Looks like I am going back again this year!! Just waiting on the word from Nomad88 my son-in-law. I passed some nice bucks last year and saw several over 140"s and one that was close to 170"s. Had him following a doe and he came with 80 yards before he chased a smaller buck off. Should be there the 2nd. week in Nov. for 9 days!! Shawn
I will be out there the last of November beginning of December. Dreaming of whitetail already.
Drool drool, you guys should have a blast. Wish you good hunting.
Shawn, you will be there during a great period. Best of luck!
PS, chase off all the little bucks before grand Daddy gets there! :readit: :p
Awesome bud, good luck and keep us posted!!
Good for you Shawn. Nothing better than hunting with family. Hope all is well with you and Cindy and your family. Hope you have a great hunt. Glen
I wanna see pics ...BEST OF LUCK TO YOU GUYS
Good luck !!!
That's a good time to be in the buckeye state. Good luck!
Good Luck, Shawn!
Bisch
Good for , I am sure you'll have great time out there again. I had a ball there last year.
David
Born in Ohio, grew up out west. Ten to thirty years ago all my uncles, cousins, etc wanted to come out here to hunt. Now I'd like to try my native home for a hunt....funny how things change.
I'll be in Ohio for the whole season
A few years ago I hunted with a friend on the outskirts of Cincinnati and seen more bucks in 3 days than I have seen in 10 years here. Lot's of cornfields around.
And ohio deer population is in bad shape compared to 5 years ago. Still has some big deer just not near as many. I hope the DNR pulls their heads out of their a$$ and stops the doe slaughtering nothing wrong with giving a doe tag out but every year we see way less deer than the year before, and the blue tongue has taken its toll also the last 2 years. We don't even shoot our does but everyone around us our killing everything they see. Good luck to everyone.
You did pick the best rut time in your choice. My best time is the first week of the season because they are more in their core areas.I wish they would open the season two weeks earlier and close the season a month earlier to many deer getting killed with racks already dropped.
X2 for what longbowben said, have a farm in the golden triangle of Ohio, Just outside of Zanesville and numbers are wayyyyy down! Granted I did have more opportunities at big bucks last year but that was in the first two weeks of October! Good luck ! Ohio just isn't the state that the magazines make it out to be!
I'm with longbowben as well.... Last few years have been nothing great. My next biggest gripe is leased land... I live in licking county which is a "top" county... But I have over the last few years lost multiple pieces of private property due to a leasing. I don't fault the landowners as its their land to do what they want.... But around my neck of the woods you either have to own land or have LOTS of money to hunt. Just venting... I'm a younger man and my career is not a big money maker, so I'm hoping to save up and hopefully afford a few acres for my family. Sorry for venting on your post Shawn..... Ohio is a great place to hunt and you are coming obviously at a great time! I just hope our numbers start getting back to normal and this doesn't turn into a rich mans "sport" like Europe is. Keep us posted on your trip and best of luck to you!

I'll second that. The doe population needed to be reduced, but it is getting pretty bad in a lot of Ohio. Not sure what the DNR is thinking, plus adding the early muzzleloader season really stuck it to the bowhunters.
I only hunted my lease last year and I did notice low deer numbers. Only saw a few adult does in 9 days during the rut. The county I was in has a low deer take and I should of researched it much better. I agree one doe tag is not so bad but 3-5 over the counter is an awful lot. This county has better deer take numbers and I hope we do well. Shawn
What county are you hunting in? We hunt harrison co.
This year Scioto county, last year union! Shawn
Have hunted scioto before never hunted union. If you can hunt behind the prison there are some monster deer their.
Hope you fellas get on em good this year.
Good luck out there. I've hunted Ohio for the last five seasons mostly in Pike, Ross, and Highland counties. Deer numbers are down since I've starting going but I feel you still have a whole lot better chance at a really good buck there than you do in NY. I've never hunted Scioto County but I've been there several times, my aunt and uncle used to live in McDermott.
Sounds like you will have a good time! Hopefully you get to put an arrow in one of those bucks this year!
Looks like we will be heading to Ross county just south of Chillicothe along the Scioto river November 3rd through the 12th. Should be a great time if the feral dogs don't run the deer off again this year. It was rough last year. Two years ago I saw 14 bucks in 7 days of hunting 5 of them would've looked great on my wall. This might be the year
Just got back last night. I have 3 stand locations set, entrance trail cut, one ladder stand location, one ground blind, and many climber stand locations. Deer sign still looks great. C'mon November!
Ok Ross county, sounds good, I will be there and we will have several more stand sites real quick!! Can't wait bought my license last night!!
I got some pics on the way
Good luck! Every year you see some nice bucks from Ohio.

