I am looking to add a few books to my library, specifically books of trad hunting, not so much shooting books, ie form, tuning etc. One I am looking at is "Have bow,Will Travel" by Don Thomas. Is it any good? Any other suggestions?
Shane
I really liked Barry Wensel's "Once upon a Tine"
Some of my favorites: The Witchery of Archery by Thompson, Hunting with the Bow and Arrow by Pope, Fred Bear's Field Notes by Fred Bear, and Bows on the Little Delta by St. Charles. These are all well known but there many others out there: Jay Massey, Fred Anderson, Chet Stevenson, Dick Lattimer, Howard Hill, et al.
Do a search for books. There are a few earlier topics on this that all have great ideas.
Don Thomas is a very good writer, and not only is Have Bow Will Travel good, but I can vouch for Longbow Country and Longbows in the Far North, as well.
"Longbow" by Jay Campbell is a great read ..... Except for that questionable story about a giant turkey!! :D
Just get all of the Don Thomas books.. Great stuff. I also want to read Man Made of Elk by Peterson. Have heard great things. (Anyone have a loaner???).
X2 for "longbow"
Thanks guys! I will look into all the suggestions, as well as the Don Thomas books. I've always enjoyed his magazine articles, so I thought his books might be good.
Anything by E Donnell Thomas Jr
Mike Mitten's "One with the Wilderness" is a very good read as well.
"Longbows in the Far North" is one of my favorites.
These are some I have, all very good reads.
The Old Bowhunter--Chester Stevenson
Come November & Once Upon a Tine--Wensels
Longbows In The Far North--E.Donnal Thomas Jr.
A Thousand Campfires--Jay Massey
Bows On The Little Delta--Glenn St. Charles
Whitetail Magic-Roger Rothaar
One With The Wilderness--Mike Mitten
Longbow--Jay Campbell
Camfire Reflections--T.J. Conrads
I agree with all of the above. Jay Massey's A thousand Camp Fires and Bowhunting Alaska's Wild Rivers, Fred bears Field Notes is a favorite. Dwight Schuh's Bowhunting for Mule Deer and Bugling for Elk are great bowhunting books and since Larry Jones is part of it I would consider it traditional. If nothing else it will get you fired up on bowhunting DIY hunts.
I would also add these titles to the great list of books above.
Bows on The Little Delta- Glen St Charles
Tension on the string- Mark Baker
A Bowhunter's tales- Charlie Lamb
Whitetail Magic- Roger Rothaar
Come November- Gene Wensel
Bare Bow- Dennis Dunn
Must reads are Fred Anderson's books "The Traditional Way" and Toxicated". I also highly recommend Jay Campbell's book "Longbow--A Hunting Life".
If you're going to get Barry's "Once Upon A Tine", you need to get Gene's "Buckskin and Bone" as well.
Wish I could get a hold of a copy of Sagittarius or In Africa by Bob Swinehart....
Straight Shooting by John Schulz if you can find it is good.
Hunting the Hard Way - Howard Hill
Mike Mitten's book......
Fred Bear's Field Notes
Trailing a Bear by Bob Munger
A Man Made of Elk by David Petersen is a good read too.
"Anything by E Donnell Thomas Jr" x 2
Enjoy his writing style. "Double Helix" and "Longbows in Far North" are great. Just started Longbow Country.
Liked "Bows on the Little Delta" - which has more history background of the sport. "Just Another Old Bowhunter" was a great read and had some biographical elements. Also looking forward to reading Once upon a Tine (won in the auction).
Try out Jim Hamm's "Ishi and Elvis" - you'll be pleasantly surprised
Well of course "Have Bow Will Travel" is a good book..I'm in it :D Seriously all of Don Thomas' books are great reads as is Jay Campbell's "Longbow"
Read Just Another Old Bowhunter by Tom Kidwell.
Very cool story about this book. Not only is it a great read but I passed mine around a couple years ago.
Someone was looking for a good book, I sent it to him with the request that he pass it on and after a year whoever has it send it back to me.
I am current not at home but many trad guys signed it for me. The last, Dustin, was at a seminar put on by Tom and talked to him. Tom signed it for me and wrote a short piece about a prank on Fred Bear and sent that back to me with the book. He also gave me his next two books!
Was very cool and very touching.

Best of Traditional Bowhunter
Either of John Schulz's 2 books, although they're difficult to find.
Reading "Tension on the String" (Mark Baker) and "Whitetail Magic" (Roger Rothaar) is like sitting around a campfire and listening to hunting tales. Great stuff!

Is there really such a book??? Hmmmmmm. Would love to read that.
An old thread but I'll add my two cents.
Bush Pilot Bowman and Backwoods Bucks by David Bickish.
I second the Fred Anderson books as well as Man Made of Elk by David Petersen. But to that I would add Petersen's new book, Going Trad, as well.
I am presently reading Tension on the String by Mark R. Baker. I haven't yet finished it but it's been a good book thus far.

Of all the books I have read Mike's is my favorite.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Once Upon A Tine" by Barry Wensel. He is a great storyteller! I don't like to read but read this book in a few days!
Hearts Blood by David Peterson is a great read, especially if your interested in what it is that compels people to hunt. Going Trad by David Peterson is great as well.
I also just finished Howard Hill's Hunting the Hard Way and enjoyed it very much.

Anything by Don Thomas is a winner. You also might like "Ishi and Elvis" by Jim Hamm where he builds a self bow while hunting a big buck on a ranch he is recovering from sheep overgrazing - excellent
Gene wensel "come November"
