Title: Arrow selection help
Post by: Mike Falkner on August 08, 2013, 09:46:00 PM
I've been working back from a bad shoulder, trying to polish form with a lighter bow.  With focus on back tension, I find my draw length has grown an inch. So, need some new arras.

Recurve built from a Bingham kit, 53#@28.  I'm drawing 29.5 to back of point, but need to add 2" to safely clear broad heads.  So at least 31".  The bow is center cut; stu's calculator has me shooting broom handles with 150 gr head and 100 gr insert.

Suggestions?  I've shot 55/65 cedars at the shorter draw.  Looking at Gold tips or trad liters maybe.

A 55/75 goldtip will work if you keep it long 31"s should be ok and I would start with 275 grains of point weight. That will get ya darn close, ya may need to add a little point weight or subtract a tad, but I bet ya that a 31" 55/75 GT with that 275 up front will be darn close. Shawn

Thanks Shawn.  I mostly was seeing 3555's at my weight but that was running way weak.

Yeah shooting 57-58#s at your draw makes arrow selection a bit tough as you are on the edge of the .500 spine limit with 150 grain head they may fly, but than they are awful light. Let me know how ya make out. Carbons are real funny, I find them fairly easy to tune until you get a shaft that is 31" or longer for some reason they than become real sensitive to point weight change. Shawn

Weight is a major concern; I want to keep a fairly heavy arrow and some weight up front but at 31 I'm having to go real stiff.  I've been shooting 3555's that fly real well but I'm pulling the field points up on the shelf now and only have 200 up front.

What about a CX Heritage 250?  200 gr point, 50 gr insert, length 31, draw 29.5.  Probably pulling 57# at that draw length.  Stu's calculator shows this bow needing a huge dynamic spine (like high 60's); makes me think I must be doing something wrong.

Forget Stus calculator. The 150 may work and give you enough weight as well. The 250 again loeft 31"s will give ya plenty of weight up front again in the 275 grain point weight range. Shawn

I am shooting a very similar setup, 50#@29" and I draw slightly over 29".  I shoot a 31" .340 (3-60 ACC) with a 250 grain point with that bow.  I have other recurves in the low-upper fifties for draw weight at my draw length and they all tune properly with the same arrow, just lighter points as the weight goes up.

It seems to be heresy to post about such stiff arrows on this site, but my bare shafts group with my fletched out to thirty yards, I get great broadhead flight, and that's all I care about.  You need to gather as many recommendations as you can, personal, charts, calculators, and make an initial guess then tune from there.  This is a good link if you don't have it...   acsbows.com/bareshaftplaning (http://www.acsbows.com/bareshaftplaning.html)
