Good luck, again, to all you guys!
Bisch
Good luck ,let Casey know a couple of us are heading back to the yurts on September 7
Good luck Brother, heading there Sept 20th.

Good luck man, hitting the road Sept 20th!
Where in Colorado are you guys going?
I know EXACTLY how you are feeling! I leave August 31 for Colorado and I am pumped!! Spent the afternoon sharpening broadheads between bouts with the lawnmower and weedeater. Good luck to you!

Good luck ADK,
I hunted the Roosevelt Nat'l Forest about 13 years ago. We saw quite a few elk and had a great time. It was later in the year, actually in October, and got kind of cool at night. Nice part of it was we were able to drive into our campsite.
Enjoy it!
Best of luck Ken. Looking forward to some stories
What an awesome group thatll be. Ill get those luck pant right out to you along with some other stuff that I hope brings you good medicine.
Is it weird that i would rather skip my trip to mexico to be on this shin dig? Guess ill have to drink a margarita (or 6) to good luck and elk meat at our next get together
Nathan
Good Luck Buddy! Keep a look out for Bigfoot!
... mike ...
I'll be leaving West Virginia for Roosevelt N.F. in one week from today!
Good luck to you and your group... maybe our paths will cross as I will also be in your area!
Best of luck guys and stay safe. It is going to be a great year and can't wait to hear all the stories and maybe even have one of my own. Idaho elk for me.
Good luck. I'm planning on heading out sometime during the first to weeks.
I'm heading to Colorado in 10 days for a week-long elk hunt in the Zirkel Wilderness Area. Going to use my Morrison ILF bow (52#) at my draw length with 550g goldtips tipped with zephyr scirroco 150g broadheads. Good luck to all of you guys who are hunting elk this season.
Leaving the 28th for 16 days on my first elk hunt in NW Colorado using the Northern Mist Classic with ash arrows and Grizzly heads. I'm just a little excited to just wander and everything else will be a bonus.
I hear you... I'm going up tomorrow to hang stands...
Joe
PS 11 days and 8 hours!!!!
Kind of off subject but how much does the hunting pressure pick up when the muzzleloader season opens for that week. I never even thought about it when I planned my hunt and that's the week I planned on heading out. This Colorado deal is new to me. Hunted Montana and kind of decided that more people is better than wolves and griz.
4 point: Where I hunt the MLs don't hurt me any. I pack in to a wilderness area and have only heard one shot in 4 years.
I'm sure others haven't fared so well.
By the way... I think you picked a great week to be elk hunting.
Good luck and God bless!
Thanks fnshtr, I plan on packing into a wilderness area as well. I see this year as more of a scouting trip but never know I might luck into something. My cousin and uncle live out there but they don't archery hunt so they aren't much help.
Are some of the wilderness areas over the counter or do you need points?
Ken, best of luck you and the group! Stay safe out there and shoot straight. :wavey:
Good luck guys. September elk in Colorado will bring you a lifetime of memories.
Leave sept 20 for white river wilderness smoke1953 we are using same setup my Dwyer pulls 52 to my draw ash shafts and 160 grizzlies
Good luck guys! Not much better than elk hunting in CO.
Here's to sore legs, big antlers and heavy meat packs!!
:campfire:
I hope y'all come back with 5 elk and every ice chest full of steaks!! Good luck! :archer2:
Hey Ken, Drew, Manny, have a fantastic time. I hope every one of you gets an elk. Take some pics for us and have a safe trip. :archer:
Have fun and don't get lost......LOL!
Have fun guys. Feel free to stop by and say hello! You're going up the poudre you'll have to pass me at some point.
Good luck too!
You guys must be getting. bet you are losing sleep at night? Dont worry, those hills will make you sleep good.
Dog Tired and Crisp air, there is nothing better.
Good luck Ken, can't wait for the stories and the pictures!!!

Matty, my cousins live in Fort Collins as well.
Good luck, sounds like a good group.
Awesome! Good luck! Something I hope to do some day.