The house where we will stay. It's for sale so hopefully it doesn't sell before our hunt. You can see how steep the terrain is.

A good clear path to the stands is important for a clean scent free entrance.

I'm on my way there now...... Sadly for work. But good luck! Happy hunting!

I use a bracket tree stand system that Shawn introduced me to from Cabela's. They no longer make them. This bracket has been there since last year and needed to be adjusted it's sticking straight out.

One of many runs within bow range of the tree stand.

Fog and wet conditions prevented me from taking a lot more pictures. I will take many pics in November God willing.
Sounds like a destination of antler filled dreams.
Wishing you a memorable hunt....
Thanks ya'll. Here is the blind I constructed from scraps and salvaged materials.

Man you are the man!! I cannot wait as I said I have several brackets for my Chippewa's and a few sets of climbing sticks as well, plus my pop up ground blind. We will be good to go!! For you guys that don't know Nomad is my son-in-law and we have killed a quite a few deer hunting together!! Shawn
ALERT!
ODNR has stated that there are no deer left in Ohio.
All deer sightings are the flesh eating zombie deer that are the results of chow tongue and hemoragic plague.
These deer are extremely dangerous and should only be shot in the brain at 100 yds.
Also 200 pound mosquitos have bee spotted
Be warned :bigsmyl:
All kidding aside, welcome vistors.
One word of advise is pre-season scouting.
I meet hunters every year that come to Ohio in hopes of shooting a "Mr freak nasty"
Truth is most Mr Freak nasties are on private land. Hunting adjacent to these areas are best the weeks of rut and pre rut when they wander from the home locale.
Over the years farming has decline alot in Ohio. And that has hurt food sources.
Dont get me wrong, there are bruins in public woods. It takes a while to find them and you may be surprised to see many guys in that part of the woods.
I remember driving to cooper hollow one year and it looked like a drive-in.
If anyone is coming to SE Ohio and hunting in Jackson County , reach out to me if you need help dragging a deer.
I will be off the either the week of Halloween or the following week.
:archer:
One bit of advice .... make sure you spend time in your stand mid day. Some nice ones will be cruising during most hunters lunch breaks. Good luck guys!
We have private land and Damon has seen some monsters hete!! We will spend a few of The days On stand all day. I myself may not even start HUNTING til 10 aday or Two and sit all day. Gonna be good!! Shawn
Looks like I will be hunting in Ohio from Sept 28th to February 2nd.
Another whole archery season spent hunting in ohio ..
And it is awesome! Every year!
This year will be my first with a longbow and a recurve though.
I'm very much looking forward to it!
I know the 10 days I spent there the last two years are awesome. Can't imagine a whole season. Ohio hunters don't be afraid to post your takes on this thread. Ticks seem to be non existent this year compared to the last two years and there is a lot of nuts and fruit on trees. It should make for some good antler growth.
Just put it in my GPS 10hrs. 32 minutes for me!! I will take my time and do it in 9.5 hrs!! :bigsmyl: I have been doing some research and I see there was a 240"er killed a couple miles from our spot in 2009 and there are always several booners killed in this county each year. I am sure we will have a great time and hopefully one of us kills a good'un!!! Shawn
I hope you stick the biggest deer of your life Shawn. The best of luck too you...
Good luck this fall shawn, its a good state to hunt for sure!
Oh yes, Ohio has beckoned many from neighboring states looking to escape short archery seasons and terrible herd management. I've been a land owner since 2007, bought a new place this past spring. No shortage of farming in my area in Ashtabula County. A three month trail camera survey shows high deer density and shockingly, nearly a 1:1 buck to doe ratio. Can't wait for the season to open.

