Title: Zip ties.....
Post by: LookMomNoSights on July 16, 2013, 03:18:00 PM
When I got my Zipper Nitro last year,  the cat wiskers were put on with small zip ties....Ive never seen this before but,  I have to say....Ive had no problems and they seem to work fantastic!   Im setting up a new string and Im going to use the ties like my original string was set up.   I wanted to know if anyone else uses this method to 1. attach silencers and 2.....Anyone ever try one as a nock point?
Cuz Im thinking of that as well!!!!   :saywhat:

I've seen whiskers zip-tied as well.  I much prefer the serving thread method the fellows from Hawaii have video describing. It is easy, looks good, and very cheap. Also very light on the string.

I also prefer serving thread on for nock locators. I'd be concerned about sharp edges of zip ties on the string. I also wonder about tag ends of zip ties poking my lip.

I use zip-ties for my silencers.  Love them!  You can get them very tight if you pull them closed with pliers, yet you can slide them if you need to for tuning.  I've used them with cat whiskers and they look fine, but they really shine with wool puffs, you can't even see them once the wool ball blooms.

I wondered about using them for nock points, but I was concerned with movement and I really love dental floss for nock point.

I love zip-ties for darn near everything.  Always have some close at hand.

I've used them quite frequently.  So quick, and if you buy the good, small, black ones they last forever.

They will damage your string in the long run.  I've had it happen twice and won't use them again.

No damage on my strings.  The zip-tie never touches the string.  I lay the wool yarns length-wise on the string, nine yarns encircling the string.  Then just cinch with zip-tie.  Never had any damage over the course of thousands and thousands of shots.

I too use the Zip-ties , without any problems, and have done for years.

I think Ill keep using them for silencers....but most likely not for nocking points.

I've received bows from a couple of custom bowyers in the past that used zip ties. I've also used them with success. But I do prefer the tied on cat whiskers ala' this youtube vid.

when I picked up my bow from Bob Morrison, he had two strings with it and both had zip ties holding the cat whiskers

My new RER came with 'em.

Never used them on a string but I have used them to attach a small Black Diamond headlamp to my bow for night shooting and frog gigging.  It works great, just like a tactical light on a pistol or something.  Wherever my bow points, there is light!

So I guess using them for silencers is more popular than I thought!   I set up 2 strings last night (one of mine and one for the Ms.) and they just work fantastic.   Maybe serving them on is a more "traditional" approach....and maybe some do not like how that little zip tie looks once its on there,  but as for me....Im loving how they work out so good!  All kinds of cool colors out there too.  :saywhat:    The ties I am using dont create any extra weight either, as they are very small.  Probably less than all the wraps of b50 or d97 to serve them on!

I've had them cut a strand on my string as well I don't use them any more

Mitch,  any idea how that happened?  More specifically,  was the zip tie work its way so that it was in direct contact with your string?
If Bill, Bob Morrison and Kevin at RER are using them....that gives confidence in them, I gotta say!

I have tied mine on for years with no problems and choose not to use zip ties as I do not like their looks.

I have bought bows with silencers zip tied and have had no problems.

Just a personal preference.

They are handy for a lot of uses but I wouldn't trust them as a nocking point.
