid and new hunter in the early 60's almost nobody had trucks.  All the deer we shot back then were tied to the hood, trunk or up on top of the car.  Chuck C you are correct, for many years it was illegal in Wisconsin to haul an unregistered deer inside a vehicle where the tag could be manipulated.  By law we HAD to strap a deer on the outside.  It might not be PC nowdays to tie a deer to the hood or trunk but it sure is effective.  Remember, just because you don't have roof or trunk racks doesn't mean you can't haul your deer there - just roll down the back windows a crack and pass the rope through and wind the window back up.  Easy Peasy.

Dagwood. . . you don't by chance have a long white beard ?  and giggle out loud ?  and hang around with short dudes ?

Pete, my first deer were hauled back on the rear end of a Pinto (with Starsky and Hutch stripe and 60's in the back).

Opened the lil biddy trunk, looped two chunks of rope around the hinges and onto the window, then shut the trunk.  Left me a couple ties to attach a deer to, at least for a short haul home.

Yeah I'll buy a truck. Just as soon as I find a job that pays as much as the one I lost ,my daughter gets out of her cast , and the new a/c unit gets paid for. Till then I'll keep driving my free car, shooting my 200 dollar bow, and using my twelve aluminum arrows that I made. I'll kill deer just same.

Me and Jerry Hill fixed up a VW Bug. Since the trunk is in the front we would put our deer there. We had a rack on top. There we straped two 4" pvc tubes to put our bows in. That bug would go just about anywhere.

Amen to that. You have to do what ya gotta do. Not everyone is well off and we have to remember that. Times are tough.  Eveyone here deserves respect.. . Some of these men are working with what they are given at the moment. And should not be belittled.

Back to the topic. Your best bet, as i have been in your situation is to use heavy duty tarp or quarter the deer up in the parking lot. You won't have no trouble. Or pull deer off the side somewhere and get a buddy who has another vehicle. Or.. You could get a hit h and throw on one of those game racks. They work great. I used one for years.

I drive a Suzuki SX4 Crossover hatchback (it has manly 4x4) with a hitch. For hunting season I fold the seats forward and stash a cut down hitch hauler in the trunk. I throw a blanket over it and haul my longbow and all my gear in the back.

I get snickers from my truck driving buddies but I'm getting 30MPG while their getting less than half that.  :)

90 percent of my hunts have been with small econonmy cars.  My wife has the truck in the family  In both my previous Nissan Sentra and my current Nissan Altima, I have had big game in the trunk, back seat, passenger seat, and partially in my lap.  All depends on how much other gear I have with me.  A treestand and hunting gear/bow can really limit the space.  When I was hunting in Pennsylvania, more than once I shot a deer and dragged it back to the car where I had a rubbermaid tub that just fit into the trunk.  A cut here and there and the deer fit inside.  Then I drove to get some ice for the chest cavity and went back hunting for another.  That is when a heavy duty back and the passenger seat are your best friend.  Another time I had to transport 3 deer, 2 shot by others and given to me.  I wound up quartering them and putting them in heavy duty bags.  Just gotta get creative and not be too hung up on how your vehicle looks.  Oh yeah, always have a good tarp with you in case something leaks.

Got all of a very large caribou into a Ford Focus ZX3 a few years ago.  With me, an old lab, and a bunch of gear.  It was a winter hunt so he had shed his antlers.  Laid the quarters and boned out neck meat etc on a tarp on the floor of an unheated but attached garage overnight at gazillian-something below zero.  Burrito-ed the very firm, partially frozen meat in a blue tarp and put in the trunk, where it stayed cold for the 9 hour drive home (also had some meat in a large cooler in the back seat). Darn proud doing it also at 31 mpg.

Little trailers go with little cars very nicely. I have two rather new Subarus, both have hitches to pull either of my trailers, a canoe trailer with a box or a 4x6 enclosed trailer.

Just remember that if you're tying the whole animal across the vehicle(large or small) put it across the back. The heat from the engine could be disasterous on meat quality.
Of course, so is running over them...

Back then it was routine to drive around town with deer on the hood. Gotta show it off!

My nephew and I were hunting where its legal to take 2 deer a day. He was driving a Honda civic and I was in a Honda accord. We both took our limit and drove to his house with the deer in our trunks. Open and tied down but the drive wasn't too far. Not PC but the deer didn't object to our mode of transport.

Well guys,
I drive 50 miles a day just to work. The other around town miles add up too.
With a truck the best I've seen is 20 miles per gallon. With my car I get 35+ miles per gallon. I ain't very good in math but I know I am saving money.
This is what I have to work with and I figured that I would get some good ideas from "The Gang"
Just started hunting at 52 and this fall will be my first. I will be able to retire in about 5-6 years maybe then I can get a truck or something similar but until then I can absolutely assure you I prefer women!    :goldtooth:

Doug, a lot of teasing goes on here so don't feel like you are getting bashed.  You got what you got, don't worry.

Hopefully you got some ideas to follow up on. Lots of us have or had "VOTT" (vehicles other than trucks)and dealt with it.

Good luck this fall,  hoping you need that tarp or trailer, or bumper hauler.

My dad hunted out of a small Toyota car back in the day. He just laid down tarps and folded the deer in the trunk as best he could. I've also seen smaller deer crammed into the space between the backseat and window.

Nah,
No bothers!
I know it was all probably in jest.
I never really was one to worry about what others think.
Again I love this site and all the knowledge that goes with it I have learned so much
I thank you all for your input it is truely appreciated!

A small car with a deer stuffed in it is better than an empty truck.

A couple guys have mentioned it, two words:  Hitch Haul!  Unbelievably handy for hauling deer.  I don't drive pick ups I'm a Jeep guy and the hitch haul is the bomb even though there is room in the back of my Grand.

A hitch haul should do the job on just about any vehicle you care to put one on.

I hauled many deer home in the back of an old Caprice wagon before that though.

The hitch haul works great but it has a major problem with my Explorer. If I take it hunting I never kill anything, if I leave it I'll have a deer in the Explorer with me on the way home   :biglaugh:

My brother and my hunting buddy have both had several Subaru sedans(not wagons) they handle hauling deer just fine.

I live in the bay area and would absolutely love to see a deer strapped to the roof of a prius. Better yet, park in the whole foods parking lot on the way home.

I once had 3 Sitka Blacktails stuffed into a VW Rabbit. Of course, I was only driving a few miles, from the boat dock to my house, but they did fit. I also had a 300# black bear stuffed into it. That car was a serious piece of junk, and I was a young, single, construction worker, so bad odors in my vehicle weren't of any consequence to me.

Now, though, if I were in your shoes, I'd see if boning out a carcass is legal in your area.  A boned out whitetail will easily fit in a small cooler. I'd then make sure to put the head and hide in a sturdy plastic bag. The last thing you want in your vehicle are a multitude of ticks and fleas.

I have a Prius for my commute (35 miles every day) - if everything goes right my new hunting spot will be closer to work then home, which means the Prius might see some game!

If I am lucky enough to snag my first deer this year I'll be sure to snap a photo of it in the trunk (it's plenty roomy!).

just strap it along the roof of the car like a canoe and go to town and through the drivethru at mc'Ds.
I know some boys that do it all the time when they get a big one.(just to show off).

When the gas prices went up a few years back  I traded my Dodge 4X4 in for a new Saturn s.u.v  and went from 13 mil per gal to around 25 mil per gal . With the back seats folded down the Deer a few Turkeys and a lot of other small game, seem to have no complaints about the ride.

My '07 Corolla gets 37 mpg.  My explorer maybe 12 mpg.  My best spot is 120 miles roundtrip.  So 3 gallons x $3.70 = $11.10 vs, 10 gallons x $3.70 = $37.

Here are 2 mature does in the back of it.  I had room for 2 more since I wasn't hauling much gear.

Last year I had a 180# - 8 point my daughter shot + my two kids, a stand, 2 packs, and a couple seats.  And it was still a pretty comfy 60 mile drive.

In KY one could tele-check their deer and then begin "processing" by quartering and bagging for the car.

My daily driver is a little hatchback Honda Fit, with the rear seats folded flat you'd be surprised at how much room you have for hunting gear in that thing. I keep a big Rubbermaid in the back for hauling out animals and the stand/bow/everything else sits right in beside it with no issues.

I've gotten some funny looks all loaded down and my buddies are always askin me when I'm going to get rid of that thing for a truck but until it stops getting me and all my gear from point a to point b I don't see a reason to change (37 mpg for the commute is pretty darn hard to let to of).

Arguably one of the best threads on TradGang as of late.

Don't forget to redirect the exhaust if you use a hitch hauler.  I've melted large rubbermaid totes after long drives.

Title: Re: "OK so now you got one" & you drive an economy car...
Post by: Brock on August 27, 2013, 02:59:00 PM
I have hauled them in trucks, jeeps, 4 door compact sedans and SUVs.  In everything I did the same thing except truck that I deviated slightly..

