Well after much thought I have decided to take my 12 year old son elk hunting with me this year.My two buddies and I are not back packing in this year,we rented a yurt in unit 6.We have hunted this area two years in a row a couple years ago.My son will not be hunting elk ,he is not shooting enough weight ,but he will be getting a small game license.I told him he had to get in shape if he wanted to go,and to my surprise he started running every other day {better then sitting around playing x box}.Elk hunting is not the best in the area but to us its more then the kill.Colorado is some beautiful country and just being out there is an experience I hope he will always remember .I will take pictures and try to figure out how to post them after we get back.We are leaving September 7 and I cant waite to share this with my son.
He'll gain a better understanding and love you more for it some day.
Good stuff.
Good idea Dad. You've both been waiting a long time for this. Have a great time.
Great idea, can't beat a day in the field with your child.
Good Man! You got it right Dad! I'll be there in 8 years with my son (4 1/2 yrs.). You'll cement a life time bond of trust, love, courage, friendship, hard work, cooperation, etc. :campfire:
Have a blast and be patient! Another so many years he'll be packing your elk out ;)
Look forward to your story.
Kris
Only small game season open is Grouse after the first of September I think it is, squirrel and rabbit don't open till October, did you check to see if there were any left over doe tags???
He's in for a treat! Way to go.
Thanks everyone .oldgoat2 I did see only grouse will be open ,I will have to check on leftover doe tags
That's awesome! Hope you all have a great time.
Glad you are getting out there with him. Great memories to come. So many people wait so long to get their children out on the "big trips" and then they are grown and gone. Way to go Dad.

Don't dilly dally, looking for doe tag, they go fast here! He will have time of his life either way! Kudos for taking him by the way. Enjoy!
I elk hunted with my son last year... he is 34 years old. We have a great relationship, largely due to taking him afield when he was young.
It's one of the best investments you can make toward a lifetime relationship.
Good luck and God's speed!
I have great memories of my elk trips with my Dad before I was old enough to hunt. Enjoy!
Oh man, you guys are going to have a blast! I can only imagine getting to go on an elk hunt when I was 12....back then a spike buck was BIG game and elk hunting wasn't even in my imagination yet. Have fun and share the stories with us!
Awesome. My dad took me with him to tag along when I was 9, horseback, just he and I and a gnarly old guide. Best week of my life and repaid in full when my brothers and I took him back to CO. in 2011. This "investment" of yours is priceless.
I can't wait to take my boys on their first big hunting trip. Take plenty of pics!
Good deal.
Have him bugle and cow call to be a major part of the action.
Encourage him to shoot a few grouse.
He should remove the ivory teeth, help dress, and pack out as much meat as he is comfortable with to be a serious part of the team.
Good luck!
Way to go buddy!!
Lucky kid, way to go Dad!
Ed you didn't go to Denton?
He'll remember this his entire life, good on you!
Harvest or no harvest it will be an adventure, to be savored for years.
Best of luck.
BTW love to see pictures, especially mountain scenery in the background for us flatlanders.
Thanks guys ,it should be real exciting for booth of us.He is a good shot and he got his first deer last year.I took him to south Carolina in may no shots on pigs but we did have a close encounter with a timber rattler that now resides in the man cave
I love Colorado's north park.
Good luck!
Best of luck! Your son will have a great time I'm sure!
That's great! My dad would take me out hunting a lot when I was young. I'm sure it was much tougher to have me along with him. Now that he is in his 80s I get to take him hunting and can't wait to take him elk hunting again this year.
Wonderful! You are for a lifetime of enjoyment. Maybe a little map and compass is in order too? I love hunting with my son. He is 19 now and we are going elk hunting again this fall.
Bjorn the map and compass is a great idea.I think I will get him his own compass and a copy of my map and teach him how to use .It is much harder hunting with my son but it's well worth it.Last season when he got his deer I was more excited then him. After the shot he was shaking but I was shaking the whole tree. Thanks again for all the input,
My son and I hunted north park three years ago with Crossedarrows and crew. No elk killed but it was a great time with my son. Martin
I think I was there that year we hunted with crossed arrows two years in a row.First year I came out with my buddy, second year I brought my dad.
Good memories for your son and he will always cherish them. At that age kids remember those moments, smells and sounds. Lucky boy!
Good Luck John hope you see that one you saw years ago enjoy your time together. Widow
