Title: practice question??
Post by: RNTBuck on September 04, 2007, 04:02:00 PM
ok, guys, once again, i am very new to traditional archery and am wondering what my practice regimen should be. ive been shooting at 13 yards, and am "ok" at this range, but not great or even good, but i do hit the target most every time. do i continue to stay at this range for a while, or should i be shooting various ranges? am i starting too far? too close? how should i go about training myself to be proficient? keep in mind, i am just getting started, so i want to go about things correctly, so that i dont develop bad habits, poor practice, etc.

Rick Welch taught me to never shoot from the same place twice and to only take about 15 or 20 shots a day and it seems to work very well.  Shoot with one arrow.  Then walk up to the target, pull it out, and fling it over your shoulder.  Now go and shoot from wherever it landed.  Repeat 15 to 20 times and you will be doing just fine.  Of course do these things only after you have your form down.  If you are still working on form, then get very close to the target until your form is ingrained in your muscle memory.

Form first, until you have your form firmly ingrained to the point that it is automatic, you don't need to worry about hitting the target.

Once your form is down pat, then you can start moving back and shooting at different distances.  It takes awhile, but if you get the form down and practice diligently, it will all come together.

One thing I found when I was starting out was that if I tried to shoot at the longer distances, I wasn't as good and it affected my mental status badly.  Wait until you can shoot effectively at the shorter distances before you really try to stretch things out.  Alot of deer are killed at less than 15 yards.