In all conditions I would spray bug spray on the deer especially on belly and around groin area.....to chase the ticks and fleas off the deer as I either wait to start field dressing or walk out to my vehicle to come pick it up.

The 30-45 min walk gave plenty of time for the animal to cool and the bugs to run off...if warm I would field dress right afterward and prop stick in ribs to keep them open while I walk out.

When I return would load in truck and field dress if not already done.  In the cars, jeep and suv...i have a large tarp for cargo area or trunk...would put deer in the tarp...folding up sides so it forms a dish to trap any fluids that leak from animal.  If going more than 20-30 minutes from hunt location I would stop at first store and buy a bag of ice and put it in the empty body cavity to help in cooling while it was shut in trunk or cargo area of vehicle.

drive to processor....and that is it.

Back when I had a small car and hunted from it one was a hatch back with a rack.  I just hung stuff on the back of the car tied to the rack.  Another car had a trunk so I just strapped them on the trunk and tied through the windows.  Obviously I am not very PC and don't care what anyone thinks about a dead animal in view. But, that was years ago also.

Now I do hunt every once in a while with the Vibe.  The deck, back of seats and sides of interior are almost all hard plastic.  I just slip a jet sled in on some rubber back carpet scraps with one seat down.  I put gear in the sled for easy acces, but can toss a deer in it if needed.  That carries a dear easy with no contact with the interior and the sled holds all the liquid and ice if needed.  Given the time, I will just drive home and get a truck or get a friend with a truck, but it can be done when needed.  I will not just toss a critter in my vehicle in a tarp.  It would just be too big a mess if things went wrong. I would much rather get it quartered in the field and in a cooler if I couldn't do the sled thing.

If I didn't have a truck, I wouldn't have anything but a hatch back I can put the sled or other large container in.  They are the only way to go if you don't have a truck rater you are hunting or anything else where you need flexible storage.

I also think a small trailer and / or a hitch hall are just too handy not to have regardless of what you have for a vehicle.  The smaller the vehicle the more you really need one or both of them for hunting and all kinds of other stuff.  Most people could easily do without a truck with the extra capacity of a small trailer.

One last option is one I saw a couple years ago.  Late season with a lot of fresh snow on the ground and roads one day I saw a guy tie a deer to his bumper and just drag it home.  No ideas how far he went, but it was a couple miles at least.  Nothing closer than that the way he went for the farm I was hunting.

Used to drive around in nothing but small station wagons Subaru's,Toyota's and Saturn's used to spend more money on the mountain bikes that were strapped to the back than on the car itself. But you would amazed at how much room you can gain by removing the front passenger seat and folding down the rear seats.I have had deer strapped in and on these cars with no problem, like someone already said " better to drive a car with a deer on it then a big truck with no deer in it".

I was going to get a new pickup, problem was it costs $15000 more than the Subaru Forester and the 4x6 enclosed trailer only costs $1500.  That was cheaper than a good topper for the pickup. I was thinking about it again last year and my friend asked "What do you get for gas mileage pulling that trailer?" I said 25 at 55. He got 15 at 55 pulling nothing with his 4x4 Dodge. So I bought a really fancy Outback, now I have two Subarus. Not to be outdone, he bought one as well. The trailer dealer here is the cheapest anywhere in the country and he only sells the better models. The same trailer that I bought for $1500 was nearly $3000 in Sioux Falls.

Years ago, one of my brothers, who moved out of the area, came home to hunt. He borrowed my 1985, full sized, 2-door blazer. There was a trick getting the rear window down to get the tailgate open that I neglected to tell him. (whooda thunk hed git anythin).

This was before cell phones. He ended up bringing the buck home in the front seat of the blazer. I wish I had a picture.

 We all have pick-ups now.

Before I had a tuck, I draped deer across the hood. It works but engine heat is bad if you are going very far. Also, it is a good way to skin up your paint. Perhaps a small utility trailer will work better, and it will have uses all year long.

Who remembers the story the Wensels used to tell about living in Montana and knowing the guy who had a Honda Civic back then. He killed a spike bull elk and drug it off a bank onto the roof of the car. Tied it down and on the way into town hit a bump in the road. The weight of the elk collapsed the roof, so he drove to the fire dept to help him get out of the car!!!!

Back in the days when I was putting my kids through school I've hauled many deer home in the hatchback Subaru I used for a work car. There's no shame in saving money for important things and using what you have.
