If I get them, I take a hot bath with some bleach in it.  Do this as soon after exposure as possible.

I have also taken bleach directly to them.  It was extreme but it was relief.

Some guys say "meat tenderizer"  helps relieve the itch. I used Absorbine Jr and think it worked somewhat.. For keeping them off of me for the last 25 years I have been using the permanone/peritherin sprays on my clothes..before that I used sulfur powder in a sock applied from the waist down, you just dust your bare skin.

Permythrin really works to keep them off. But that doesn't help after the fact.  You may try hitting your thumb with a hammer or something, just to take your mind off the chiggers for a while.   :dunno:

Once they get you there isn't any relief. It's all about pre-treatment.

There's anti-itch creams with hydrocortizone, 2%, that work kinda,Campho-Phenique, kinda too. Nasty buggers they are. Kinda why I'm not out at our range stumping right now is cause I'm not in the mood to bug spay up and go.
You would not guess the trouble I had to spell Campho-Phenique correctly since what I have here is generic.    :bigsmyl:   Hope it works for you. You are infested. Sleep well did ya? :~}}

I got some Epsom Salts Foot Bath. It may just be plain old Epsom Salts in a more expensive package - I don't know, but it brought some relief. After soaking in hot Epsom Salt water, dry off and apply a bunch of rubbing alcohol. It worked for me as well or better than anything else I've tried.

The Epsom salts and alcohol works. Follow it up with some cortisone ointment and a strong over the counter antihistamine pill. The itch is a histamine reaction and something that controls that inflamation helps a lot.

clorox kills them faster than anything I ever used and the burn is worth the relief to me.Have also used white vinegar, kills them without nearly as much pain but may take an extra treatment. We get them bad down here

nothing helps really. a hot bath. a hot hair dryer on them will make it burn.... but it burns sooooo goood!!!!! its all about pre- treatment. i could not count all the bites i had on me this year. it looked like i had a chiggar thong on!!! im not joking. i was bit from head to toe. i had over 1,000 bites... probably closer to 2,000  the dr said it was the worst case of insect bites he has ever seen.

i  just thought my wife made horrible faces when she looked at me naked but this one toped them all!!!!

Germtrol was available when I was a kid & took the itch right out. Check online maybe?

Last year & early this year I used Permythrin with outstanding results! The past month (same 30 oz bottle) I've seen ticks walk right over saturated areas around my cuffs & legs as well as arms. Yesterday had an attached blood sucker on my knee. That was after douching with permythrin beforehand. Not a tick or redbug fan either! Ideas?

If I know I've gotten in them I get in the shower, have a bottle with 30/70 bleach and water, spray down, rub it all over and wait a couple minutes. Never even knew they where on me. Bites never developed.

In the past i've had chiggers by the hundreds a number of times. To the point of having a fever from them. They are mites. Under a magnifying glass the look just like tiny ticks. The best thing to rid yourself of them is head lice shampoo. Buy as much as you can and soak in it. They'll be gone in 2 to 3 days.

They bore under your skin & stay for a while. A few will even crawl out & bore back a day after you got in to them leaving another red itching mark.

Myth they do not bore  into your skin.

I live in the chigger infested Pine Lands of NJ. I have a farm with 36 acres of chigger infested woods. I have had more ticks and chiggers in me than I could ever count. I don't understand why I have never been diagnosed with Lymes disease. My hunting partner has had four bouts of it.

I am actually starting to build up an immunity to the chigger bites and they don't bother me as much as they used to. I used to have an allergic reaction and the bites lasted for 6 months.

It is probably too late, but don't scratch them and put on Chigarid.

Since I know, if you are like me you scratched them and opened them up, get Chigarid and put it on each bite. It is the only thing I have found to relieve the annoying itching and burning.

You can get Chigarid in most chain pharmacy stores. I am looking at a bottle as we speak, since I have an archery range in the chigger infested woods and just got infested again like you.

Good luck, Chigarid all the way!

Gil

I have lived in chigger & tick infested areas all my life.  I've been outside all seasons and have had more bites than I care to remember.  What has worked the best for me is to take a large handful of baking soda and add it to a bathtub of water – take a bath.  It kills all the ticks and chiggers and they don't itch nearly as badly.  Try it, it works!

My wife gets chiggers bad sometimes and swears by the "bleachy bath" to combat the itch  - smells like a swimming pool in the house when she is done.  I don't get them as bad, generally - I prefer the dig 'em till they bleed routine.  Benadryl will help if it doesn't put you to sleep.  All of the topicals I've seen for itch/bug bites/chiggers in the pharmacy are the same active ingredient as Benadryl (diphenhydramine).  Be aware that if you take Benadryl or generic diphenhydramine and use the topical as well that you are increasing the dose - don't exceed the max dosage by accident by using different formulations.

I looked into the chigger thing a while back - the information I read about them debunked the "burrow in and live under the skin" idea - the information said that by the time you know you've been bitten the chigger has fed and left you ..... but there may be many more still crawling around that haven't bitten yet.  Thus washing up right away is a good idea - it will kill/remove the active ones before they bite.  Other than that it is itch control and healing.

We were always told that the chiggers burrowed into your skin and were still alive.
I recently read on the internet that here in the U.S. we don't have any chiggers that are supposed to get humans, so they die as soon as they "bite" you.
Their saliva in the open wound is what's itching you now.  I use lotion, but it doesn't help much.

If I treat my chigger bites they are gone in about 10 days.

If I do nothing they are gone in about 10 days.

I've stopped trying to treat for the chigger bite itself and just focus on treating the itch.

Hand sanitizer seems to help some.

God bless,Mudd

Never found anything that worked once you get 'em.
Best medicine is prevention. Old Army trick I still use---Hartz 3 in 1 tick collar around each ankle.

ok to prevent chiggers, I knew an older archer    :bigsmyl:    high stockings over his socks and pulled over his pants leg opennings(he said the chiggers couldn't get through the small holes unless  it had a    :help:   rip) Others I've seen have duct tape their boots  to their pants.(you might be a red neck)

I work in the ER.  They do not bore into your skin.  They bite you and their saliva causes a massive release of histamine causing terrible itching.  The key is to use repellant when in the woods and IMMEDIATELY when you return to camp or home wash and scrub yourself head to toe.  This will rinse your body of any still left on you...it's the ones that stay on board and bite you over and over that do the most harm.  I got em bad last year because like a bonehead I relied on my Thermacell while sitting in a natural ground blind and forgot to treat my body.  I also delayed showering til many hours after returning home.  This made for a horrible 3 days after.

Treat your body and clothes and wash up after the woods.  Nail polish and the rest of those old wives remedies are crap.  Try rubbing alcohol for cooling relief and steaming hot showers.

In the boy scouts they told us to look for the side of your legs that had the most bites. Shave a strip of leg hair next to that. Light your leg hair on fire on the side with the most chigger/bites, and when the little buggers run across the bare strip...stab them with an ice pick.

Tried just about everything on here once.  Bleach always worked for me, seems to dry up the bites.  If you have access to a pool or hot tub get in one for at least an hour.  That seems to help.  I use permythin to keep them off when hunting but just recently got them at my kids football practice of all places.  He is not to happy with them either.  Of course, more beer works as well.
