Just looking to see if there still is enough interest in my annual bunny hunt(The Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt)!! I am hoping to have 100 people give or take and want to make this the best one ever. We have raised over 25 thousand dollars for St. Judes over the years actually quite a bit more than that. Just making sure I have the interest before I really get this going. It is the 3rd. weekend in Feb. as always and open to all. Do a search for some old threads and you can see what this is all about. Lots of bunnies this year as alway, but maybe even a few more than usual. We have kill 16,17, and 18 bunnies in consecutive years a few years back and have taken over 450 shots in just one weekend. Post here if you may want to come. The official thread will not be posted until Jan 1st. 2014. Have Fun!! OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn
 :goldtooth: :archer2: OH YEAH!
You can count on me bud!!

I sure hope I can make it Shawn, some of the best time I have had were at your hunts.
What town is it in?
The town of bethlehem NY, Selkirk to be exact. This will be our 11th.hunt. You are just required to bring a prize for our raffle and there will be a food sign up when the thread gets started. We kill lots of bunnies and have always had a great time! OOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn
Thanks Shawn,I'm going to try and make it up. I'm sending you a pm with a couple more questions. Nick
Was hoping for a bit more interest, as I said we have had over 100 folks in the past. I want to get the number up there to raise money for the kids!! OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn
It's early yet Shawn. I'm sure you'll get the people since this will be the last one.
I'll talk to Izzy at OxTAR next weekend and see if we can drum up some interest.
Last one!!! Oh man now that is a let down.
I wish I stared to go from the beginning.
You won't see rabbit hunting like this. This is how rabbit hunting was 45 years ago.
You will see more rabbits in one day here than you will see in your entire life!
Too bad its the last one. Don't miss this one it is rabbit hunting at its finest, plus a lot of fun and good food.
OOOOOHHHHHHH YYYYEEEEAAAAHHHH!
We believe we have so many rabbits due to the rabbitat(lots of wildrose and thick overgrown valleys with field edge) and the fact that we kill so many, this leaves food and cover for the ones we don't kill. All my life we have had tons of rabbits, I know of several times with 6 guys we killed 36 in a day, that is the limit for everyone, this was with shotguns. My wife and I were talking and we figured that I have killed close to a 1000 rabbits in my 42 years of hunting them. Just 3 years ago I killed 40 in a week. We have killed over 40 with the bows in just 3 weekends. I know it is a long way off, but I am looking for donations for the raffle and keeping this up at the top can help with that. I have two very nice bows that I am donating this year, as well as some other cool stuff. We will have a warm up or two for the guys that are close as well!! This should be the best ever so plan on attending if at all possible!!! OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn
OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn
I have it on the calendar.
Bump for a great time and cause.
Barring playoff basketball game I am in!!!!!! May even be bringing Hunter too!
David
David, whatever ya do you have to make it my friend!! We miss ya!! OOOOOHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn
For sure!!!!
I'll be glad to see my BH bow (still at your house) get passed on to the next generation.......
I am planning on it Shawn......out of the blue last week Hunter actually brought it up, saying he wanted to hunt bunnies again and hoped he wasn't busy that weekend!!! QWould love to bring him again!
David
Well, if you insist! :) It would be awesome if I could get a kid or two to come along. I'm sure Tyler, Jen, or Jeff would love it.
Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Just let me know when the warm ups are. I need all the practice I can get.

Your fresh outa kids man, yours are all adults now. :bigsmyl:
"Warm-ups"! Yea, Right! Last year on the opener of deer season I was looking at a rabbit near target #8 (near my place) and day dreaming about the next JLMBH when a nice buck walked right up on me! Busted for sleeping with my eyes open! :dunno: Oh Well......
... mike ...
I'd really like to join everyone for this hunt!
As I said all our welcome, we like to have enough young ones to do a seperate youth hunt. We have a couple pieces that I take several adults and we hunt from around 930 til 1130, we eat and than we hunt til dark as a group. If the little ones cannot go on the adult hunt we have plenty to do at the house and Cindy, Allison and Heather watch them while we are out hunting!! I have a new area as well, so plenty of cover to put 100 guys through. Maybe Curt can post a snippet from the video we did a few years back. Bill Langer actually got 7 kills on camera, which is amazing considering the type of hunting. This is not for the weak at heart, we get cut-up and bleeding pretty good. Brush pants are a must and leather gloves help a lot. Even a small pair of pruners come in handy to cut a quick shooting lane or to help get out of the multi-flora rose. Ya must wear a piece of orange clothing and no points with sharp edges are allowed. I find blunts or a hex head work best, judos are a no-no as they snag on too much stuff when trying to get a shot thru this brutal cover. I will give a little teaser, I have a beautiful 63' Bear Grizzly(dogleg) that will be just one of the bows in the raffle!! Shawn
Just a few pics from last years small gathering
the Hunt Master himself!!

