Hey all,
After looking through a couple of catalogs and my sorry knife collection I thought I would ask and see what everyone carries with them when they head into the woods. I may have to go and buy a decent knife so you can give recommendations too.
What knife do you use for your field dressing chores? Do you carry a different knife on your belt or in your quiver? I'd like to hear about what cutlery you all have afield.
Thanks for the time.
Nala
there are many knife junkies like myself that will give you a wide range of answers to this. when hunting i carry a long knife, a bowie and a skinner. many times i wear a neck knife as well. there is no doubt in my mind that you could easliy get by with one good, all around knife but why do that with so many talented knife makers out there!!! :bigsmyl:
Randall Model 3-5.
I only carry one knife a Buck 107 that I purchased in the early 80's. I use it for stream fishing to deer hunting with everything in between, even completely butchered two deer with it from field dressing to preparing the meat for the freezer.
GERBER GATOR FOLDER AND UNCLE HENRY FOLDER
RANDALL STAGHORN SKINNING KNIFE AND A DOUG CAMPBELL CAPER.
I'm with ADKmountainken - I'm a knife junkie. Here are 3 that I carry the most. The big one is a Natchez Bowie by Mike Mann (Idaho Knife Works) the medium sized knife is a Kabar that my Grandfather bought in 1924. The Trapper style folder is made by Cammilus. I have a Nessmuk style fixed blade knife enroute from Mike Mann, I plan on retiring my Grandfathers knife.

Doug Campbell Caper, and my Helle Fjellman.
Kershaw "Scallion" AO clipped to my pocket, Helle "Veidemann" for a skinner, and a SOG "Team Leader" (new, Durotech steel) for all around camp knife. When I might be way out for a week I bring along my Becker BK9. If I could only take one with me I would go with the Team Leader.
My favorites, in no particular order: Buck 110, Helle Nying, Cold Steel Bird and Trout, Outdoor Edge Field Lite and a Roger Clark rifleman's knife (my one and only hand forged knife to date). I've got an Outdoor Edge Whitetail Skinner somewhere on the bottom of the Llano River that I really need to replace.
I've already got an order in with Santa for a Kershaw Leek.
Gerber Gator JR and a Gerber Game Pro, both folders. I also have a Gerber Freeman, SV30 blade belt knife that will be seeing some use soon. All of them sharpen up nicely. The Freeman is very sharp. Jim.
well the knives i have are a helle, a buck 103 a boker and a few hand made from my blacksmith buddy Curt lyles, I love them all but the boker is the one i carry the most ,

This is Everready, before and after rescaling. Everready empties them out in the field. A Buck Vanguard rides in the pack. A Spyderco Endura or Kershaw Leek is clipped to the right front pocket.
The Vanguard and a filet knife do the butchering.

Top is a Helle Wind, modified to full tang,
The folder is a CRKT Bladelock, my EDC
The bottom blade is one of my own forged blades.
I usually take all 3 out with me (just in case! :D )
Ms. Killdeer,
If you would not mind my asking, did you do the "rescaling" yourself? It is a mighty fine looking knife with a lot of character; and no doubt a lot of history.
Best Wishes,
WindWalker
Sawmill Creek, Alaska
I have a Charles May Lil' Bladie Mae, Bob Dozier Master Skinner (on the way), Queen 2-blade hunter, and Bark River Mini Skinner. I'll get a couple more Bark Rivers in A2 Steel and All the others are in D2.
I haven't handled one of Robtattoo's knives, but I've seen quite a few pics and he makes some great designs and uses good steel. I'll be contacting him pretty soon for one. Check out his knives, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Nope, my friend Jimmy the Geek did that. He's a master machinist and a watchmaker, and had never attacked a knife project before. He undercut the bolsters and dovetailed the scales in, and pinned them to boot. The scales are lignum vitae, and I daresay that the knife, considerably heavier now, will outlast me.
Killdeer :)
heres two that i will bring with me when i come over and may even be a give away who knows ya never know ya luck :biglaugh: (http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u85/wolfman_031/CIMG1408.jpg) (http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u85/wolfman_031/CIMG1389.jpg)

Randall Model 19-5, 25-5 or 3-5 depending on my mood.
I carry three knives, an Old Timer with a gut hook, a Gerry Risener custome knife, and my favorite a Buck 110 folder.
I broke the tip off the 110 and sent it back to buck and they fixed the tip and resharpened it at no cost. I've had this knife for over ten years.
Helle Harding is my #1 player.
However, I will also be carrying a Spyderco Moran this year, it's a heck of a slicer and while not traditional in style or looks, its very functional and easy to carry in the Tek-Lok sheath.
Usually I have a Gerber LST folder and a slightly more meaty Gerber sheath knife that the family bought me for Christmas last year. I've also been known to carry a kukri, or a Marine combat knife or a tomahawk. Just because.
A Victorinox Hunter. Red Scales.

Bob Dozier Pro Guide and leave the whetstone at home.
Here are two "primitive" knives I made using deer forleg bones and sinew. The Blades are the same model which Ferret showed us a few threads ago! Epoxy over sinew to water proof it. I am building a neck-knife sheath for one and putting the other on a quiver strap. (I'll post a photo of those sheaths when I get them done).
Harry.

A couple of Helle knives I made up, one Harding and one Polar.
Yep that Jeremy's stamp. The woods are Ebony and birdseye Maple. Blooded it the first day I carried it. Good Mojo.

I still wear an old Herters Bow Hunters Belt Kit I bought in 1971 for $7.39. Comes with a 5" blade and 4" stag handle. The sheath also holds a 8" file and sharpening stone. The whole rig is similar to the one Bear sold for years.
Which one do I carry hunting? That's a tough decision I have to make every time I head for the woods. :biglaugh:
Well, I have several to choose from...although not as many as Ron!
On my back quiver I have one of Stickshooter's blades attached and in my backpack I currently have a Tippet caper and a Puma. All of them are scary sharp and definately do the job. I'll probably change the Puma and use another knife from time to time this year, but for now, these are my go-to knives.
Claudia
I have a "new" Knife that was given to me by my "brother" adkmountainken and it is VERY special to me!!!!!
It was made by Matt Lesnewski of ML Knives in Amsterdam N.Y. It has moose antler scales and rides in a beautiful leather "moutain man" style sheath. It will be riding on my belt for many years to come!!!!!
Still in my pocket though, will be the Buck 110 folder that my lovely wife Lisa gave to me on our first Christmas together 20 years ago.
I wish I had aknife to carry hunting  <><
I carry a Helle Godbit like the one in Ron's picture (bottom row second in from the left) and I carry a small Bear Cuttlery knife that looks like this:
ron, how do you get all those randalls?
Old Imperial Knife Co. skinner I aquired with "green stamps" when I was about 7-8 years old! Don't know much about it, but still use it.
Finding myself beginning to typically just carry an old gerber LST folder and an older, schrade Sharpfinger.- They're smaller, lighter, and don't get in the way as much....
