Only 8 more days here in my state until our squirrel season opens Yipppee!
Dont get me wrong, I love my deer hunting, but the action and shooting opps. while hunting tree rats is second to none, not to mention that pan fried squirrel in a cast iron skillet with gravy and biscuits is tough to beat.
Big game hunting is awesome, but dont miss out on the great challenge and tasty table fare of small game, for it is big game as well, when hunting with trad. gear......it just comes in a smaller package. :biglaugh:
Don't forget the mashed potatoes for that squirrel gravy. Man! I got to wait til Oct 15!
man i wish we had tree rats here in NZ they are fun to shoot at :biglaugh:
It's open here, but been busy at work and home so haven't gotten out maybe this weekend. As far as wild game it don't get any better than frying a few squirrels up. Great practice for the still hunting and shooting too.

One of my absolute favorite wild things to eat! Battered in flour and fried with rice and milk gravy... mmm hmm! Never hunted them with a bow tho... I might starve! ha
I have to wait until October, but your absolutely right! They are an absolute blast... I've been known to "hunt" them from my porch. Not very woodsy but they still taste great and are fun to shoot!
Same here. August 15th and its on.RC
I would love to hunt squirrels with my recurve. Do you only shoot ones on the ground or do you shoot them up in the trees. I am not the best shot and think I would lose a lot of arrows. Shooting up in the trees. I assume if you do you use flu flu's??
been chasing them all summer here. no luck so far but I am gonna nab a few just gotta keep at it. good luck dude!
I grew up in Indiana (Richmond) and always looked forward to the ides of August. Here in KY I have to wait a couple more days -- the 1st Saturday in August. I already know the hickory grove I'll be guarding.
My son killed his first squirrel at 9 years old with me. My grandson (his son) will go with me opening morning to repeat the feat, he is 9 also.
I have opening day off. I'll be out there.
Ive been countin' the days! :bigsmyl:
I like to catch them on the ground or low on a tree trunk. I have not shot any up high although I carry a flu flu or 2 just in case. If there is a lot of mast on the ground they will be there digging through the leaves. When you are in a new area and you find acorns or other nuts dropping look for a fallen log or other blow down nearby to post up next to. Squirrels love to use these as runways. Their instincts tell them to travel quietly by running logs and jumping from tree to tree once the leaves start falling. A good log located near mast and you've got yourself a shooting gallery. Man! Can't wait.
Man, I guess we are spoiled here in Missouri. Squirrel season opens the saturday before Memorial Day and runs through Feb 15th. I don't get out like I used to, but when I was a kid I would have had about 60-80 by now with the .22.
The good ole days.
