I finally pulled the plug and retired after 36 years of putting the job in front of my life.
I am hoping to change things right quick here.
How did retirement help or hinder you folks that have already done this, with respect to allowing more time for the outdoors things like flinging arrows and chasing great beasts?

Congrats on your recent retirement... Enjoy life!!!
:archer:
Congratulations. I have had a job and a wife that allowed me to do a lot of hunting so I probably don't hunt anymore than I did before I retired but now I'm not thinking about work while I'm hunting which is great. Getting a lot more sleep also. I think you're going to enjoy retirement.
Every fella that has retired from my department has had a sort of rebirth. One is near 60 and runs two extensive traplines. One for fisher and marten is 2 hours North of home but the time is now available. Everyday is Saturday and they love it. Congrats to you and enjoy yourself.
I'm not retired, but as a teacher am fortunate to have summers. Make your hobbies your job. Dive in. Sometimes it's hard to know what to do with all of the extra time, so you have to dive in head first. Good luck!
I, too, retired after 36 years and had the time to pursue truly learning archery and coaching. It's been great having the time to simply do what you want to do.
The only catch is that when you are retired, you NEVER get a day off!! :clapper: :clapper: :biglaugh:

Congratulations, Chuck.
I'll be following in your footsteps here in a couple of years.
Tom
Congrats
Thank you !
Change is gonna be slow. Yesterday I was mowing the yard and picking up stuff that needed to go to the dump and thinking about the fact that the next two weekends were already booked and wondering when I was gonna have the time to get back up to my cabin.... then I remembered about Monday thru Friday. . and smiled.
I think I am gonna like this new job.

Congrats Chuck. As you know, I've been retired for a few years now. You should be able to squeeze in a little more time for hunting. My time from September through late November is just about fully booked for hunting.
Never have trouble keeping busy, not necessarily productive, the rest of the year.
Enjoy it. :archer2:
I've been retired a year and a half now. Much more mellow. The great thing is that I am able to shoot in my yard. Now, however, I can shoot when everything is quiet, the kids are in school, others at work. It's a nice quiet world. Enjoy!
Sold my practice last fall & retired. I don't know where I had the time to work :) For 2013, I've been home for less that 2 weeks. I hired a retirement consultant...Whip (Joe Lasch) has kept me hoping all over the country chasing all sorts of critters :) Enjoy...tippit
Retiring was the best move I have ever made! Two years in now.....and I don't really know how I ever had time to go to work!

Chuck,
I've been fully retired for almost two years now. The biggest change to my life is the almost total lack of stress - at least compared to what I put up with during my career. You won't notice it at first but some day you will and that too will make you smile. I accelerated that time frame a bit by returning to meditation.
I retired from the PD back in 98 (28 fun filled years on the job), and retired from the State in 2007, and since then, I have spent more time enjoying the great outdoors than I could have imagined while I was working.
I still piddle around with a part time ambulance driving job, but most of my days belong to me, and I get paid for just breathing; it is a very good thing. My ambulance job paid for my Idaho bear hunt last spring, and will pay for another one next year, God willing.
You are gonna love it!
Dang Bisch no WONDER you shoot 199 arras a day!!!
I'd retire in a minute if someone would pay me to. I have plenty to keep me busy and out of trouble. d;^)
Best wishes Chuck. Have fun!
Congrats on your retirement.
Congrats!!!! With God's grace, I will retire in two years. Enjoy!!!!
Uh, what's a retirement? :dunno:
Congrats Chuck, enjoy it, retirement is great, I retired from the PD 4 years ago, shoot arrows every day, and hunt when I want, oh yea a lot less stress. Enjoy
Way to go and congrats, I look forward to the day. I have way to many hobbies that need more attention. May you get to do what you want, when you want!!
I retired 8 years ago and couldn't enjoy myself more. With a lot of time on my hands, it has been easy to go on more hunts and relax more. One piece of advice though, with all the extra time a person has, it is very easy to spend more money than when you were working! ;)
sounds nice
not sure if I'll ever get there.
:clapper: :clapper:
Congrats
Way to go chuck.. did that in 99.. best job i ever had..
Wow, I dream of elk and retirement! Good for you, enjoy!
42 years at the same job in the same building!
4 more tears to go.
Can't wait!!!!
Have Fun LUCKY
One more convincing post and I may do it too!
Thanks all...
Well, so far it doesn't suck. Been busy all day though, but I still made time to shoot arrows and work on a self bow that has been sitting in a corner for a year already. oh, and some new Doug Fir arrows.
Starting to like this new job.

Congratulation

I left work almost 6 years ago......after 37 1/2 years. Since then I have hunted Illinois, Ohio, South Carolina, Colorado and New Brunswick. Headed for Missouri in October. I shoot just about everyday, tour on my motorcycle with my wife, kayak, fish and once in a while just do nothing because I can. I stump shoot with some other old farts and go to the gym every day. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Yesterday I had nothing to do and only got it half done! :biglaugh:
