I prefer a straight or very slightly dished grip on my bows. Not too many of the bows I collect were made,so I can't be picky about the grip shape when I find one for sale. I've found a few with locator grips(which I hate!) and bought them anyway. I've tried changing the grips with glued in leather in the past, worked ok,but not great.
I just tried apoxie sculpt putty on a couple bows and had perfect results.Give me a minute and I'll get some pics up.
I changed this,

I'll post some pics I took while working on the grip.Could take a little bit though,Photobucket doesn't want to cooperate this morning! :banghead:
Here's the bow with the leather wrap off,you can see how much I have to fill. I wrap the bow with paper and painters tape up to the mark from the wrap to protect the rest of the finish. You don't even really have to,as the Apoxie will clean off with just water before it cures, but I didn't want to mess with it.

Here's the Apoxie mixed and put on the bow. I put on a little extra,so I can sand it down to the exact shape I want. If you put water on your finger, you can feather the edges right into the wood.A little sanding and you can't even feel the transition from the wood to Apoxie. I take the metal ruler and push it down through the Apoxie until it hits the limbs. This way I can see where dead center is the whole time I'm sanding out the shape I want.

Very useful info here. Thanks for posting this as I have one bow I'd like to take to a straight handle.
Put on a new wrap and sideplate and you're good to go. You can't even tell that it's not wood under the wrap.WAY easier than how I used to do it with leather and glue.
I mix up a little more Apoxie than I think I'll need, just so I don't come up short.Instead of throwing it away each time,I made a few things.
Here's a candy I made to put in a box of chocolates for my mother in law,and a puppy "deposit" to put on the new rug for my wife to find. Always good to do things like that once and a while, keeps 'em on their toes! LOL!!

What is the brand of putty you are using. Looks like a good way to modify a grip!

Hey Nick, I like your sense of Humour. LOL. I wonder what the mother in law would do if you put the puppy-do in the box of chocolates :biglaugh:

That got a chuckle out of me,
Me too! :biglaugh:
Nick,
Great job on the grip re-do. That is how I have been doing them also. There was a thread a while back where you showed your leather trick which was also helpful.
The putty just works perfect though!!

I'm using Aves Apoxie sculpt.I talked to them, explained what I was doing and that was the product they recommended.

I was threatened with bodily harm if the pup messed on the rug,so I HAD to do the prank! :D

Dang Brian,I must be getting old,I don't even remember posting about the leather/glue! It works good also, but you're right, this putty is the way to go.
Great idea, cant even tell you've done anything to the grip with the wrap on.
Love the post and the sense of humor!!!
Great idea and info...thanks! Would love to be there when your MIL bites into that "candy".
Amazing Nick,I also like the bow you did the job on.
LOL! Thanks guys. Butchie, that "candy" probably won't even slow that old bird down!
JohnI, Thanks. ;)
Oh,I forgot to put in that the Apoxie has a 2-3 hour work time,so it's real easy to get it to where you won't need much sanding before it sets up.You don't have to be in a rush with it,like some other materials I've tried.
I don't like locator grips on longbows either - especially Hill style bows.
I bought an old Louie Armbruster, Zebra longbow last month that had a locator grip.
Filled it with some plastic wood, let it set about 12 hrs. then rasped and sanded it to a straight grip.
I believe I would of liked the Apoxie better, due to it being easier to shape to the riser and it probably does not shrink like the plastic wood does, but I allowed for that.
Thanks for showing, Goshawkin.

Lambow,Nice bow!
Yep,I've tried a few things, but I think this Apoxie is the way to go for sure. Zero shrinkage.
Real fine job on that grip Eric.
Hope I remember Apoxie if/when I ever get to another grip rebuild. Good info Nick. Thanks
Thanks Nick, and Buddy.
Need to stain or take a rasp to that leather grip. I don't really want to replace the grip leather, b/c I like how thin it is.... but don't know how it got so splotchie.
Light Weight bondo with fiberglass mixed in it works really fast and great. I have shaped a lot of grips with it. It works especially great for custom fit grips on phenolic risers. You simply paint the riser with carbon colored enamel when finished and you can never tell it was done. You can get a perfect form fit to the hand doing this. Let it almost set and have the customer wear a pair of nitrile form fitting gloves and grip the bow in shooting position. you get a grip that fits the hand like no other.
I have also mixed up Smooth-On with sanding of the phenolic and used it. That works really great too. You just have to keep an eye on it and apply when it gets just a little stiff and then let it set until it barely takes an impression.
God bless, Steve
Nick - Finally decided today to follow suit on a Wesley I have that has a locator grip. If it works out as well as it should, then I may do it on my Jerry Hill as well. I ordered two 1/4# packs.....reckon that's enough?
Thanks for the tips, and I appreciate those who posted up about their experience with other products to accomplish the same thing.
Sorry Rob,I didn't see your post until now. That will be way more than enough.
Steve,I tried the glove trick while a bow was setting up,works great with the Apoxie too.It would probably be real nice on a recurve grip.
Here's another Timberline I just finished,

I left a little extra lip up near the top of the riser and shot it then sanded,shot/sanded, a few times until it just felt perfect.
Nick - so, I finally am getting around to taking my Jerry Hill Wildcat to a straight grip. Here's a pic or two of the progress. Will sand her out after tomorrow morning's hunt. Does anyone have a link to a good how-to on cutting, forming, and stitching a new leather grip?

Green,
I don't have the link, but do remember there is a thread or two on replacing the leather... either on Pow Wow and/or the how -to's.
I've used it on a few bows with good results but never thought to make dog droppings with it. That is thinking out side the box.