Not sure if you can get the full effect, but that thick stuff behind everyone is where the bunnies live......And that's the LIGHT cover!!! :scared:
I'm in.. Looking forward to this..
In addition to the brush pants and gloves, I like a pair of safety glasses. Even the thorns have thorns
Dad and I are in
Glen, good idea!!! Tim and Gary are regulars and they get to a warm up or two. Looking good so far! OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! Shawn
Not to hijack your thread Shawn, but I want to let all these NYers know about OxTAR this weekend. See Trad Events for more details.
Can't wait for this bunny hunt! Gonna need some new brush pants for this. Or possibly a suit of armor. I have rarely seen rabbitat like Shawn has. If you are a pusher, and aren't bleeding, you're doing it wrong. :biglaugh:
Here's a little history of the hunt that I wrote up a few years ago.
"Bunny, bunny!" Shawn Leonard let's out the tell tale cry after "jumping" a large multiflora rose brush pile and sending the cottontail rabbit fleeing. The "bunny" cry continues down the line of traditional bowhunters until the bunny either gets away or the jubilant cry of "I got him" rings out.
The above scenario repeats itself dozens of times over the course of the annual Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt (JLMBH) weekend held in late February. 2009 marked the 7th consecutive year Shawn and his family have hosted the event. 2009 had 87 traditional bowhunters participating from 6 states including 19 youth bowhunters. The event is now carried out as a benefit hunt for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The hunt is announced via the online chat group of TradGang.com and attendees must be TradGang registered.
The bunny hunt did not begin as the Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt, in fact it wasn't until the 3rd year that it gained its name. It actually began due to the unfortunate luck of Curt Cabrera, one of the inaugural hunters. Don Haines of Western New York had been hosting a bunny hunt and Curt and Shawn had attended and were looking forward to attending again in 2003. However, a stray rifle bullet by a young hunter pierced Curt's upper leg incapacitating him for quite some time. He just couldn't make the bunny hunt and was feeling dejected. His good friend Shawn simply said, "we'll just hold our own when you're ready"! It took virtually all year for Curt to heal, but the first annual Northern New York bunny hunt was scheduled for the last weekend of the season. Word was spread via TradGang and 17 hard core traditionalist showed up for the event. As part of the requirement for attending, Shawn asked for people to bring a gift to be given away to the successful shooter who challenged the "steel rabbit". The "steel rabbit" is exactly as it sounds. It is a hole cut in ¼" steel and confident archers are sat down on a bale of hay at about 15 yards and asked to shoot through the hole and pop a balloon. Pop the balloon and you win! Miss and you get a shattered arrow! The people who showed up the first year brought such nice stuff that Shawn's mother, Joan, said "you can't give that nice stuff away for shooting through a hole". Shawn agreed and a raffle was set up. The traditional archers also thought the stuff was nice and $350 - $400 was raised from the raffle. Shawn didn't know what to do with the money, as the hunt was not held for profit, but his mother Joan didn't hesitate and simply said "give it to the kids at St. Jude". The first year was such a fun time and success Shawn and his family decided to host it again in 2004. In 2004 more traditional archers showed up and even more money was raised, over $1,100. Plans were being made by Shawn for 2005 when tragedy struck and Shawn's mother passed away. Not to be deterred by misfortune, Shawn, his father Alfred (Jake), his wife Cindy, and his daughters Nicole, Allison, and Heather all vowed to continue the bunny hunt tradition. There was a significant change for 2005. The hunt would now be held in tribute to his mother and would from that point forward be known as the Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt (JLMBH). The JLMBH would continue to be held as a St. Jude Children's Research Hospital benefit event.
The 2005 hunt was a huge success as was the 2006, 2007, and 2008. The 2009 hunt was the biggest ever and the traditional archers rose over $5,300 for St. Jude. The total contribution to St. Jude has exceeded $10,000! Not bad for a bunch of traditional archers who are just looking for any reason to get together for fun and hunting.
The JLMBH is a pretty special event and some amazing friendships have been forged by the annual hunt. What makes it even more stunning is that Shawn hosts the event out of his personal home and at considerable personal expense. We all know this wouldn't even be a possibility if it weren't for a very understanding wife and family. Shawn's wife Cindy and his daughters are remarkable! They work tirelessly for weeks prior to the hunt and during the 3 day event (Friday evening until Sunday evening) they are non-stop in setting up and taking down food for the army of hunters. The JLMBH has gotten so large now that it takes a lot of extra hands just to make the event run smoothly. Fortunately, there is a core group of hunters that willingly jump in and help (Curt, Jamie, Izzy, David, and many more). To make the event even more memorable is that the rabbit hunting is excellent! The hearty hunters have braved temperatures well below zero, snow so deep you sometimes had to crawl, rain, wind, and briar thickets so dense that you can fall down and not hit the ground. As Shawn likes to say, "after a good rabbit push, if you ain't bleeding you ain't hunting right"! Despite all these obstacles the JLMBH archers have been able to continuously improve on their take of rabbits. The first year 2 rabbits succumbed to well placed arrows and the tally has continued to grow with 19 being made into meat in 2009. Not bad for a bunch of yahoos running around with nothing more than a stickbow and arrows.
Who knows how this hunt will evolve in the future. It is getting so big that some things will inevitably change. Right now it is open to anyone who wants to come. Based on the recent growth and success it is just a matter of time before it outgrows Shawn's house, hunting grounds, and his family's ability to support it. However, for now 2010 is being planned and Shawn, Cindy, their daughters and a few good men are already working to hold the JLMBH to benefit "the kids at St. Jude". I'm sure Joan Leonard looks down on her family during that special weekend in February and feels a great sense of pride!
Shawn, well done my friend, well done!
Oooo I almost forgot the pocket pruners, I told myself to remember them this year and my old memory failed me again.
Hey who is that good looking guy in the last picture with the sun glasses, go tee and orange brimmed hat! Oh wait a minute that is me! I hope I loose weight for this years pictures!
Shawn is there going to be that great chili again this year?!
Shawn, I'll be there.
Yes, Cindy always does chili, there will be a sign up posted when the main thread gets going. Lee always a pleasure!! We will need lots of food this year and everyone will be required to bring some type of food, drink and of course desserts, not all three as I said there will be a sign up. Paper plates, cups, milk, cereal, coffee. OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn
I am bringing an extra large bowl!
I have been gracoously been invited to a bunch of warmups. If I am not mistaken the last one registered 8 hunters and 12 rabbits killed. Action galore for a great cause. Hoping my son in law Brian can make it this year Shawn
My favorite hunt of the year, every year. Ive been blessed beyond words with friendships and associations made through the hunt. I really could care less about the rabbits although I love shooting them. I like to see the smiles and hear the laughs. Now that my sons attend I am in my glory watching them hunt and learn how real men and women are supposed to act. I only missed one since I started attending due to a family vacation, now all of my family vacations are planned around JLMBH. Crazy huh Jim?
I sure would like to join in on this. I look forward to the official thread in Jan.
Do you guys use beagles?
I would'nt miss it. I just hope to get in on a warm up or two. Maybe I'll be able to finally hit a rabbit...
I great group of guys, a great cause and great action.
I would do whatever you have to to make it to this hunt. It is that good.
Beagles are definitely welcome :bigsmyl:
Shawn is the best dog of all! You gotta see him dive into those rose bushes... ... Hope this year he uses a bull-horn, not to loose his voice... Maybe even have a Gatorade I.V. hooked up to keep leg cramps at bay... :archer2: ...
He would still lose his voice with a bull horn.
Nice guys!! Roger we always have a beagle or two but we drive the bunnies like deer. We surround a piece anywhere from a couple acres to 15 acres and than send pushers thru. We jump on piles and kick everything in sight. We have gotten as many as 70-80 shots on a single push. This hunt started out with 17 guys and gals the first year and we have had as many as 105, we all hunt together and it makes for a great time!! OOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

I'm good for 6 bunny killers. You folks from across the country who are deterred due to the king distance need to reconsider. It's an epic weekend and must be experienced to believe how much fun can be had with a bow in hand.

bunny bunny :smileystooges:
I was out brush hogging most of the day, I was doing it for my deer hunting but than spent a couple hours doing it for the bunnies. I saw no less than 30 rabbits today hogging. Made some lanes for us in rabbit valley and the island of trees. I also did the circular filed and the old road with the middle hedgerow getting a working over as well!! Should be awesome hunting this year!! OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn
I know they are great in number around me, so that means you must be LOADED Shawn.
My lil guy has been practicing....he is so excited. He actually invited kids from school in his entusiasm. So I had to explain why that wasn't happening.
Can't wait...
I'd like to join in for this year. I live in Philadelphia, and would be willing to shuttle some people up from the area if anyone is interested.
This is shaping up to be big

Just watched the video again. Would be a good way for anyone who is interested to see first hand what a great weekend it is. The challenge would be to find a copy of the video.

I know where the Selkirk Lighthouse is! We put in there during a hell of a storm on Ontario.
Count me in. :archer:
This Selkirk is near Albany Charlie.
Its directly adjacent to the south albany airport. The planes just about taxi through the back of shawns yard.

Still all good. Same distance just in another direction!
I just ordered three dozen Douglas fir shafts for my little 46# Browning Wasp and a pile of blunts, I'll be ready!
Charlie, we will be by the South Albany Airport. I thgink we might get the actual role call thread going soon.
Hopefully Shawn will be back for that.
What is the date?
I think Shawn starts an official thread and roll call usually just after midnight on New Year's.
It's always the third weekend in Feb.
Shawn was removed from the sight and I'm not sure he will get back on in time.
The hunt is still on as far as I know.
Stumpkiller you PM box is full
This really sounds like a challenge.I would like to come!
I'm in with a couple more guys from southern zone NY.

No, you didn't miss anything. Ill get in touch with him today and help in anyway I can as far as announcements. Shawn is not on TG at this time.
Some of the snow drifts where I work are almost three feet high! Getting flashbacks of the JLMBH a few years ago... ... Maybe someone can post pictures.

BUNNY!!!!
Hey there Chuck lets not get to carried away with the snow dancin remeber what happened a few yrs ago.
As mentioned above Shawn told me that he would try to be in touch with Izzy in regards to the hunt which with out him being able to officially organize it may be smaller...to bad really as it's been a fantastic fund raiser for the kids.
The first hunt
http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=000001
Later that same yr Shawn had a bunch at his house and it grew from there . . . special thanks to his mom and dad
No word yet boys but hang in there. Shaw would never let his land be overtaken by rabbits of any sort.
I am getting rabbit fever. Can't wait!
I can taste the chili now. Izzy any word from Shawn what he needs this year for us to bring? Will be doing the raffle again too? I have to believe we will for St. Judes.
I am looking forward to this.
Hope we can get a definite on a date,
I'm working on wrangling up some donations now!
Well guys sadly I have to throw in the towel for returning this year. My wife's last day to work in N.Y. is this coming Sat. She wasn't able to work out an extension.
She is taking a contract in Lafayette LA. after that. I'm not working this time of year and without having her there working it's just not a feasible trip for me to make.
I wish everyone well. I can only imagine the fun that will be had.
If someone will P.M. me Shawn's address I will send something to add to the table. Happy hunting everyone.
bretto
Too bad Brett, we had a good time last year.
Oh no Brett!!, too bad is right! Last year was a blast
Too bad Brett. Maybe next year we will have to have a yearly "Bretto St Judes Hog and Alligator hunt"!
To bad Brett!

