What do you all use for Baselayer clothing for cold weather? I use ASAT Camo. I've been looking at the First Lite wool products. Quality gear but pricey. I thought I would see if you all have suggestions before I start buying clothing...
Any Suggestions?
I use Indera mills products. Made in USA and priced right. Either polypro or the wool depending on my intended activity and temp.

What's the difference between the poly and wool?
The polypro is lighter in the version I have and I use it for earlier in the year and longer, shorter sits. I also have the poly military stuff that works well also.
The wool is very warm. I make sure I almost have nothing over it on the walk in and use it for late season long sits.

Under armour cold gear. The stuff is incredible. It fits tight and wicks the moisture away from your skin to keep you dry. I will not hunt in the cold without it. It's a little pricey but worth it.
Woolpower Ullfrotte Merino Base Layers
200 gram under KOM wool keeps me warm when it gets really cold. Still need a wind stopping layer when the wind is howling.

Ditto!
I live and hunt in S TX so we don't get much in the way of real cold weather (40 degrees is like freezing cold to me. I don't know how you northerners make it as cold as it gets up there!) but I love my UA Cold Gear and have gotten rid of every pair of regular cotton longjohns I used to own.

First Lite.

+1 The Ulfrotte is really good stuff.
My favorite, without a doubt, is silk. Nothing better as a base layer.
where is a good place to buy silk baselayers?
Any wool base layer should perform great, but Merino wool has great advantages over other synthetic and natural materials.
I read a review by Guy Eastman some time ago and I think he did a geat job at explaining the layering basics and what to look for in the different layers.

I have been using KUIU layering system for several seasons now and they perform great. I love their products, they are definitely high quality products.
I'd go with wool. I got some last year and love it! U don't need first lite. There are other brands

Bighorn gear he is on sponsor classifieds
Checking out wool power now... Those of you who use wool undergarments. What weight wool do you recommend? Wool Power offers 200gr or 400gr wool.
I have decently heavy pants and coat.
I always start with a layer of silk - great stuff.
Smartwool next to skin works really well.
I have some 400g woolpower, its good stuff, just a bit to bulky.
Finally broke down last year and bought some merino wool, minus 33, absolutely love the stuff.

I have ulfrotte, smart wool, and minus 33.
I like minus 33 the best.
I like wool even though I live in the south. I wouldn't go more than 250 grams. I'd just put 2 if I needed. A wind proof vest really makes wool shine.
I sent you a PM with a good place to get non-camo merino wool. You can never go wrong with First Lite.
Straight wool or a thermax blend which us wool/poly blend. Thermax can be bought for 20.00 or so.
I use Minus 33 merino wool in mid and expedition weight according to how cold...along with a lot of other mixes in layers. Still looking for the warmest, fewest, thinnest, lightest total weight of layers to keep me warm.
Minus 33 merino wool for me too. Great price for a great product.
I used to wear under armour cold gear but all I did is freeze with it lol . I picked up some merino wool stuff at gander way better for a cheaper price. The under armour was ok aslong as you kept moving .The merino wool is also more comfortable to were imo .
Another Minus 33 or Smartwool lover here. I often use a lightweight layer of an Underarmour loose fit shirt over the wool, followed by a camo shirt or jacket. If it gets really warm during the day I can shed the wool layer underneath and remain comfortable.
Merino wool for me. Poly is ok if it's not too cold but I don't like the way it holds odor. If you ever sweat in poly it seems like you never get the BO out no matter how much it gets washed or in what, even bleach doesn't seem to get rid of the smell. Seems nice and clean when you put it on after washing but pretty soon the dreaded BO is back. I never have that problem with merino wool.
I need to replace some Justin Charles (out of business) pieces I've had for years. The Minus 33 looks pretty good.
Kuiu merino for me. The Under Armour is good, but the tight compression fit didn't work for me. I'm fairly hairy and by the end of the day wearing the stuff it felt like all the hair on my arms and legs was tangled in little knots - drove me crazy.
The Minus 33 stuff looks good. The prices are very reasonable.
Merino wool Minus 33. I'll never go back to poly pro.
Did you all get the midweight or heavy weight minus 33 wool? 230gr vs. 400gr.

I got mine off the big auction site and saved some money. Great stuff.

I got the mid weight, and I would recommend the quarter zip top. Very nice being able to open and close the neck.
X2 for the Woolpower.
I used the medium weight Minus 33 last year. It doesn't even looked liked it was used. I will be buying all the different weights.
I use silk as the first layer, covered with medium or heavyweight Ufrotte merino wool, depending on the temps. Over that, a wool shirt and KOM Bowman jacket. That's for all day sits in below freezing temperatures. If the wind picks up, I try to wedge in a light wool vest between the shirt and jacket.
Wintersilks (they have a website) has a good variety of silk weights and blends, reasonably priced.
Kuiu merino. All I wear these days. Light weight, warm and doesnt smell even after several days.
In my opinion, after years using synthetics as first layer, Under Armour and similars, nothing is superior to the merino wool shirts from brands as Kuiu, Firstlite and others. Really, the important is the material, not the brand. Dry faster, weight, smell...all is better.
Sorry about my english
Silk. As it gets colder I use wool over the silk. IMO there is no better combo available.
Midweight
I got the minus 33 mid weight a couple years ago and the heavyweight this summer.
Ullfrotte is a great product, worth the price. I would get the 200 for a base layer.... you can wear it all week and it has little smell, not so with polypropylene. I have usually buy a heavier 400 top for colder weather and then just some lightweight/medium pants and top over.... (Cabelas Microtex, etc). I also hunt in Texas so it's not usually too cold. I have not tried the Under Armour but it would take a lot for me to switch from merino wool....good luck.
KUIU :)