Brian, I bid pretty high on your generous St. JUdes offering but alas got my a$$ handed to me in the bidding cause I was tag teamed!! Great property you have there and you do a wonderful job with it!! Best of luck bud!! Thanks guys, I am having fun researching this Ross County. I was in Union last year and had 880 acres leased but man was it flat and very little cover. I mean I only had about 40 acres of woods and hedgerows on the property and another 30of CRP and that was it. It was tough to hunt because the deer new you were entering the property from over a mile away. I tried everything and even slept in the woods one night to not disturb anything on my way in, it worked and I saw some nice deer that morning, but I was holding out for a bomber. This year from the looks of the new property it will be much easier to hunt and I will not be quite so picky. I figure 120"s and above the first 5 days and than any 2.5year old after that. I want to thank Damon for inviting me and I am hoping we can make this a yearly thing. I miss him and my daughter more than they know!! Love you guys!! Shawn
Shawn, not sure which way you are coming through Ohio but Mike Gerardi is not far from my farm in NE Ohio. Maybe the three of us can plan a hunt and dinner or at least a beer.
-Brian
I will be coming right thru Ashtabula on my way. I would love to meet ya and I could do an afternoon hunt or an afternoon drink(I don't drink beer) as I should be close to where you are by 1pm. on Nov. 1st or 2nd. depending if I leave friday or sat. morning!! PM me and we will try and meet up!! I am dying to hunt as much of Ohio as possible and am looking for another lease as well! Shawn
Just give me a date and time. Love too meet you guys. Dinner is always on my too do list...
Mike, will do as it gets closer. Like I said I am leaving 4am. either Nov. 1st or the 2nd. so depending on Brian it will be one of those days. We will definitely have to do this!! Shawn
There's a beautiful farm at the end of the road where we will hunt. I bet you could talk them into a one or two week lease. There is also 1000 acre hunt club or family owned club that borders our permitted property that might let you lease too. :saywhat:
If this place works out, hopefully we don't have to lease. We will have to talk to the farm down the road, maybe we can hunt it for free!! :bigsmyl: Shawn
Can't wait to head out to Ohio this year for a week. Not looking forward to the long drive on 90 from VT though. Hope to visit my land, but will be spending most of my time in Cambridge. Hope to haul my recently purchased camper to land by next year and eliminate cabin fees. Lot of hopes :)
I'll keep you guys posted. Greyfox and Tracker1 have not finalized their St. Jude hunt dates yet and I want to give them priority. If they are not here either of those days, we'll get something together.
-Brian
I live here in SE Ohio in Athens. Deer population is NOT diminished-anything but. I live in the City and I have to wait for deer to get out of my driveway so I can drive out to the woods to hunt.
We hunt on my friends private land that is right up to the city limits and take 5-6 deer a year off his few acres and have more deer back every season.
Kill em and grill em...
Shawn,
I'm back in Ohio now. If it would work out I would love to see you again.
Bill

X2 yhats proven in my harvests
Sounding great!!! Shawn
Did some more research and there is some good public land not too far from where we are. I hope we do good! Shawn
Thought I would bring this back up.
Leaving early Sunday morning for the 9 hr. road trip in hopes for a Sunday afternoon hunt :goldtooth:
Born & grew up in Ohio; still have relatives in few parts of the state. We have a May get together in Jewett over Memorial Day weekend; I see deer around every time I leave there in the evening. Makes me wish my grandfathers farm was still in the family.
GOOD LUCK, Shawn!!!!!
Tell Damon, I said Hello!!!!!
Hello woodchucker hope to see ya in Feb at the Bunny Hunt :wavey:
I went to my friends place near Peebles, ohio Oct 12th-22nd..we are going back in Nov. There were very few acorns(pretty much none) and lots of standing corn and beans. Deer were not moving much but I did pass on a very nice but young 135 class buck and several big does.. the rut should be going pretty strong in early mid November so I think you will have a good trip. Good luck, have a safe trip.
I have a buddy in Circleville that I hunt with, ill be there in a week and a half. any of you in that area?
Deer are on the move eagleeye has had 3 140 plus bucks on friday that came by his stand and on sunday he had 2 of those came back again at 35 yards i thought it was going to happen and we have seen 2 bobcats in the stand. Its time to rock this weekend dark moon and cool weather watch out...........
Good luck Shawn.

I am headed to McConnelsville down in the South East part of Ohio in a week! I hear rumors that the boys are starting to move...
Benjy
Keep us posted!!
Headed there on nov 11th. Can't wait.
Deer have been moving great this week. I had 4 bucks including a 130 class 10 pt within 15 yards of my stand tonight. The next week to 10 days should be great.

my buddies mom has a ranch outside of Kingston, but toward Chillicothe. small world.
Fred & Burt are headed in tomorrow for their St. Jude auction hunt on my farm. Looking forward to meeting them and getting them set up.
I was fortunate to take a doe opening morning an hour after sunrise. Now it's time to try to get in range of some antlers.