Izzy, you messed up, if you would have picked him up every day from then to now you still could carry him ;)
Im the one who needs the carrying these days. :biglaugh:
Izzy, Isn't that the sole purpose for having boys? We nurture them, feed them, just so they can drag our stuff, maybe even US, outta the woods when we get older?? Well, its at least a benefit anyway!!

Brett PM sent.
David
It sure would be nice If Shawn was back on Trad Gang to promote this hunt. JMHO.
What are the actual dates?
Hey Ed, he always does the 3rd weekend so it should be the 15th and 16th. He hasn't forgotten us. Remember he is a town worker so I am sure he has been working a lot with the weather. He should have some official word here soon.
Mamba, PM sent.
Thanks Pete, look forward to seeing everyone!!
For sure Ed, it will be a blast. Are you bringing your daughter? Matt said I should bring mine but she is still to young yet. Maybe the pheasant shoot though.
She wants to come in the worst way. I think I will have to see what the weather looks like.
that would be great. how old is she?
I am posting this for Shawn...please read carefully...

Hi everyone, due to the fact I can no longer post on Tradgang, it has been very tough to put this years hunt together.
It is still on, but will not be the huge hunt I had hoped for, but it will be a great one!
It will be like always in the fact everyone should bring a prize or prizes to be donated to the raffle table.
Tickets will be $20 a wing span(Cindys) and you can purchase as many as you like.
This year as I have done the last couple of years there will be a cost to all coming of $40 a person(kids 16 and under are free)this will get you a wingspan of tickets as well. All of this, 100% of the money raised goes to the St. Judes Childrens Hosptal!!!!
I am than asking for $20 per person(again kids under 16 are free) to cover food for the weekend,!!(SO TOTAL WILL BE $60 A PERSON OVER 16 AND INCLUDE A WINGSPAN OF TICKETS AND ALL YOUR FOOD).
I have room for 40 guys and gals and kids to sleep right at the house.
If you would like a room the closest place is Glenmont NY which is ten minutes away!(google it) Rooms will run around $70 a night but again ya can stay at the house if you would like.
If you would like to bring some type of food dish that would be more than welcome. Chips, jerky and condiments are always good as well.
We can always use coffee, tea and cocoa and also paper plates, solo cups or styrafoam cups as well. Cereal and Milk for guys staying here. Plastic silverware and paper towels.
You guys can post what you are bringing so we dont get too much of one thing.
The most important thing is sports drinks and water, we need lots of them. Try and Bring what you figure you will need for a couple days as far as water or sports drinks go!! (AGAIN SPORT DRINKS AND WATER ARE VERY IMPORTANT)!!!
Guys who have done this hunt know how important it is to stay hydrated. WE will have potassium available to help with the cramping that someone always ends up with!!(ME! LOL!!)
Cindy and my girls will take care of all the food prep and the included food will be sub platters, pizza, wings and Cindys venison chili, chips and such as well any dishes you folks bring.
THE HUNT DATES WILL BE Feb. 15th. and 16th. you may arrive anytime after 7am on Saturday morning or if you let me know you may arrive Friday the 14th.
I can always use a bit of help setting up on Friday as long as I dont get too many guys.
There are tons of bunnies this year and I recently killed 9 in about an hr on one quick hunt with Molly. Dont worry it was in a spot we dont hunt much.
We will be doing the youth hunt and that starts at 10am. We will do the door plant and the horse pasture push with the kids and some adults.
We will than do our usual hunts, Old Road, Island of Trees and the Honey Hole, than unto the Squirrel woods and the circular field. We will end up in Rabbit Valley as always around dark. We will than head back to the house for dinner and the second best part of the hunt, THE RAFFLE!!!
Remember guys this is still about the hunt!! It is a hard, tough hunt but is well worth the effort. We have had some years where there were over 450 shots taken and as many as 19 rabbits killed in two days!! I cannot wait to see you all again!!
******************************
Here is the most important part of this post!!! READ THIS PART TWICE!!!!!
E-mail me at deerman406@hotmail.com (it is case sensitive) LET ME KNOW IF YOU INTEND TO COME AND IF YOU HAVE ANY KIDS COMING 16 OR UNDER AS I WILL NOT COUNT THEM TOWARD THE TOTAL OF PEOPLE COMING., I NEED TO HAVE A COUNT BY THE 5TH. OF FEB. SO THAT WILL BE THE CUT-OFF TO LET ME KNOW IF YOU WILL BE ATTENDING. THAT GIVES EVERYONE 2 WEEKS AND GIVES ME TIME TO GET THE HOUSE AND EVERYTJHING READY!! THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE!!! OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Shawn
I am in for the weekend. I will put a list together of what I will bring.
See You All Soon! :campfire: ... ...
... mike ...
Hey Curt, is WRRV still matching donations, or was that a one time thing?
I will be attending as usual. This time I am going to bring a Geritol newcomer with me. (My old man). I will bring whatever is left over on the list since I am the closest. I will also make an attempt to receive pledges from local businesses $per bunny...I guess they won't mind since its essentially a life for a life....so put your game face on boys and girls. See u all soon.
I will be there and my back flipping daughter Jennifer will be joining me.
Shawn, count on me to help lead groups as usual and I will be there Friday to help with setup.
I'll bring a big ol' plate of alligator bites as well.

Saw a BUNNNYYYYY hunkered down today. He thought I couldn't see him. I let him be because I had a lead rope in my hand and not a bow. :knothead:

Hope we don't need it... :dunno:
... mike ...
Safety pins?
That's cause Mikey can't sew!!
Used up a Personal day today before I lost it and went bunny hunting.
Lets just say Bunny numbers must be up.
My buddy and I didn't bust our tails, just took our time and saw over 40 BUUUUNNNNNNNNNNIIIEESS!

Man o man, I got a pack basket full of arrows and plan on shooting at least "Fifty Eleven" rabbits, maybe more. :readit:
Izzy have you been smoking the evidence?
What evidence?
Twice in one day you made me laugh reading tradgang. Pretty good. Are you bringing both boys to Shawn's? They are going to have a blast. Peter keeps asking me about going.
I need to make more arrows.
Lost 0ne and broke 3 more. saw about 15-20 rabbits, connected on 2 but wasn't able to catch up to them again even though we tried pretty hard.
Great Bunny Numbers this year folks.
We need a little more snow though!
Pray for a good coating of white stuff in about a week or so.
How many guys are bringing beagles?

Yes Sir, I hope to bring both. They are looking forward to it and Noah has asked about Peter. You better bring him, he's part of the crew for sure.

Id like to bring my dufus but if I bring him home with so much as a scratch or a thorn in his coat, Mama will not be pleased with me and me being in my prime and all, that just aint good.
I'm sorry but I won't be attending the Bunny hunt this year. My job in Daytona took a front seat again.
Lee
It's okay izzy want mama to get the wooden spoon out that's coming from the little fella did you say you were bringing some chicken :biglaugh:

Izzy, a bloody tailed, pricker filled beagle is a HAPPY beagle. :D
I have a nice little kids starter package in the works. A Little Mohican longbow, 1/2 dozen carbons, armguard, tab and a hip quiver I'm making to go with it. My girlfriend is making an assortment of paracord accessories like a rifle sling, call carriers, bracelets, etc.
I can't wait for this hunt and raffle!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!
Hopefully going to start the finish work on the Hickory self bow I have been working on for the raffle. I received a call from my son last week stating that he wants to come with me. He lives in Manhattan and needs to reconnect with his inner redneck. We havent hunted together in ten years. I am pleased.
Can't wait to see that bow Glen, you do a really nice job. That is an incredible raffle prize. I think I am going to have hope for the hunt!