Ken, I don't know what tag you have.....but don't be fussy, you won't be in New York!!
either sex but there is antler restriction and NO i will not be picky!
Good luck gang, I leave in a week.
Good luck. It's an adventure whether you kill or not.
Are the wildfires going to effect anyones' hunt? It seems that half the Western states are burning. wishing you good luck and a safe trip.
Guys,
You can check out your own hunting area by going to this web site http://www.inciweb.org/ for the active/inactive fires. You can sort by state by clicking on that column.
awbowman is exactly right. If you go elk hunting for the kill you won't last long as a elk hunter.
ENJOY!
good luck...Colorado is my home state...Park county area...they should start bugling in a few weeks...
bring some pillow cases...and take care...there are few places more fun to be in than Co in the beginning of Fall...the biggest thing most deal with is the elevation change...
drink more water than you think...and have some advils with you...if not for you ,a bud...and dont talk and walk until you figure it out...LOL...
@ 8500 feet the oxygen is 20-25% less than sea level...
the stars at night are unreal!
have a great trip and good luck!

That's a heck of a deal!, I was able to find a big variety bucket of Mountain House meals on Amazon for a decent price, but nothing like that - good score!
Six days and a wake up and I'm Colorado bound!
Good luck Dallas
8 more days tic toc!!!!!!!!
I actually will start the trip a day before, like a 8 hours drive as an appetizer
:bigsmyl:

I'm heading for Colorado elk hunt tomorrow morning @ 5 a.m. Been putting together my "stuff" for the trip for several days. Taking two takedown recurves, a tube full of arrows and a box of broadheads. Two video cameras and a digital pocket-size still camera. Pretty exciting!
Best of luck guys, I'll be North of you, doing it in Idaho, Sept 7th is my flight.
Are you guys going to get a chance to see Casy ?
Take care and good hunting.

T minus 5 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go get em.
John, you are absolutely right. what could be better than Elk Hunting in God's country with some of the finest people you have ever met?
Ken aka NJloco, to answer your last question... yes that's the plan.
I bet nights are getting sleepless filled with Annunciation for you guys????
Go get em.
Hope you've been practicing with that elk call...also need to know how to cow call. I know you've been running to get those legs/calfs in shape...spending enough time on those shooting skills? Just remember...PICK A SPOT!!
Joe i bought a Hoochie Ma Ma for a cow call, the name of it sounds like hunting in high school...
been shooting a bunch and just go back from buying MORE gear!
I wouldn't be able to sleep with just a few days left before a trip like that... Go Get 'Em Ken!
... mike ...
How much does your pack weigh?
have not weighed it yet, will do tomorrow.
as i go through gear and clothes getting ready to pack i HIGHLY doubt my pack will be under 60 pounds.
Make sure to take plenty of pics, Ken. Good luck!
Ya Ken, take plenty of pics........ after you kill that Bull! Really happy for you guys, go get em' and enjoy yourselves!
one of the few extras i'm taking is TWO cameras, don't worry there will be pic's.
Man I am pumped!
:campfire:
F-Manny
The Hoochie Mama will serve you well. Good luck!
I have a hoochie ma-ma you could have borrowed from me and Charlies trip! I know it works cause I called in 2 elk hunters with it........they had compounds....lol!
I really do not like the Hoochie ma-ma Im not saying it will not work but were it is used a lot the elk know the sound and what is waiting at the other end. I can always tell one when I hear it and know it is another hunter and I'm stupid unlike elk that are smart. One other thing I have noticed is that when someone is using it they call nonstop with it so if you are going to use one I would use it like it was any other call. I ran into a guide that was on horses towing a guy and his girl she was not hunting they were just moving down the trail and every 15 seconds he would hit the Hoochie ma-ma what a joke. Widow
O ya and since I am going to be hunting the same area if I hear you I WILL MESS WITH YOU and call you in LOL. And if it is Casey I call in that would be a bonus. How are you doing buddy. Hope to see you Casey. Widow
Good luck Ken, I too will be flying out on Sept 5, for a Colorado DIY elk bow hunt with two compound hunting partners. We will be mostly car camping in WRNF, but also plan a 3-nite bivy hunt. We will be returning home the 16th. Cant wait too overworked and need a break.
i'm down to buying cliff bars and new, light wool socks which i will get tonight! will have pack loaded tonight and weight it tomorrow so i can see what i need to lose!
Hoochie Ma-Ma? I thought you guys were talking about that purple hooch ya'll were drinking!
Good luck guys
weighing in at around 55 pounds right now and need to add just a couple light things!
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/adkmountainken/trad%20archery/two.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/adkmountainken/media/trad%20archery/two.jpg.html)
You're a big strong guy, Ken, but you might be surprised what those "few light items" will weigh.
You MIGHT also be surprised what a 55# pack starts to weigh when you hit the slopes and are suckin air!
Good luck and have a grand, grand time!
Ancesters guide your tracks forward, friend.
Safe journey and magic memories made,
Killdeer :campfire:
Good luck to all Colorado-bound! I'll be following suit on 9/6.
Looking forward to the post hunt debriefings of all parties, especially the first timers. Godspeed.
Good luck Ken you deserve a trad harvest.Hope you and the gang make it happen.Wish I could have gone with you.Might try a early north hunt though.......Tim
Ttt
55#'s....not to bad, just pace your self, you won't be in Rockwood. At 7-9 thousand feet things are a lot different! We camped at 9,000 and had no issues but did not back pack in......Just have fun and enjoy the high places.

