Title: archery chronograph app,99 cents
Post by: el greco on July 15, 2013, 11:26:00 PM
I bdownloaded this app on my Iphone about an hour ago and for my 65 pound Hatfield, which I pull 27" so that would be 62#,with 450 grain arrows I averaged 192!Now I have never put my bow through a proper chrono but I will try to do so soon and compare the results.

Cool. You say this app, where did you find it and is it available for androids?

Very cool! I'd love to hear how accurate it is.

HHHHHmmmmmm......     :saywhat:

Curious as to how a chronograph works from a phone.    :dunno:

You're using kind of a light arrow for that setup. Right at 7.26 grains per pound. Could be hard on your bow at that weight.

A link might be helpful for those who like to play around with speed checks.

Tell us more about it.

I tried one on my iPad a while back. It works based on sound.  I've never run an arrow through a real chrono, but I felt like my iPad readings were too high.

Your app might be new and improved. Let us know when you find out more.

I have a couple real chrono's - if you give me the ap name u can try it when I get back home and give accurate comparison. But I can't see how it would be accurate based on sound.

My Widow must be going 300 fps if it's based upon sound.  :D

I will post pictures and more details later because now I am taking a short brake from work. How the app works is this.
It gives you a field that you put a distance from target. I set mine yesterday exactly at 12 yards.
Then it gives you a field that you can put your arrow weight. That's optional and to calculate KE.
Then you have to place your phone somewhere between you and the target. I put mine last night on the ground.
Parenthesis here in order for the app to work you have to be in a relatively quiet environment . It doesn't have to be dead quiet but quiet .
Then you press the button for the countdown .you have the option for 10,15,or 20secs.
After the dude starts the countdown and gets to one I wait a second then release.
What it does it measures the time of the sound of release and the sound of impact . It gives you a number of speed in feet per second that's nowhere near the speed of your now but then fine tuning comes in place and that's where it's all at.
But more about that when I get home.
It sounds complicated but after you do it a couple times it becomes a piece of cake.

Sounds just like the one I used. That is what I meant by "based on sound"....Thanks for taking the time to explain  :)

Go to your App Store, type in "archery chronograph" and it will bring you to it.

Sounds just like the electronic timer used to measure trigger time between shots. Just giving it to you in feet per second. As long as the info you enter is accurate, I can't see any reason why it would not be quite accurate. Never cared how fast my bows were, but for 99 cents, what the heck, Just downloaded it myself. Thanks

Just downloaded it and shot my RER XR at 20 yards with a 9gpp arrow and it said 203, 202, 203, for three shots. I think it might give a little bit high readings although Ive never shot it through a real chrono.

I'm curious, how do you fine tune to get believable results?

Found it on iTunes and almost pressed Buy. Then I caught myself, asking, 'Do I really care? No, I'm shooting bows I love and shooting for accuracy. Speed's irrelevant. It's another gimmick.'

First of I am not a speed freak.Having said that I wouldn't mind if my bow was a few feet faster than my friends bows! Also somebody posted that I am shooting low gpp.I agree that 7.2 gpp is low but my Hatfield is quiet and can take the beating.
In the first pic is my frontyard. Is quieter than the backyard where my neighbours A/C compressor sounds like a truck and I am tempted to put an arrow through it every time I hear it coming to life.So first you need a QUIET place.
Second pic is the apps starting screen.Set the distance you are going to be shooting.Today I got the same results from 10 and 15 yards.Third pic is the results after the shot..As you can see the result is not near the truth as it says 234 feet
BUT..Here is when fine tuning comes in play.. more pics and explanation in a while.

Allright.Starting screen:set your distance.Use a measuring tape.Mine was 45 feet(15 yards) from the tip of my arrow when I pulled it at anchor to my  target. Then place your phone about 3-4 feet from where you are going to be shooting.I put mine on the ground. Then hit the 20 secs button, grab your bow while the dude is counting down, aim and release after the dude counts one.A side not here DON'T release too early. After he says one i count one-go and then release.
On the bottom of the third pic it says shot fired fine tuning(left side) and on the bottom right it says shot landed fine tuning.I don't know if you can see in the third pic two red vertical lines on the screen. Those are actually 2 red arrows.
This is where they got to go after fine tuning
 (http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u384/elgreco1981/DSCN2440_zps0e4deacb.jpg) (http://s1065.photobucket.com/user/elgreco1981/media/DSCN2440_zps0e4deacb.jpg.html)
NOW there is a small detail that can set you off many feet apart.look closer
 (http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u384/elgreco1981/DSCN2443_zps398508c6.jpg) (http://s1065.photobucket.com/user/elgreco1981/media/DSCN2443_zps398508c6.jpg.html)
the second arrow is exactly where it is supposed to be on shot landed.
the first one I moved it purposely more to the left than it is supposed to be just to show you.Basically the idea is that with fine tuning you have to allign the arrows with the high peaks of the soundwaves of shot fired and shot landed.
BUT notice how in the shot fired, which is the sound peak right from the first arrow, there are two ledges..can you see that the highest peak is a really thin line after the first ledge?YOU DON'T want it there.

Where the first arrow needs to go is just where that first ledge starts to appear after the flatline(which represents the quiet before you shoot).Hopefully somebody with an actual chrono will download the app and compare the results

Dave said he was gonna try it with his bow, since he and I chronoed ours at Tannehill. That ought to give is some comparable data.

It will be interesting to see results from someone who also has a chronograph.