Man, I want to come again so bad it's killing me, unfortunately my hunting buddy can't make it and I have no way of getting from here to there :banghead: :banghead:
Where are you at in comparison to Selkirk? I am coming from the south.
Getting close and Im thinking the snows gonna be just right. The angels look over this href hunt and the weather usually treats us right. :p
Sleepy Hollow??, If you're from the Tarrytown area, you can catch a ride with me, I'm in Buchanan.
Thanks Ed, Sean, I am 3 miles south of Tarrytown, think we can work something out?
Steve, absolutely! I can make it to the TZ bridge in about 15-20 mins depending on traffic. sending you a PM
Sean, left a message on your cell, Steve
Got it Steve, Sorry, was putting my girlfriends son to bed. give me a buzz tomorrow
I love it when a plan comes together!
Got the all clear from the boss to make it this year. Just hope Karma keeps her nose out and nothing goes wrong. Been looking forward to this for a couple of years, since the last one I went to in 2010. Now I have to go through my pile of arrows and get some ready for this hunt. Looks like we will have good snow for the hunt. This is going to be an awesome time.
Would like to give a big  to fellow Trad Ganger "longshadow" from Oconto Falls, Wi... I made mention about this hunt and St. Judes and he sent me almost seven dozen arrows for the raffle!
When I opened the box all I could say was "Wow!" Bunch of bunny busting arrows (less points) for sure!
Thank you again Alan! :notworthy:
:clapper:
Way to step up Longshadow.
Just Finished making a few bunny arrows.

Nice job Charlie. A little red on the point end will look great.
I did that last weekend Glen and lost both bunnies down holes. I did track one for quite some time and managed 2 more running shots at him but no luck.
That's why you see the modified point I made in the photo for next weekend. :readit: It seems standard steel blunts come out easy and only poke little holes.
Due to the considerable blood and the hour we spent tracking, I thought a dead Bunny was imminent. It would have been my first with a bow. I still am pretty bummed about it for the rabbits sake.
Will those qualify for Shawn's hunt. I didn't think bladed heads were allowed. I do like the look of them and the colour, easier to find.
Chuck you can stop dancing now.
I might have to dig out the ole snowshoes!!!!
Wow! Wish i was in town that weekend! Sounds like its going to be much fun.
Lineman, Its as much fun as you're ever going to have with your clothes on!!!
Tony,
That head will qualify, the rule is no Broadheads for safety reasons.
This head only has a razorblade bleeder attached. It will break off on the first shot. Truth be told, its the only one I have and will likely not make it to the hunt the way I have been breaking arrows lately.
There is just something about stone walls and wood arrows that do not mesh
Charlie, I know what you mean, I have a bucket full of broken woodies waiting to be repaired. May have to put some together to have enough arrows for this weekend. Just need to work out the right head for them. I have a packet of ace glue on's but will need to work out something for the rest of them. i think I have a bunch of blunts lying around here somewhere.
We got some snow locally now. 14" of new fall since this time yesterday.
Bunnies be tunnelling!
Tony, I saw a thread where a guy flared out the back of the blunt. I have seen guys screw wing nuts to the end of teh arrow too.
I have lost quivers full of arrows crawling through the brush at shawns.
WE have good Bunnny Snow. OHHHHHHHH YEEEAAHHHHHHH!!!!!
I have some ash shafts that I will foot with some 2315 aluminum ends. I can screw in some different options that way. I have done the wing-nut thing and also just a washer behind the field point. How much snow did you guys get over there. We got about 8" up here.
Going crazy plowing snow can't wait to hunt bunnies and get away from all the Looney Tunes in Connecticut "yuppies" bunny buunnnnnyyy can't wait to see you all talk to you soon especially you Izzy IOU a few little fella
I have a kida arm guard made a donated by Chis Fannin "juneaulongbow" and a dozen cedar kids arrows made and donated by Charles Brake "cbCrow". Thanks guys! I'm searching for more stuff.

A paracord rifle sling that my girlfriend made that she's donating along with some other items.
One week!!! Got a new feller coming, his mind is gonna be blown.
I just received the prototype Stalker Jackal last night, a three piece long bow, 60", 51@28. It's coming to the Bunny Hunt so you can all have a chance to handle and shoot her before she gets sent off to the next guy in line.
I think you guys will like this one.
David
I have an idea..... Let's all just stay home next weekend and watch TV! Nevermind them bunnies... :dunno:
... mike ... :D ...
You do that Mike.
The snow is going to be pretty deep and we don't want to waste time looking for the top of your head as we walk around. :)
I have a better idea! Maybe we can all go to the movies in town... A group the size of ours is sure to get a discount! I hear they are playing a "South Park" marathon... How Cool Is That?
... mike ... :p ...

I'd rather watch you get ravaged by rose thorns and an amorous buck rabbit.
You guys are no fun... I'll tell ya what's better than bunny huntin'..... Filling the cracks in my garage floor with cement! Yea, that's it! :p
... mike ... :D
Hey Mike, I think you are on to something there....... let me know how you make out ;)
Well you didn't tell us you had something fun like that going!
Why, 200 hot melt glue sticks in a pile near the middle and 5 gallons of gasoline we could have that done in 10 minutes!
Buuunnnyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!
thunk....thunk..thunk.thunk.thunk wapppp!!!
oohhhhhhh yeeeeaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!
Next week at this time the kids will have a few bunnies in the bag!... Maybe... :archer2: ...
Can't wait for you to break trail for us Mikey, I'd do it but I'm gettin' old and slow...... :bigsmyl:

A whole lot of it. Ten or 12 inches. In other words up to Mikeys belt.
great, we'll all have to take turns breaking trail for him.
Nah, hes a hard core, Bronx boy. Ive seen him push snow out of his way as if he were a musk ox.
Does anyone have a beat back quiver or strap on quiver I can borrow for the bunny hunt? I gave all my toys away since I bought my DAS and that has a bolt on quiver. I hit the lotto this year, and I Get to bring hope but I don't have any way to carry my arrows. Wait till you guys see this bow it is a beauty! Thanks Pete
Peter, I have a strap on GN you can borrow.
Thanks Sean I appreciate it.
Hey fellas, I got a text from Cindy today to ask me to pass along a message.....
She wanted to let anyone that is staying at the house that you'll need to bring a pillow,blanket/sleeping bag and and air mattress or something for sleeping.
Also, we need foot warmers, bananas, gatorade, and potassium pills.
She and Shawn are working hard to get the house ready!!!!
Thanks for the update Curt
Ok will do
Curt, I'll bring some exra Gatorade and bananas
Shawn says things are looking good!!
They have plenty of room at the house for folks to crash and they are looking forward to seeing everyone.....and.....there are some great raffle prizes!!!!!!!!
Bringing my "ol man" foam egg-crate mattress and North Face bag, wool blanket, bunny slippers, etc. I don't do floors as well as I used to but never look an indoor sleep during a hunting trip in the mouth.
Got one bottle of potassium pills 100 count five days can't wait
Plowed snow for 5 hours last night one more storm Thursday bunny hunting Saturday Sunday can't wait bbbbbuuuuuuuunnnnnnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyyyyy
I picked up some nifty raffle prizes today. My nephew and I will be there for sure. Im really hoping my boy can go, but with the current situtaion with the ex, it is up in the air.
Can't wait to see you all...and bleed with you. :)
I tried to acclimate myself for the blood loss by walking through rose bushes yesterday.
I hope this trick works however, If you see me to get a little pale or blue in the face, let me know,
This is gonna be too much fun... Much better then "work"! I mean, why do we only get to do this once a year? My own fault, I guess... :( ... Too long a ride for a warm-up/day trip... Feeling my age... :jumper: ... Did I say that on another post? Whatever.......
... mike ... :D ...
Mike, You didn't have to swear. The "W" word is the worst of em all :readit:
Tell the truth,, you can only tolerate the Brethren BO once a year. :nono:
Checked on an order for bunny arrow bits from 3r today to find that it was on hold. Seems the credit card didn't authorize. They ran it again and all was fine. Unfortunately stuff probably wont be here before the weekend. guess I'll have to search through the piles of old stuff to fins appropriate tackle. Got plenty of stuff, just have to find it. Can't wait for this weekend.
Chuck I think you can stop dancing now.
Hope to see you all Saturday morning looks like a long couple of days ahead of us here in Connecticut with snow then it's time to find bunnies got a bunch of great raffle prizes in a big pot of venison sloppy Joe's :knothead:
Getting close now fellas! I started a fight with my cat just to get the blood flowing.
Being the father of a pretty young daughter has some benefits and during a Church outing last weekend in Western NY my daughter Jen met up with some active duty military personnel from Fort Drum. We will be fortunate to host a couple young military guys from the Army's 10th Mountain Division - Light Infantry on the Bunny Hunt. One is from Virginia and the other from Arizona. They have a 4 day leave and are choosing to spend it with us. Let's make it memorable for these young guys that give so much.
Can you say "brush busters"! What better way to prepare for war! Ohhhhhhh yyyyeeeaaaahhhhhhhh!
Any preference on how you would like your alligator dish this year? The "gator ala orange" was a hit last time. The traditional breaded and fried "gator bites" are always good too. Maybe this year we can go with a "sweet and sour gator" or even a "gator stir fry". I have lots of it this year after taking 4 gators in Florida.
Any votes?
I love gator, anyway sounds good. Marinated in some lemon juice and sauteed with peppers onion and pineapple would be awesome. Just an idea.
great job on getting the service guys to come along. Do they need any equipment?
Terry that's awesome!!!! Can't wait to see everyone.....just going to have to clean up from the impending snowstorm before I make my way to Selkirk!
David
That's great Terry, are how are they set up with bows?
That's awesome Terry, you know we'll all work hard to make this memorable for them!!! Let us know if they need equipment.
Shawn says for everyone to please either park on the road or at the airport. A lot of snow and about a foot more tomorrow!!
Look out bunnies!!!!!
We'll have to get some of the tall guys to put the kidies on their shoulders for the kids hunt!!!!
Deja Vu all over again! :smileystooges:
BigEd can carry 10!
Somebody bring a bike flag for Mikey! We don't want to lose him again. :)
If you have an extra "brush" bow bring it along. I'll outfit them with what I have. An extra rabbit arrow could be helpful as well.
I Have My Own Bike Flag! Thank You Terry. :p
Oh yea... Did the cat win the fight, again?
Anyway... This storm is gonna kick my butt... I may get (stuck) at work Thursday thru Friday... Travel on Saturday morning should be clear, I hope... So... All you big and tall fellas are gonna have to carry this little W.A.Y.S.I.A.H. type guy around! Don't worry... I'll give you a doggie treat along the way... :D ...
One More Thing!... I wouldn't miss this weekend for the world!... So keep on ribbin' me... Kinda like it.
... mike ... :archer2: ...
The ribbin only comes from much love brutha!
Anyone around a place that carries brush pants? I need a pair of 40" waist, 32" inseam.....the only place around is an hour away in the wrong direction. If anyone is near a place that carries them and could grab me a pair I will square up at Shawn's.
Thanks,
David
I've got an extra pair David...but you're going to have to go on a crash diet to fit into them :biglaugh:
mmm mmm looking forward to some of that gator..last time it was delicious!
If I had an extra pair they would look like shorts on ya buddy! :D
... mike ...
Man I hope this storm doesn't mess my travel plans up!!!
Man I hope this storm doesn't mess my travel plans up!!!
Have any of you seasoned JLMBH veterans had the need for snowshoes? We have a foot on the ground now and expecting another thursday. Thinking they would be a hinderence in the thick. I have been up to my pockets in snow along the airport fence. Should be a memorable weekend.
I was thinking of grabbing mine, but They're in my storage unit it Poughkeepsie, I'm down near Peekskill right now......I doubt I'll be able to get them before Saturday. looks like I'll be tromping!!
Terry bringing two extra bows and arrows if you need anything else let me know hope you can make it big Ed Snow is on its way to Connecticut hopefully I can get dugout fast and on My Way, Saturday morning just picked up more raffle prizes and three pies for the weekend donated by a local farmer
I just put my snowshoes and a pole in the SUV. We may have another 10" by this time tomorrow and there's 14" on the ground now.
Here's some motivation for you - the only mounted head in the house. This evil looking guy monitors my outside cellar door from the lintel. What troubled mind created this beast in porcelin?

If we let Shawn and Homer do their jobs, roads should be clear by fri night and sat.
Have safe travels everyone!
Mikey, If the snow is too deep, you can ride on my shoulders. Just remember, no promises on how far.
I've got a purple plastic kiddie sled I use to haul dressed out deer in the winter, firewood and other dead weight. Might be perfect for Mike.
Shoot, drag Mike, shoot, drag Mike . . .
Travel should be ok by friday afternoon fellas....
Glen buddy, you're right, snowshoes are useless how we hunt...
Thanks Homer and give my best to Marge! :)
Just got back from the local hardware store running errands before the snow got bad and had a Weber charcoal grill given to me for the raffle hopefully everything works out but we have more snow coming Saturday will keep checking in keeping my fingers crossed
I really need to keep my eye on the weather Saturday. Woodchucker better stop dancing!
Hope you guys have a blast, of course you will that pretty much goes without saying. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make it :(
Shawn asked me to post that don't let the snow stop anyone, everything is ready and we will have a great hunt!!!!!
Just drive slow
All the snow is going to do is push my departure time back a little, just have to make sure the driveway is clear! Can't wait to see you all!!!!
David
aww, heck, If David's going to make it, Ill be there no matter what!!!!!!!!!
Well My Brothers... Unfortunatly, I won't be able to make it this year. My divorce left me up to my A$$ in dept.(as many of you well know) Good news is, I've FINALY got my house out of foreclosure!!! I need every penny I can lay my hands on and have been working like a dog!!!!! 16 hour days & 7 day weeks...
But hey... I'm a Dad, That's my JOB!!!!! Time and 1/2 Sat, Double time Sun, Then Double time and 1/2 Mon for the Holiday... I just can't turn it down.
I did my best, to make sure you boys got a "dusting" of the white stuff, LMAO!!!!!
Have fun!!! Shoot straight!!!! Go Git'm Brothers!!!!!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chuck, If you can catch a ride with Sean or Tony or someone, I will forego buying raffle tickets to pay for 1/2 your fee.
I would hate for you to miss this.
Which brings the next question.... Is anyone headed north or west after the day Saturday to prevent my wife from having to drive down to pick me up? I don't want anyone to out of their way.
Charlie - if you spend Saturday night I'll get you home Sunday. :archer:
Been out plowing, Sean called and wanted me to pass along the message that anyone coming tomorrow to wait until noon or after, and if you have any bag or block targets please bring them for the warm-up.
Hope to see you all at some point over the weekend. The snow is heavy here in CT!
Thanx Matt, I was just going to pass along the same after a call from Shawn.
Everything is a go boys, don't let the deep snow dim your ambition to hunt. We had one of our best hunts ever one year when the snow was as deep or deeper!!
I think we killed 16 or so bunnies that weekend....it was awesome!!!
We also have some really nice raffle prizes this year as well.
Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend :archer2:
I am out again. I will let Shawn know. I had a horse get hurt bad on the farm. It went to a equine center for surgery and it comes back on Saturday. I have to be here.
Just found brush pants!!!!! On my way now, OOOOOOHHHHH YEAHHHHHGHGGH!!!!
David
Just to make it clear, if you guys are coming up today, just wait till afternoon.
Tomorrow morning, it's just like normal...usually anything after 8:00 is fine, but we'll be up earlier.
Shawn said the roads are cleared up and everything looks good and the hunting should be awesome!!!!!

Charlie, I will have your stuff, so I will seek you out as soon as I get there as I will not have a vehicle to leave it in this year.
See ya in a few hours Fellers!! OOOOOOHHHHHHH YYYYEEAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
I should get there around 10. Bet there's going to be a lotta arrows lost in the snow!!!!!
Have fun everybody and please take a lot of pics to post. I'll be thinking of you all while sitting in my cube!
Sorry we missed this one folks.
Hope you had a fun and safe day!
Keep us posted!!
Bill
Just made it home. What a great Day with Great Folks!
Stories to come later.
hard hunting! there wasn't a place where the snow was less than knee deep. bunnies were killed though.
6 bunnies for the day, lot's of great people, raffle prizes, food and money for St. Judes, doesn't get much better than that, thank you to Shawn and his family once again :wavey: :campfire:
Look out bunny killer R in :deadhorse:
Wish I could have made hunt, must have been a blast with the Snow !!! Looking forward to pics & stories.
Some strange tales, almost unbelievable unless you've been there before. Think I may have seen tears in the eyes of some grown men. I know for certain I heard some men screaming as though they were girls.
Any screaming you fellas thought you heard coming from me was a rabbit call and not because of the thorns that left me pant less by days end. :goldtooth:
:campfire:

Last bunny of the day and my girlfriend's first bow kill! About 10 seconds before a barrage of arrows were launched at him I had actually tackled the poor doomed bunny. Larry connected with a leg shot and then Val anchored him with a shot to the spine.
As usual some great memories were made and although it was a brutal hunt due to the amount of snow, it was a blast. A big thanks to Shawn and Cindy for their hospitality, and thanks to all who braved the snow to raise some money for the kids.
BeforeI I start my BSing and lies Id like to give a big thanks Terry for letting us keep the thread going here, means a lot pal.
As always an awesome time with awesome folks who I wish all live just up the road but only get to see once in a while.
This year was tough but some of us connected on bunnies. Some by hand some by arrow and some used their bow without arrows. :goldtooth:
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_1996.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMG_1996.jpg.html) Here we are starting out. Much tougher conditions than the pictures portray. Some drifts along the field edges were hip deep, for real!!!
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_1989.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMG_1989.jpg.html)

Unbelievable drive in these two cats. They hunted from beginning to end and seemed to relish it all.
Just the other side of this bush are three grown men. This was the more open country. The rest was so thick it was more of an act of self destruction to hunt through it. Shawn, David , Kevin , Jamie and Charlie were in the thick with me, sometimes at a few feet away and all i could do was hear them but not see em. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_1994.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMG_1994.jpg.html)
Well... It looks like I "Danced" up a storm!!!!! LMAO
Looks like you folks had a GREAT TIME!!!!! Wish we could have been there.....
Hope strikes one Rabit one Arrow congratulations to all those who got rabbets sorry couldn't be there for the whole weekend but had a blast today :clapper:
First bunny down was by killed by Shawn as he and I were driving to the kids and other watchers on the school house push. About a 15 yard sitting bunny that thought he had a good hiding place among the roses.
Within minutes of that I found a good looking rose bush turned igloo by the snow with a lot of wabbit tracks leading to and from it. A few jumps on it and a big ol buck rabbit came charging out but ducked back in when he saw me. I was persistent and finally busted him out. As he was running at about 15 yards out back and left of me I swung on him and shot him with an ash arrow. Bunny number 3 for me with that arrow but it is now lost to the roses.
Here is my bunny with my official game bearers. Gotta love it when your not wearing a game vest. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_1992.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMG_1992.jpg.html) (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_1999.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMG_1999.jpg.html)
Great times. My hips were in agony by mid-day but I wasn't going to let youngsters and girls both outshoot AND out pace me!

Shawn would place us in tangles so thick the rabbits avoided them and yell "Spread out you pansys" . . . or other less floral things.
That's man's a human flail mower.
Great picture Izzy wish I could've been there for you guys on Saturday good to see the boys are both adit with you
With all the kids hunting I was happy to hear all the high-pitched screaming and shreaking . . . until I realized that was Izzy. He says it was the rabbit - but that bunny had passed on earlier. ;)
Here's Charlie Janssen on watch - and I think we might have found one of your arrows this morning.

If you look close at this picture you can see torn flesh and yet smiles.
Obviously shock from fatigue and blood loss. There were some calories burned and severe brush busted.
A first for me - I had stomped my way into a big honeysuckle bush (which takes some effort even without two feet of snow) and Mike said "he's right under your feet! All I saw was snow, but I un-nocked my arrow and holding it I poked the only spot a bunny could be - and the bunny took off (to be rolled four feet later). I took coup on a bunny! Or maybe "catch-and-release"?
We were having to drag the bunnies out of their snow tunnels. They'd hold until you stepped on them.
My bunk mate. A little young and obviously traumatized by my heavy petting actions during the night. Sorry Shawn - suggest you get Maybe in for some counseling right away.
Good food. Great company. 17 feet of snow up hill in every direction and worth every minute. Thanks Shawn!!!

And it was great to meet another group of new friends from TradGang and re-connect with some of the crew I knew.
I just got home......Tom it was the toughest hunt at Shawn's I have ever been on......deep, hard snow with bunnies burrowed deep and holding tight.....I'll get a couple of pics and stories up later.
David
And a special thanks to Cindy for letting a mob of messy bowhunters invade her home. The coffee and ibuprofen was MUCH appreciated.

OK. I'll grant that maybe it was your bunny that did the screaming.
I had been pushing so hard by then I was in my "happy place" and may have been confused in my delirium.
Believe it or not I even hallucinated men flying and catching bunnies by hand and later Sweet and Sour Alligator for supper, so obviously I was unreliable by then.
As usual Shawn, Cindy, and his two daughters went above and beyond in hosting the JLMBH. Thank you Leonard Family!
It was a great day with lots of fun, food, and friends.
I'll just share a couple pictures and thoughts.
(http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m84/TJReceveur/JenandArmyGuys.jpg) (http://s102.photobucket.com/user/TJReceveur/media/JenandArmyGuys.jpg.html)
This is my daughter Jen, flanked by two active duty military Infantry from Fort Drum. They chose to spend a coveted 4 day leave and travel down to bunny hunt with us. All of my traditional brothers made me proud and them welcome. They had a fantastic time and McKay, who is a newly converted hunter said he could like doing this. Jared is (was) a compound hunter and he left with a much better appreciation for traditional archery.
As has been duly noted above, the snow was a bit deep. Here's a photo of two troopers. My daughter Jen in front showing the snow depth and Jamie's son Jase fighting through the snow like he did all day on Saturday. Never a complaint from either. Jase is a hunting and fishing fool. That kid does not even have an inkling of what the word "quit" means.
(http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m84/TJReceveur/JenandJaseinDeepSnow.jpg) (http://s102.photobucket.com/user/TJReceveur/media/JenandJaseinDeepSnow.jpg.html)
(http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m84/TJReceveur/2014JenRabbit.jpg) (http://s102.photobucket.com/user/TJReceveur/media/2014JenRabbit.jpg.html)
This is Jen with a tag teamed rabbit the she and Greg K managed to coral. Jen slowed it down with an arrow shot to the rear end and Greg finished it off with a well placed blow with his bow. So, it really was killed with a "bow" and "arrow".
This is the Duck Dynasty rabbit killer himself.
(http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m84/TJReceveur/GregBunnies.jpg) (http://s102.photobucket.com/user/TJReceveur/media/GregBunnies.jpg.html)
(http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m84/TJReceveur/LineofHunters.jpg) (http://s102.photobucket.com/user/TJReceveur/media/LineofHunters.jpg.html)
I did not raise any dumb kids. That's Jen in the back of the snow line. It is MUCH easier walking at the end of the line with a packed trail instead of being in front breaking trail. That figure way out front is Jared, the military guy. He had boundless energy and enthusiasm.
Great pics Terryy, sorry we missed you Jen and the soldiers. Matt and I didn't make it until 2 am. I also want to say that one of the soldiers used Hope. So that was pretty cool. I a sure he enjoyed her.
Pete
Now that I have a chance to relay my thoughts,
I cannot thank Cindy and Shawn enough, this hunt was much needed medicine for the soul. You guys are incredible hosts and I am blessed to have been invited again this year.
I did not take any pictures because I am lazy. In counter for that I asked to push every hunt, I feel as if I let you all down because I only lost about a pint of blood. I still had most color and was still standing at the end of the hunt so I hadn't lost enough.
It's ok Charlie. Tim (I think that was his name. I suck with names) lost enough for all of us. That guy must be part beagle. Hardcore.
I was fortunate enough to witness the first 4 rabbits to be killed. This year was different in the fact that the drivers had more opportunities than the posters.
The rabbits sat tight in their tunnels and when flushed, couldn't move fast through the snow. Usually they would quickly dive into other tunnels.
I was able to flush 8 rabbits this year. That is down from my usual 18-20.
The first one to be killed was by Shawn, as noted earlier he made a well placed shot and I had the honors of carrying it back to the house.
Then Came Izzy's rabbit. Here is a guy who tells us to get ready, he is going to flush a bunny to us.
So Shawn, Charlie and I get ready. Izzy jumps on the brush pile and sends the rabbit the other way. Without hesitation, Izzy does some balancing Matrix move and centers the rabbit with an arrow as its bounding away.
I think he had it all planned just to show off. I mean why else would he kick the rabbit out the wrong side of the bush :dunno:
Later on, after lunch we hit the airport hedge row.
A rabbit was exiting the drivers to the back. A quick, 15 yard shot resulted in me losing an arrow, It was close enough to turn the rabbit back to a brush pike for Charlie to poke with his arrow. That rabbit was eventually sent to pot with a well placed arrow. My not so well place arrow became misplaced. :banghead:
Further up teh fence row, another rabbit came running toward me, Both Greg and Sean had touched this rabbit with their arrows. I promptly missed a 2 yard shot. The brush had lifted my arrow off the rest and I shot over as I swung the bow down.
With one well placed jump, I was able to catch the rabbit and Greg took a quick hand off to the dispatch it quickly. It had a broken leg and I am happy it wasn't left to suffer its fate with the cold and coyotes.
After the Island of trees, I was able to keep all my arrows in my quiver, Its seems in years past I always dropped a few in there.
During the Rabbit Valley Drive, I fell into a sink hole that was 5 feet deep and completely covered by snow. The snow was 3 feet deep and I was literally standing in a hole looking up at the light.
That incident scared me pretty good :scared: , Imagine taking a step and having no ground below you. Luckily for me, the bottom was flat and I wasn't hurt. David took a pic of the hole after I was able to climb out, hopefully he will post the pic.
Shawn, if you see, this, its in the clearing and you should mark that hole, It could be dangerous.
Charlie, one minute you were there , and then you were gone!
Thanks to Shawn and Cindy for opening up your home to an army of wet hunters. Thanks for the help of your family also.
The young hunters on this hunt were just awesome. They plowed through snow all day long and finished strong. The snow was up to my knees all day long. That was waist level for some. Great kids.
My son won a very nice pair of binoculars in the raffle donated by Shawn. This year I was of the fortunate fathers to hunt with their kids