Good Luck My Brother!!!!! May the Great One send good things your way.....
Chuck brother you will be missed, for sure!
F-Manny

I think they ran out of food and Kenny went Donner on them........ :biglaugh: :biglaugh: We should hear something soon I would think.
They must be in a bad cell coverage area. It gets like that in some places.
Rumor has it Kenny was using his Hoochie Mamma cow call too much...and he's now the girl friend of some love sick bull.... :dunno: :nono:
I received a Text picture. They must have made it to town or the top of a mountain. I purpose didnt ask for updates but know at least Drew was still alive mid day today!
Joe, the one thing I heard was Ken and his loin cloth combined with a hoochie Mama call had a love struck Sasquatch following him off into the bush :scared:
I heard it was love at first sight :readit:
You fellas lost or what? Start spitting something will ya?
I hope they are not in those floods out there. Safe travel for you guys.........
I hope they are not in those floods out there. Safe travel for you guys.........
I hope they have some good rain gear, and are ok, if they are in the Rawah Wilderness. Not sure where they went in at but alot of roads in that area are closed, due to the flooding. Might take them a couple extra days to get to phone or internet service.
I am glad I left my camp on time most roads are closed and the creek near to camp overflooded, now I am stuck in Cheyenne with I-25 closed
I just heard about the flooding out there. I hope the guys are safe.
Terrible, I watched the news last night. Thats something that I usually try to avoid. Hoping the best for all out west who are impacted by the flash flooding.
I hope they are OK! as izzy said, all the best to all who are affected.
:campfire: It won't be long now.......
:campfire: It won't be long now.......
Howdy gang. we made it alright. Ive been home in a warm bed since yesterday. The guys should be home by now. Except for Manny possibly. It rained the entire week we were in the woods. All our gear was drenched. The 6 mile down hill hike out of the mountain was extremely treacherous. One day while on top of the medicine bow, a large storm with cold wind and hail blew in. Drew and I retreated to a cave we found up top. We started a fire, dried our clothes and equipment and had lunch. Even left some cave art. When the storm blew over, we attempted to summit the medicine how once again, but the storm came back. We were forced back to the cave. For some reason, that cave called to us for the remaining hunt. Charlie, I was on top of that hill with Drew when he sent the text. It was the only place with service. 11,000 ft and 7miles round trip from camp. The hunt was very rewarding in that nobody was hurt, we survived terrible weather, heavy wet equipment, and up hill in all directions. The trout fishing was amazing, as was the camaraderie.
We ran into a lot of trad hunters. Some were smart enough to have Llamas carry their kit. What I would have paid to do that. I have a plan for next time.... My buddy has goats as pets. Time to make a call.
When we finally got pushed off the mountain by the weather, we were stuck in the poudre canyon. The road was closed. We had lunch in Glenecho, then detoured through a mountain pass dirt road to Livermore. They closed that behind us. There were boulders that slid into the roads off the hill sides. We made it to Denver, stopped in at RMSG then got a motel near by. And dinner in a college town near Denver. You should have seen all the strange people there. First thought was that they were all sitting at my table. That was the most expensive dinner I ever had in Colorado. Finding parking for our rigs among the electric Prius and smart car armadas led to a parking ticket on my truck. I still don't know why I got it. Izzy, any idea? I think it has something to do with inferiority complex.
