Title: KME and Simmons Advice?
Post by: Butchie on August 02, 2013, 10:01:00 AM
OK, so I have some 165 grain Simmons Interceptors, my KME knife sharpener and the new KME 3 sided diamond jewel stick.  For those who have used this combo, please offer your insight.

1) Where do you mount the head in relation to the jaws? Tight to ferrule?

2)What angle are you setting the KME to?

3)Push into the blade, away from blade or back & forth?  Light pressure I do know!

Pics and any other tips for this set up greatly appreciated.  Looking to get these "KME Sharp"!!!

Thanks!

Talked to the boys from KME at Denton Hill. They mounted the Simmons to where the majority of the blade is parallel to the clamp. They said that getting the first angle may take a while. After that very light strokes to perfection. I'm excited to try mine out.

My jewel stick hasn't made it to Texas yet, but when it does, I'll post up.  I always push away from me from tip to tail, but without a flat plane to work with, I may have to work from the center outward towards the front and then the rear.  Sharpenin's tricky!

Dang'd if Ron hasn't done it again! Rec'd my jewel stick from him this morning, and promptly jig'd up a 125 Shark in my knife jig. The first two things you'll notice about using the jewel stick in this manner is that it's longer than the normal stones so you have a longer stroke.  It is also heavier, so just slide it across the edge using its' own weight.

Using circular strokes from tip to tail, I quickly had the angles down using the coarse head.  I then used "away" strokes from tip to tail taking about 5 strokes away to complete one pass...overlapping them as I went.  It didn't take very long to have extremely sharp Sharks!

Thanks again Ron for meeting the needs of your customers.  You do it right!

There ya go... Good review Rob!

Now all you need is to hook up with Bisch and get in some actual hunting vs. targets!        :knothead:    :bigsmyl:

Thanks Green!

Played around with it myself enough to figure it out without bothering Ron.  Used much the same technique you described once I got the angle right.  They'll be like a hot knife through butter on whitetail this season!

I found circular strokes to be the best as well.

Doc - I'm headed up to the panhandle in a couple of weeks to spend a few days sneakin' up on some pigs.  Certainly hope to watch these Sharks disappear behind some shoulders.
