Title: Broadhead decisions...
Post by: Spitfire Htr on August 18, 2013, 05:30:00 PM
Just wanted some input as to which broadhead you guys would shoot out of a 44# @ 28" Groves magnum? I draw 29" and I'm shooting 31.25" Easton axis 400 with an 1.25" aluminum footing over a standard insert. The arrows are tuned and flying great. I put a 150 grain snuffer out front this afternoon and they flew like darts, but I pretty sure there will be penetration problems on deer with this size head. I am needing something in the 150-165 grain range, preferably a multi-blade head. I think I'm leaning towards the following: WW 150, Steelforce hellfire 150, No Mercy or Eskimo 4 blade. You 2 blade guys can chime in too.   :D   Thanks and God Bless, Steve

Ace Standard. Super tough, easy to sharpen, and easy on the wallet. Darn good heads.

Snuffers will work fine on deer with your setup. If you're set on using a two blade, Zwickey Eskiomos or Deltas or STOS are among my preferences.

STOS are some mean two blade heads.

Zwickey 2 blade Eskimos and Deltas. I shoot both from my 57# Groves and 52# Fedora.

The same thing I shoot out of every bow I own.....German Kinetic Silverflame or Silverflame XL, 150gr.

IMHO, one of the best heads made (and they should be for what they cost!).

I have tried or hunted all that you have listed and a bunch more. I have finally settled on Simmons heads. I love everything about them. My wife likes Steelforce in that range and they have performed well for me as well.

Magnus stingers and Buzz Cuts come in 150gr both four and two blade, can't go wrong with them in my book

X2 on Simmons.  Using the 165 Interceptors this year.

I shot Groves bows for years and also Snuffers. Since Groves is no longer I shoot an ILF hunting bow but for broadheads I found that the three blade Razorcap, which has weight adjustment ferrules, to be the deadliest head I have used since the 50's. All but two animals have gone down in sight and a moose I shot only took 3 strides. I have had similar results with the original Woodsman and I imagine the VPA has to be as effective. The best feature of the Razorcaps to me is the ease of sharpening a three blade head and the steel in them, which is stainless, holds the best edge of most any broadhead I have tied. I also have had good results with the Eichler Phantom by Muzzy.

Personally I would shoot a non vented four blade such as magnus with the bleeder blades

VPA 3 blade will work fine, easy to sharpen with a jewel stick and 3 On 1 design penetrates fine out of most any HUNTING weight Bow! Shawn

I've been using Grizzlies with great success and have never bent one. They fly like no other 2 blade that I've tried. Not too expensive either.

Most any really sharp head will do.  You might read the other broad head topics being discussed currently too.  I agree with many that shooting one that gives you personal confidence is a huge factor especially given that most of our shooting is done instinctively.  But, the sharpening factor is also really huge. You need to invest in good sharpening stuff as well.

All here are great suggestions. I shoot the Steel Force Hellfire 150gr.. I have been blessed to have harvested several nice bucks S.F. Hellfire. They are sharp right out of the box, they're truly tough, fly like darts and you cant beat the price!! Best of luck with your choice!!

I would probably try a simmons head at that bow weight. Penetration of a two blade but they cut a hole that rivals any other head out there.

I would also vote simmons.  They are tough and cut good holes plus they look gnarly.  I have killed deer with the landsharks and interceptors and will be shooting tree sharks this year.

Harvested many a deer with Snuffers great head. Now that I am much older and shoot lighter bows ( 45#) I have gone to 2bd Deltas and Eskimos. Still get pass throughs and good blood trails.

Just sharpened so the hair POPS off your arm.

I think I will go with the time tested and proven zwickey eskimo's. With this bow, all my shots will be from the ground using my ghillie. Thanks for all the suggestions. I can definately see some sharks in the future, but I know that 150-160 grain heads shoot lights out from this bow.
God Bless, Steve

Good news. These days, as opposed to the 1970's (and before) there are LOTS of broadheads that are built well, have true weights, tune terrific, and will keep a game-killing edge.

It was more of a dice roll 4 decades ago than it is these days.

I'm a fan of 2-blades though. Whether hunting with 46-50 pound recurves or 70 pound bows of a different color.

Wow, here is a loaded question...LOL Everyone will have different opinions, but for me, if you go 3-blade I say VPA. If you go 2-blade then I say Simmons Sharks.

Good luck and happy hunting!!!

I find it funny about light weight bows and 2 blade heads and such. If you are hunting deer they are relatively thinned skinned and the ribs are not really a problem. I have killed a few deer when I had shoulder surgery and was shooting a 42# widow at 28.5"s and a 160 grain big old 3 blade snuffer and 8 gpp. Got holes out both side on 2 big does and a coyote from end to end one year. Make sure it is sharp, keep the shots 20 yards and in and stay off the shoulder and you will be fine with most any scray sharp head! Shawn

For whitetails....the actually selected choice will most likely suffice.... The issue is exacerbated and may likely stem from the actual numerous BH's available to choose from, thus, possibly cluttering one's mind.

One's own established confidence will dictate and govern future selections.

Friend, you may be the most verbally articulate person on the web today. However, I do agree with what you said. There are basically to many great broadheads on the market today and the ability to choose the "one best" for any given bow is hypothetical in nature. Shot placement will always be the determining factor in speed of recovery. Thanks for you very wise comments.
God bless, Steve

Spitfire Htr.....the honorable complement has been both gratefully and humbly received.

My knowledge wouldn't fill a thimble; however, I wish to share what does reside w/i the thimble as effectively as possible.

An individual's convincingly effective communication has often misled the masses, so caution may be warranted as the result of a seemingly sound delivery, in actuality, may be flawed.

Thank you....