The hunt was memorable as they come. And the most physically and mentally challenging. I plan on going back to that area again, as we were into elk every day. Especially around that cave.
John is a mountain goat and carried us all the way. Drew taught me a lot spiritually, and I'm not just talking about purple hooch. Ken and Manny kept our bellies full with trout and taught us about shrooms...er Mushrooms. That just scratched the surface. I'd like to leave the rest for the team. They have all the pictures. I couldn't handle one more ounce. Next time all I'm packing up that mountain is a knife to make everything I need.
Brothers, Thank you again for the gifts and for the memories. It was the best elk hunt to date, and I will never forget it. I couldn't have shared camp with a better group of guys. You all are my brothers, my mentors and my family. I appreciate everything you all are and I'm privileged to be part of the pack.
Casey
I was getting worried about you dudes.Even though no elk brought to NY (I was looking forward to some steak) Im glad you had a good hunt buddy.
Those treacherous hunts are sometimes the most memorable to me. Never met John but the rest of you fellas are some of the bestest folks around. Miss ya Casey. If I dont draw Wyoming next year maybe Ill join you. Any hot tubs near that cave?
Glad you guys made it out safe and sound, and it was an adventure not a disaster..
I am resting easier now knowing you guys made it back ok.(answered prayers)
Congratulations!!
God bless,Mudd
PS: still waiting to hear that the "moose hunters" made it back safely.
It's really a relief and good to hear everyone made it out safely. I was getting worried after watching the flooding on the news. I knew it would be a fantastic time and a memorable hunt no matter how the weather was. Looking forward to some pictures.
A storm at 11,000 ' will make you spiritual!
Kill or no kill, September in the Rockies is a wonderful experience.
Glad to have y'all back. Can't wait for the pictures
wow where to begin, oh wait thats easy! going to take 2 days to clean and dry gear!i had the time of my life and we were in to elk almost every day which apparently was not easy to do considering to what we heard from everyone we talked to, most had problems finding or even hearing elk so we were in deed doing something right! so many chances, either wind changed direction or ask "cbr" (Casey) about the guy yelling YEAH MOOSE, GET MOOSE!!!! as he had a nice bull elk coming in! going to take a full day to down load pic's but i have some good ones including video of what we believe is a P&Y Shiras bull moose!
Glad you guys made it back safely.
Been thinking about you a lot.
Casey, when you coming back to NY for a visit?
QuoteA storm at 11,000 ' will make you spiritual!
You got that right!
Glad you guys made it home with some good memories!
Eric
Looking forward to pics. Sounds like a great trip
1 lesson learned was do not close in to close to a HUGE rutting bull moose with a loud camera! had to change my shorts after that one......
i learned so much on this trip and can not wait for next year! really want to give a big thank you to my bro John for showing me so much about elk sign, reading maps, elk habits and so much more! big thank you to Casey as well for over all camping help as i am a green horn at tent camping and he helped tremendously! side not, my pack will NEVER top #55 again!
Welcome home, gents. Spiritual indeed! The mountains have a way of humbling us beyond imagination!
it rained EVERY day but the fist yet it never dampened out spirits! there was a whole lot of sitting around the fire drying gear, here is Drew and John doing just that!

