You might remember my phenominal luck in drawing a Utah Bison tag last year. They must really like me out there, because today I received a call from the Utah Division of Wildlife informing me that my name came up as an alternate for a limited entry bull elk tag in the Fish Lakes unit.
WooHoooooo!! Here we go again!!! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
I've been wearing out my computer and telephone all afternoon trying to get started on the research. Would have been nice to have more planning time, but I'm not looking this gift horse in the mouth!!
If anyone has any intel on the Plateau/Fish Lakes area of Utah I am all ears! I already have made a couple of excellent contacts and think I will end up in good shape as far as spots to try. But always open to other ideas as well.
That is too awesome!! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
Great news Joe! Good luck!!!
Joe, you have to be in it to win it.
Congrats, looking forward to hearing your adventure :saywhat: :dunno:
Congrats again bud! Hope we can find some more spots!
Congrats Joe!
Congrats Joe! Wishing you a great hunt.
Congrats on the tag...!
I'd go buy a lottery ticket..... :readit:
Good things happen to good people. At least I know what we will be feasting on at the next PBS function!
Go get em Joe!
Congratulations . :bigsmyl:
Randy Chamberlin
Congratulations Joe! I haven't spent much time on the fish lakes unit, but I have on the boulder unit, my best advice would be to take a week before season and donsome serious glassing, the big outfitters in that state have their guys out looking all summer long, find a big one early and get in on him the first morning! great elk hunting abound in that state! Best of luck to you! Looking forward to hearing about it
That is a great area. I did a muzzy hunt in that unit 4 years ago. The elk were up high during the night and as soon as first light came they started moving down the MNT towards the private property. You should have a good hunt they have been killing some studs in there that last two years.
Congrats Joe...I look forward to your story of your hunt and the pics which you take while on your hunt...
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!
good for you, we expect lots of photos or a video of your adventures. good luck.
Congrats!
Bisch
Nice!!!
There you go Joe  Not drawing Iowa didn't turn out that bad after all.
Congratulations on the tag! With the luck you are having, you might want to plan for a couple days playing in Las Vegas after the hunt.
I'm not sure yet when I am going to be able to hunt. The season dates are Aug. 17 thru Sept. 13. I can do approx. 11 days of actual hunting either on the front end or the back end of the season. Right now I'm leaning strong toward the back end. I won't be able to get out ahead of time at all though, so will have to learn on the fly once I get there.
Congrats Joe! I am happy for you man!
Good for you big guy! How many points did you have going in? I think I have 9 now. You do have the golden horseshoe willed to me, right? :D
Congrats Joe,
As Steve said it couldn't happen to a nicer guy
Woohoo! That's exciting. Can't wait to hear how this one plays out!
goodjob ....ENJOY
Only had four points going in, so this had to be just through the random draw. Fish Lakes isn't one of the hardest units to draw, but it isn't easy. In 2012 it took 8 or 9 points to be guaranteed a tag. There were two NR tags issued through the random draw, and with 4 points I figured about a 4% chance of drawing. Someone pinch me - I can't believe my luck!
Yes Julian, the Golden Horseshoe will be yours someday. But not until I die. I'm hoping that you are well past your prime by then ;)
Wow, that is great!!! Congrats!!! Keep us posted.
Awesome, Joe! Good luck!
WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I know somebody. But, you knew that. I've hunted Plateau Fish Lake with Tom, once in the past. I just missed out on a late season any weapon tag with Tom in the Boulder Parker Mtn area.
Lemme look at a map and I can give you some info on where we hunted. In the meantime, I suspect you could call your Utah contact and get some general info.
regards,
homebru
Super Joe! Glad to see you draw! Hope you get a monster!
Yep, Tom was the first guy I called. Would love to do a hunt with him, but I sort of blew my hunt budget up with that bison trip in December.
I'm comfortable enough hunting on my own this time of year. I have all the stuff I need for a good camp, and am already getting some good ideas on where to start. I hope to at least visit Tom's camp while I'm out there. He's a fun guy, and consider him a friend after our trip last winter.
I'm looking forward to the stories Joe. Good luck on the hunt.
Joe Whip Lasch. The Jimmie Johnson of Trad Gang! The Golden Horseshoe...did I miss the memo on how to sign up for the turned back tags?
I don't remember anything special to get in line for turned back tags. If there were a box I'm sure I would have checked it - just don't recall. But I don't ask questions - I just say YESSSSSSS!!! when they call! :bigsmyl:
Good luck Joe!
Joe, go late, the bulls up there start screaming around the 1st of Sept. They also might not be in the same areas every year, if they're not in one particular place, move. I'm not at home but when I get back I'll look my maps over and shoot you a pm.
Dan
Congrats Whip. You seem to have a lot better luck than me.
I am positive that I don't understand.
However I can tell that you're excited and happy....I am happy for you as well.
Does being an alternate make it a "shoo-in" that you'll get to hunt?
Congratulations!
God bless,Mudd
Awesome Joe! Can I carry your bow for ya?
You ARE one charmed, hunting fool, WHIP!
Along with the others, my congrats and tip of the hat for your luck
Livin La Vida Whipa!!
COOL! You're going to be busy this season.
Good for you Joe!! So, what is the bow of choice? That shiney new one or one of the tried and proven veterans?
The shiny new one, of course! :goldtooth:
RER Vital pulls 55 @ my draw. :archer2: I'm really liking it and it has already moved to the front of the line.
The poor trusty Robertson is in the classifieds - need to raise some cash ;)
Mudd, as an alternate my name was next up on the list for a tag if one of the people who originally drew it turned it back in. I had two days to decide if I wanted the tag or not, but once I called to confirm, it is mine.
I didn't use the full two days to make up my mind :readit:
Two hours was plenty. :D
WOW Joe,have fun and good luck
Well, PETA will be happy to hear that the Robertson is out of your hands after the trail of carcasses it left behind.
Greg, Greg, Greg....
It's not the bow ;) :D
I'd go scout and cook for you Joe, but I would worry about what the weather would be like. :biglaugh:
Well I'd say this makes up for not getting your Iowa tag...and then some! Congrats. Looking forward to hearing about it.
Lots of good info on that unit right here

I lot of good information but I do not agree with his assessment of the unit and the hunt. There are lots of quality bulls in the unit but you have to find them. Finding some local knowledge will go a long way to being successful.
Good luck Joe. Looking forward to a good story after the hunt. Oh and maybe a elk burger at Compton :)
I used to hunt there in the seventies. That's too long ago to give you useful info. And that was before I started hunting elk. I know the herd is pretty good sized down there now. I used to hunt on the Boobe hole. It is over the mountain from Johnson's reservoir. We used to see elk back then all the time. It is beautiful country. You are going to have a blast. Gary
Ah, the Boobie hole.......Tom knows that place quite well. As I understand, the Boobie hole is private land. I could be wrong.
homebru
Whip! Awesome news. You r going to have quads of steel by the end of September...either that or by the last day u will need Tom and I to carry your bow and carry you on our shoulders. :goldtooth:
Congrats!
How's that saying go? What doesn't kill you makes you strong? We will see how that turns out!!
Tom mentioned that he camped on the Boobie Hole, but I think Nate is right - that is on the private land.
Maps are ordered and the hard research begins! I did have the name of the guy the did the story on MM, and had sent him a PM, but haven't heard back. I hadn't seen that link to his story though - looks great! I'm headed over there now for some bedtime reading....
Thank you Whip for taking your time to explain to me how it works.
Congratulations again!!
Make it a hunt of a lifetime!
God bless,Mudd
A while ago a guy posted on another site looking for a packer in the Fish Lake unit. I had given him Tom Dowland name as an option. IPM'd jinn yesterday to see how his research was going, just heard back from tonight. It seems that he backed out on the hunt and turned in his tag. Most likely I got his tag!
Thank you very much! :D
I am lookin' forward to the adventure already Whip!
This IS gonna be your year!
Keep the wind in your face and drop the string on a big-un!
Shoot straight, Shinken
:archer2:
Way to go Joe! Looking forward to a great tale and maybe some elk venison at your campfire at one of the gatherings. Good Hunting!
Congrats Joe ... Best of luck to ya and look forward to the tales of the adventure, be safe. :archer2:
I wouldn't be putting much money into the lottery Joe, you've pretty much used up that luck. Or saved it for what really counts! :campfire:

The upper end of the Boobe hole is National Forest. We used to camp across the road from a spring that was in the pine trees. It had an old stove with bullet holes in it sitting by it.Gary
