We all know about deer and elk and pigs. Even sheep and goats (Mt and Prairie). What other kinda stuff is there to hunt, including / especially smaller game. How about wierd, unknown or underhunted stuff ? I am especially interested in south and east, but hey. . any direction is fine.

Javelina, great little targets, aren't as bad eating as branded.
You probably need to go south and east from your location.
Certainly not unknown nor are they weird, but it seems like rabbits and squirrels are way under-hunted around here in MI. When I was a kid growing up (still trying to do that) that's what kids cut their hunting teeth on. Now I read about 10 year olds going to Africa and coming back with 4 or 5 EXPENSIVE trophies.
Coyotes.
Beaver is open to hunting year round here in OK. I hear they're not bad to eat, either....
do you hunt http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/08/Myocastor_coypus_walking.JPG/220px-Myocastor_coypus_walking.JPG
i don't know the name in american ..
in france it's open all year around because it's classified as a pest and taste pretty good .
it's good hunting school for newbie and good practising for older hunter ..
Up north in Australia, camels and Banteng (wild cattle). Smaller stuff, Dingoes, wild dogs, Cane toads.
Jean-Vincent that is a muskrat.
I have also heard they eat pretty good.
I talked with a friend that traps just yesterday and he told me the pelts were bringing $8-10.
I was shocked because it's ways off from the $0.75 to $1.00 I got as a kid.
God bless,Mudd
Turkey, anyone?
Chacalaca, never seen one, but it's a bird and they were listed in the hunting regulations in Texas when I was growing up. Not sure if I got the spelling correct but I always wanted to hunt them when I was a kid. Then there are the nutria in the south and don't forget snipe!
Just googled it, it's spelled chachalaca.

Not to get to far off topic but is that green pricing or skinned and dried?
Back to the OP, bowfishing is a joy. Plenty of carp to go around.
Maryland Eastern shore Sika deer.
Snipe and quail would be challenging but fun.

Peoria Ill has Aerial carp bow fishing. The Wabash River around here is full of them.
Nutria?
Gophers are fun to shoot. They're a pest, so if you shoot them you're usually doing someone a favor. And often you find colonies of them, so you can get a lot of shooting. I sure wouldn't eat them though.
In the south/east Deer, bears, pigs, turkeys, alligators, squirrels, rabbits. There are Sika Deer in Maryland, I can't to go after them next year!

thanks , then it's the nutria , i was about .
crow, coon, coyote, frogs, woodchuck (hear it tastes good), neighbor's cat when it "goes" in your kids' sand pit (JK),
Zradix brings up a point. . . all these critters. . do they taste good ? Any experience ?

I hear they have snakes down south and how about the Eastern Diamond backs. Dangerous game? or are they protected?

Nutria are a large aquatic rodent. Larger than a muskrat smaller than a beaver has a bald tald like a rat. They taste ok. But beaver blackstrap is one of the best tasting meats I have tried. And being vegetarians they are pretty clean. Same with the nutria.
When you compare our deer to your's I would call them small game...lol
Pretty much overgrown greyhounds
Crows are good to hunt. They are very wary and hard to get a shot on.
Haven't done it much, but strapping a light on your bow and hunting coons and foxes at night is fun.
I love shooting squirrels with a bow...there are many counties in Texas that allow year round squirrel hunting.
you could also go for the wild hogs and exotics like black buck, adad (spelling?), axis deer, fallow deer, etc in texas...i think they are open for a good while...its been a while since ive looked into them..also quail and grouse and chipmunk all make good sport and challenging shots. as far as tastes i only know of the grouse and quail as being good eating. wouldnt eat the chipmunks, thats more of population control. and ive never hunting wild hogs or the exotics of texas just heard/read about them.
Bunnies, squirrels, upland birds, raccoons, fox and coyote. Lots and lots of stuff! Shawn