wet mocc's and boots, common theme.

heart does go out to those in Fort Collins where we passed through that lost their homes and lives, terrible storm. as bad as the weather was we were actually safe at 10,000 feet elevation.
Great Pics Ken, keep them Coming!
Glad you guys made it back and had some close calls. Maybe next year close the deal. Looking forward to the rest of the story.
Looks like you fellas made Colorado proud..
The ones of us that matter anyway.
The hard part is done. You've learned the elks bedroom and next year it will be fire roasted heart for dinner.
Todd
I would like to Thank All You guys that I shared Elk Camp with this year for making it a Great Hunt! Despite the weather Mother Nature threw at us. You could not ask for a better bunch of Guys to hunt with. Everyone contributed and We all had opportunities to make Elk meat. I look forward to hunting with all of you Guys again. I hope you can all make the Planned 2015 Alaskan Hunt.
Thanks Again - John
this is John who i am sure all of us consider our "guide" and brother! enjoying a nice fire.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/adkmountainken/CO%20elk%20hunt/john2.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/adkmountainken/media/CO%20elk%20hunt/john2.jpg.html)
Sounds like you had dinner in the People's Republic of Boulder, a great place to avoid when I am in Colorado. But, you did get to go to RMSG; I suppose nobody bought my bow that is on consignment there, though.
Too bad the weather got the way it did; I just got off the mountain after being poured on the last couple of days; the good part of that is that I can go back in a couple of days.
It sounds like you New Yorkers had a fun experience in the Rockies, in spite of the lousy weather. Better luck next time!
I, too was wondering "WHAT?" college Town. I had a friend 2 decades ago who taught at the University in Ft Collins. Stopped there once on way from MT to SC but didn't see much and it was a long, long time ago...
Folks put themselves on slopes and areas that Angels fear to tread... and then stuff happens.
Storms can be humbling beyond words...and devastating to us puny people.
Man, that makes me envious!
Sounds like a great adventure with too much to remember it all. INTO ELK EVERY DAY! You can not ask for more than that.
What an experience, thanks for sharing.
Thanks to everyone for having me in camp with you . This was a great group of guys to hunt with and would hunt with them again in a heart beat . I just got out of my sleep deprived coma and haven't uploaded pics yet. I also just had to get a new computer as mine was locked up tight when I got home and no amount of pleading was getting it to free up.
I learned a lot from John and also Casey as we hunted . The knowledge between them is unreal.
This was one of the most physically demanding hunts I have ever done as Casey and I went to the medecine bow trail and 1100 feet several times . The cave we found was awesome and something just kept pulling us back to it. That's where the elk where anyways and we needed the shelter a couple times.
Casey is hard core , he took me up some steep grades and hard terrain , dang near killed me a couple times .
It was a great hunt and experience , cant wait to do it again . I will add pics soon , Drew
This hunt was more than a hunt! It was search for adventure with my brothers, and I loved every second of it, even the most excruciating ones!
Colorado is a beautiful place

fantastic! keep up the pics and stories!
L.R.
fishing was FANTASTIC even through all the heavy rain! caught some big brookies in one of the ponds and a slew of smaller ones in the small stream by camp, had to feed the fellas and Manny ran the fry pan!

Was real happy to get that "cave" text from Drew, wasnt sure if scuba gear and a speargun might have been more appropriate til that point. Glad u all made it safe and from the looks of it had a great time. Looking forward to hunting with u guys in a few weeks so ill save my many questions till then. Must be getting old, started worrying like an old hen after a few days of no words :D
Nathan
we were a little worried too bro.....
lots of scary moments, one that comes to my mind immediately was Drew taking a bath in the trout stream........
Sounds like something he'd do. In his defense he probably needed it pretty bad though. :biglaugh:
