That is a beauty.......
Nice looking bow for sure. Is the riser some sort of Rosewood? What are the specs and the materials used on that bow, Roy?
Just so I don't blow it Mike I'll let Longerbow get on here and give all the specs and details.
God bless,Mudd
That's a beautiful piece of work. I haven't yet handled a Vixen....are they all belly trapped to that extent? Very nice!
Good lookin' bow!

All I've seen are trapped.
I think mine is more so than Longerbows'.

Nice looking bow Roy. Monday through Friday every morning I go to Jame's and have coffee. So just like Mudd's bow I had my hands all over her and I really do know just how sweet of a bow you have there Roy. Also everyday this week James and I talked about that stone knife you sent James. Only if that old knife could talk, wow could you imagine the story's we would hear. Happy shooting Roy----Dan Berry
Mudd, I've been in archery for a long time, but have to plead ignorant to the term "trapped", although the term is familiar. Can you enlighten? :dunno: Will
If you look closely at the limbs you'll see that the back of the limb is wider than the belly side of the limb.
I have see bows that are reverse trapped..that is the belly side of the limb is wider than the back side of the limb.
That's about the depth of my knowledge except to say... they work!
God bless,Mudd
AH! It all comes back now ....... I believe M.R. Hamilton (Scorpion Longbow) used that type of lay-up, although, according to "traditional Bowyers of America", he used a reverse taper (belly to back). Thanks Mudd.
Will
You can get all types of answers about trapping limbs. Some guys say it makes for a lighter(faster) limb. Some say it helps with handshock. Some use it for tillering, deciding where the limb bends.Other guys use it to get a bow to make weight. James must have it figured out though.I had him build me a Serpentine years ago, heavily trapped limbs. It was the best r/d longbow I've shot to date.If I didn't make the switch to 100% American semi longbows,I'd still have that Serpentine. It was my last R/d longbow to go.
Thanks Mudd. It is much clearer to see in the pics of the Vixen, but yes, I can see it on yours now. One of the best longbows I ever owned was a Great Plains Rio Bravo that Bill built for me in '97 with trapped limbs. An absolutely awesome D limb'd bow. Everywhere I turn these days (this thread) JD's bows are grabbing my attention. "Resistance is futile!"
Here are the specs on the bow that is the subject of this thread. It is 68 inches long and 52# at 28". The riser is Brazilian walnut and the limbs are amber bamboo with Koa (Tigerwood) just below the clear glass on both sides. The limb tips have a brown fiberglass wedge in each. It looks heavenly and shoots as well. As always, pictures do it no justice!
By the way, I'm fairly certain the word "trapped" comes from the word "trapezoid." The cross section of those limbs resembles a trapezoid.
I was there also.JD makes an awesome bow....good looking and it shoots good too. While I was ogling JD's bows I asked Mudd some questions about bows......all I can say is sometimes getting useful information out of Mudd is like getting blood out of a turnip........

Hahaha! Just because I'm not one who is hung up with all the details Cobweb...lol
I know what I like and what shoots for me... everyone else has to figure that out for themselves.
In other words....mileage may vary...lol
God bless,Mudd
PS: You know JD's bows are more than just works of art if Cobweb can make them group...lol J/K
PSS: I could not agree more with Longerbow...pictures don't even come close to showing off the beauty of these bows.
What a beautiful longbow! I absolutely love my Vixen and I know you will to. These bows are works of art but they are better in that they are deadly accurate as well. I am hoping my new Vixen will help me put meat in the freezer this fall. Happy shooting Roy and thanks for posting Mudd.
Jw
Ps. Green if you pick a Vixen or a Morning Star up and shoot one you will catch the fever I promise! They are irrisistable.
Berry's bows are sweet and Mudd that white has to be one of the coolest looking bow out there thanks for showing it again.

You're correct. How to do it is where bowyers differ. Back to belly, belly to back (or both),the angle of the parallel sides, etc. A lot of different theories on what works best.
Nice bow!! Was that a ninja sneaking around the shed, or just a shadow? lol
I will definitely be hunting with my vixen this year...... although I have been shooting my old serpentine and it really is a great shooter as well.