A super day with some great people.
I like to thank all for the stories of the hunt. Being a old fart of 73 and with COPD I sure no longer can hunt in the cold. But after hearing your tales of the hunt sure wish I could have been there with you.
My best to all and my thanks.
I was also shooting 3D in the warmer weather of Myrtle beach SC at sand dune archers, we had about 75 attend the shoot of 30 3D targets, weather was in the mid 50's and sunny with no wind. The 3D did not move, non did we find any snow holes, but the fellowship of the bow was there.
As always, we all had a blast! Hugs and kisses to Shawn and family... Maybe someone can post a picture of the Attacking Tree Rat that tried to bite my head off! ... :scared: ... Greg saved my life when he body slammed the fellow... ... It's True!
... mike ... :D ...
Very glad that Pete and I made the trip Saturday night I think the best moment on Sunday was hearing everyone scream and we found out that Mikey shot a squirrel I believe that's the first one ever during the rabbit hunt
Thanks to Shawn, Cindy and everyone else who helped make this happen again.
It was a blast, as always. On the first push, we had 2 waves of pushers. I was in the second wave and about half way through a rabbit double backed through the ranks. It was headed right for Jan and myself. We both shot, I missed, we are pretty sure she clipped it. As it sped by, I tomahawked it with my bow. That slowed him down enough that I could run and dive onto him.
If you look close you can see my limb tip covered in bunny hair!

Shortly later, Guru and I were in the middle of the thicket and had a bunny come right back at us. It need up behind us and just loping along in the deep snow, I took about a 20 yard shot and thought I was low, but the bunny slowed as more shots were taken and finally charlie grabbed it. I went back to find my arrow and there was blood at the shot and hair on my arrow. I had broken his upper front leg. 4 years of bunny hunting and this was the first good shot I have ever put on one.
2 Bunnies and a little blood loss later

My favorite part of the day was hunting with my little buddy Jace. I have done a lot of fishing with him and his father, Ishiwannabe. He is almost alway more hardcore than ether of us. Saturday was my first experience hunting with him. It was a tough day by anyones standards, but this kid would not quit. This is us on stand during the "island of trees" push. We covered 3 miles or more of snow this deep. He powered through.

That night the food and raffle were great. Just sitting down in a warm place, in dry clothes was amazing too.
My buddy and I went back to the hotel that night and realized we had 2 rabbits to clean! Lots of newspaper and plastic bags, turned the bathroom into a perfect place. LOL

More on day 2 and Mikey's narrow escape from and attacking squirrel later!
Your friend is one hard working hunter Greg. He was all shredded up!. I bet the hotel owner doesn't want to see that photo
Awesome pic of your son and you together Glen. Thats what its all about. I had a good time sitting with you fellas and Noah is planning on them meeting some ladies in Manhattan.
What was your friends name again Greg? He is a good dude and for sure a hard charger.
Let's see....where do I start..... I left my house on Friday morning and three and half hours later I was turning off of Rte 9 onto Creble Road. As I passed Brokeback Mtn and the Greenhouses a smile came across my face at the memories they brought back. I pulled into Shawn's at 2:30ish, man I have missed this. Shortly thereafter Curt and Cade showed up, it was so good to see these three friends, it had been way too long. We spent the rest of the afternoon/evening catching up and telling stories before hitting the sack.
People began showing up early then next morning and it wasn't long before Shawn had the kids hunt organized and on it's way. I'd say about noontime we started the main hunt, walking away from the house it looked something like this.......
Little did we know what we were in for......like a fool I took the lead as we started the hedgerow push.....the snow was over knee deep and a heavy solid snow. To say it was difficult walking is an understatement, throw in trying to pound brush and the difficulty increased. We did manage to kill a couple of rabbits on that push, one happened right in front of me when a rabbit came loping by, got shot at and hit by Jen, and then got jumped on with a full body slam by Greg!!! Dead rabbit! Did I forget to mention thatJen was now out of arrows? See, the problem with two+ feet of snow is that after you shoot your pretty much can count that arrow lost. I think Jen had shot 5 or 6 times and lost all of her arrows by then. Good thing Terry, her dad, had brought a few dozen with him for this hunt. Here we are taking a rest before staring the push in the Island of Trees......I have another name for it now that I can't print here..

Time for dinner, I'll be back.
David
first let me say a big thank you to shawn and cindy for opening up there house and making me feel at home, all of us who attend see the end result of what amounts to weeks of work so we can have a great time. Two more unshelfish people would be ward to find. Im allways amazed how badley shawn can beat up his body and getup and do it again the next day. this year especially with all the snow it was hard going, and then to have a hardcore six year old putting us all to shame, no one was about to go in early. the frist day for me was slow, but we did manage to get six rabbits.the second day had less hunters but i think we figured out find a hole under some brush with rabbit tracks and you mite find a rabbit, well maybe in mikeys caes a squirell. i was hunting alone side my friends nephew peter when we found on souch hole. i told him to get ready and i would jump on the pile to see if i could scare out a rabbit. but peter would not hear of it, he would be the one to jump on the pile. after arguing with him that he should be the one to shoot, it is about the kids, i gave in. He got to jump and i would shoot. Sure enough after three or four jumps out comes a bunnie running to my left, in one motion i swing on the target and let fly, the arrow took the rabbit low in front of the back leg and half way out behind the front leg. i sure was happy with litte petes jumping.
:campfire: Great stuff!!!! Sounds like a fantastic time.
The Island of Trees is a push that is about 100 yards long in an area that is so thick that you are forever getting stuck if you do your job, ie, jump on and in piles to move rabbits. This year it was especially brutal......here is where I had just been.....
And here is where I was going......ugh...
We made our way through the Island of Trees without much luck, the bunnies were not moving unless you stepped directly on them.
We moved from area to area until we hit Rabbit Valley......you guessed it, it usually has a high number of bunnies. We pushed through the snow, brush and briars without moving a thing, never has that happened here. At one point I came out of a brush pile into an open area to find Charlie just standing there. He called me over and pointed to this......
He had been walking in deep snow and suddenly found himself in this hole, over his head in a sinkhole! That is my bow in the hole to give you an idea how deep it was, luckily he was not hurt. We finished our push and got ready for the walk home.....let me tell you, after a day like this getting to pavement and solid, even ground was a Godsend.
David
PTSD. thanks David for bringing that back :readit:
These recaps are helping me get through the week.
Does anyone know who had the green Kanati ?
That was me.
Nice one Scott, I sure would like to find a green one around 55-60# or so

Charlie, thats not fair to expose me, I mean accuse me of being the voice behind the screaming. You saw my pants, maybe more or less than you cared to. Them was hooked and wicked thorns what did that to me. If it was me screaming, which it wasn't, I had, I mean I would have had a damn good excuse for it. But it wasn't me!!! At least it wasn't only me. Mine were the baritone screams if I did any screaming at all. :readit:
Here I thought you changed into a guilie suit at lunchtime. You mean those tattered rags you ended up in were your upland duds?
Yeah, I saw a lot of pants and quivers. You'll notice most of my images were from the tail end of the line. I was whupped bad by the late half of the first day. I think I'll need to have my hips re-bushed. Definately in the market for lighter weight boots. Phew!
I don't know where Charlie J. got the energy to go digging them out like a terrier after a badger on that last drive Saturday.
So at the end of Rabbit Valley is a small rise covered in thick brush that parallels the road, followed by a gully filled with brush. Both are on the way back to the house. We pushed the rise with no luck and I climbed out of that hellhole to the road. At the gully a couple of guys climbed down and worked there way through that....BUNNY!!! I think they pushed three rabbits out of that gully, two escaped, but the third......well, that one got slowed down by an arrow out Glenbo's selfbow and then stopped dead in it's tracks when Val centerpunched it. 6 dead rabbits on the first day, pretty good considering the conditions.
Then it was back to Shawn's for dinner and the raffle.
I have no pictures of the raffle, suffice it to say that there were some nice bows, knives, shafts and other archery related items were raffled off. I will say that there was a knife that Shawn won that was the sharpest knife I have ever seen. I was stunned by how sharp it was.....it was a Helle blade with a wood handle.....rumor has it that Larry is the one that worked on that blade......wow!

Now, Mikey assured me it looked like this and was four feet tall. "Up to my eyes" I think he said.

It's all in the sharpening technique David.....
I've been with out a computer for a few days, as a matter of fact, I'm on my fiancé's iPad!! This is the 4th year in a row that I've hunted bunnies up at Shawn's. I have to say that I've been look foward to a rabbit hunt every year! I just hope he keeps inviting me!!
Anyway, it was great to see some of the friends that I've made on tradgang over the last few years. The snow was deep....the brush was thick and thorny......the fun was unmeasurable!!! I had 3 shots on 2 bunnies, touched one. It's definitely tough to pick a spot on a running bunny!
It was great to see Shawn & family. Many thanks to all your hard work.
Sorry I missed the hunt.. Glad you had a good time..A lot of good memories made..
Mikey I heard everything that went on I need to hear from you tell us the story about the squirrel
Thanks again Shawn Cindy your girls and the guys who head up early and set up. We really appreciate it. I also appreciate all you guys who help the young hunters. Especially this year, I couldn't come until Sunday, but Kevin was good enough to bring my nephew peter up Saturday and everyone looked out for him. Very cool.
I lucked out and got to bring hope to the bunny hunt this year. I sent her up Saturday and one of Jens solider buddies got to use her. Unfortunately they didn't come back Sunday so I don't know about her success. We did draw blood on Sunday though. Of the 3 bunnies I saw Sunday I only had one shot. As I approached a deadfall with tracks all around I noticed a patch of grey under the log, next to the stump. Is that a bunny? I was pretty sure it was and shot into the grey. My arrow lurched forward and started quivering. Oh yeah that was a bunny and the second of the day!
So there we was... Bustin' brush to kick out a bunny when David saw a tree rat way up in a tree top... Was not safe to shoot an arrow up there, so David called the squirrel a dirty name and it looked right at me popping its teeth!
Next thing ya know it was on the ground making a bee line for me! :scared: I had to shoot or have my head bit off... ... Lemmie tell ya they are tough critters even with an arrow in 'em... Glad Greg saved me from them big buck teeth or should I say fangs... :dunno:
Things were then under control when David pulled his badge and made the little rat surrender, cuffed him, and brought him to bag... Had to change my under ware on that one!... :p
True Story....... :D
Tell the truth Mikey, you had to change your under wear cause it was dragging in the snow :readit: ;)
I had an amazing time. I'll need more time to process my thoughts and get the pictures uploaded.
It was great hunting with such a tremendous group...
Thanks again for the ride Sean !!!
AnytIme Steve!! Thanks for the company, it was a tough ride home. My back and legs were screaming!!

Having a little issue with my pix, but will get them up.

Thats a cool little "hat" cam!!! Looking forward to seeing day 2. Good job Guru!!
nice vid Curt, I meant to ask you about that camera on your head and never did
Cool video Curt, thanks for posting that. It looks like everyone had a great time!
-Jay
Looks like everyone had a great time! I am looking forward to the second day. :bigsmyl:
Dang Curt, your getting the hang of that videography. Real nice.
Great video bud. Each one better than the last. Can't wait for some bowfishing and turkey action on film!
Nice footage Curt. What camera is that?
Great video Curt! That was worth the wait and the last scene was definitely. The best!
Thanx fellas!!! :knothead:
Cameras used on the weekend were the Sony Action Cam, and my Sony WX-300.
Any clips with sound and regular speed were filmed with the WX-300. It's a tiny point and shoot camera that takes exceptional video in a very small package.
How I missed that rabbit at 10 feet is beyond me!! :dunno:

I loved that video Curt! Im so glad you got David and Jace...seeing his face(I couldnt during the actual giving of the bow)was priceless! He was so very blown away.
Such an amazing day all the way around. I'm sure it is a day Jace will neveer forget. I know I wont.
I'm still working on the pics and what to say. In the meantime, keep the stories coming everyone!!
Great Video Curt. Don't worry about missing the bunny, It gave me something to catch moments after you cut the film. :goldtooth:

We should get a pheasant hunt together the end of March!!?
Shawn said he had a place he knew of that would work.
I do too, but Shawn said his place would be a lot cheaper and good birds.
Whatta ya think bud???
Sounds good to me send me a PM or text me let me know what you guys want to do and what weekend I think I'll talk to Pete to sounds like fun let me have some details
That would be great,I would be up for that.Keep us posted.
Does anyone know who donated the 68#@28" longbow, build date 7/1/93 and is named "2nd born" for Jerry Andrews, no makers name just a makers mark and I would love to find out the maker, thanks, Steve
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/photo1.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/photo1.jpg.html) Heres a couple bunny killers from way back. Little Peter in the middle (an awesome kid) and the "Connecticut Cowboys", Pete left and Kevin on the right. :jumper:
thanks for posting the pic izzy, sorry you and the boys could'nt make it back for sunday. one hunt that anyone that has gone to always wants to go back to. cant wait for the next time.
Sorry I couldn't make it folks, but emergent issues at work aligned to ruin perfectly good plans to trudge through snow with my buds and fling arrows at bunnies. I would have been less bummed if those issues came up during the peak of the rut!
I'm glad to see such a great turnout and especially great to see a bit of the bunny population reduced!
Can't wait to hear more about Mikie and that "weretreerat"!
Nice picture
Saw a rabbit hit on the road today makes me think of the weekend again
Me too Homer. I have been seeing quite a bit now that is warming up and the snow isn't as deep. I saw one cowering from horseback yesterday afternoon.
In the morning I was looking for sheds and found the spot of a rabbit feast from another fortunate hunter. I saw a bunny sunning himself next to a wood pile.
Both sightings brought back sweet memories of Shawn's!
Flash Backs Of The Best Kind! Gotta Love It!
... mike ...
I went to grab an arrow out of a thicket and got a face full of thorns . Reminded me of Shawn's
