Hey Gang,
it's less than two months till elk season where I'll be hunting (Roosevelts in Washington and perhaps Rockies in ID). Man, I can't wait to get out there after them! How about you fellas? How many of you are hunting elk this year and where will you be hunting them?
Cheers, Matt
Going for my first time to Colorado! Still trying to get in shape and shoot as much as I can, but work keeps getting in the way! :) Camping next weekend to trial run the new tent. Looking forward to it.
Fourth trip to Colorado. Picking up the pace on my year round work outs, trying to decide on which bow, and still looking for the right pack. Unique opportunity to check out the area before the hunting trip. I never had that option before.

I am going for a job interview tomorrow and when I get the job I will be able to hunt elk pretty much in my back yard...I am going to focus on antlerless animals because there is a two month bow only season for them there...if a legal bull comes by I will just watch him and wave goodbye...not...I will shoot him right through both lungs...if he is a big tough old bruiser I will grind him up for sausage and burger and get my name in the record book...I am going to hunt with an interesting combo...a Dryad longbow at between 65 and 70 pounds shooting 2317 Grand Slams with 160 grain Thunderheads...I also use VPA broadheads but I like the way the Thunderheads shoot and the way they mate with the insert on the arrows...I really like the potential of being able to hunt every day for two months...of course that will probably mean I will shoot one on my first day out and have to sit out the rest of the season
DDave
I hope to get a "rematch" with the big ol' growler here in Oregon. If he didn't make it though the rifle season, predators, or the winter then maybe his sons will be there!
Wyoming in the Bighorns, will be a good elk hunt!
Colorado OTC this year for elk, but antelope is only a month away.
Lookin' for a partner.
homebru

Steve
Unit 52 New Mexico solo, second hunt.
Back to the Bighorns for the elusive chase.
Got a few spots I'm gonna check out..... see what turns up.
Should be some good stories with this many going. I plan to carry both a still camera and a video camera and document my hunt to the extent possible.
Hope others do the same and we have some great elk stories posted on here to keep us warm this winter!!
trying for my first elk this year. SW Alberta in the rocky mountains
we are, here at home, question for us, is, are we going to get to deer hunt, those tags are a little bit harder to get and have a place to hunt at the same time if we go for whitetail on the plains which is what we like to do for deer hunting! But we drew those too so we should have a great fall!
Heading out for my sixth Colorado DIY elk bowhunt Sept 5-16.
I will be in the CO wilderness the day before the season opens. Its where I go when I don't get drawn here.[AZ]

Everything else in life is secondary when Elk season arrives.... The only way my wife gets any attention is using elk urine behind her ears....

I will be, just waiting on left-over tags. Sometime in late July they will be posted and Aug. 6th for sale.
Colorado first two weeks this year.
Glenn
Im leaving for CO sept 12. Unit71
I'll be in Northwest Montana in late September. :bigsmyl:
First of many to come, I hope. Headed to Colorado September 20th.
I hope to here many great stories come October from you guys. I'm sitting this year out but will be back to Colorado next year.
I'm getting ready for elk here in MT like usual. Good luck to all you folks. Calling elk is number one and big time fun!
First time this year to south central CO. Bringing swap bow or one of my own, and training wheels, just in case. The appropriate ethical decision, I'll get those wheels off sometime.
No go for me again this year, all you lucky dogs make sure to share the pics and stories!
Snag, Leave old Growler alone, He's mine.
Like Kirk and Ron when elk season comes I am not a bowyer any longer. Elk Hunter is the name and elk is my game!!!! I can smell the fir, bask in the warmth of the sun and smell the smoke of a fire with a hot pot of coffee on it. More that all that I can anticipate that moment when it all comes together and see the flash of the arrow and hear the thump of a well placed shot./ A whirl and a death run.
Man I can almost taste the steak!!!!! :archer:
God bless you all, Steve
Looking forward to my first CO elk hunt. Ten days in early Sept. Hunting with an old friend. Will be the first time we have camped and hunted together since we were both teenagers, I'm now 58. Pat, I'll see you the first of Sept.
Scott
What Elksong said. Leaving Fri for a llama weekend and some recon. on a potential new area. The grass is always greener....
Final week of the Colorado season for me. The elk hunt is just a bonus as I get to share a week with my son who lives out there. Priceless!
Just booked a plane ticket this morning to spend the last week of archery season in southwest CO. Flying out with one friend, and will met up with another who is driving out with our gear a week earlier. A couple of other good friends will round out a great camp!
Now I am just watching the weather forecast daily and praying that they get some much needed rain to fill up the water tanks on the ranch.
If I was not already going to Wyoming at that time for elk, I would be all over this. Good luck finding a partner.
I am always seeing guys post that they want to hunt elk "someday". Overspined has an offer that you shouldn't pass up!
We arrived here in camp in SW Colorado a few days after Comptons. Looking forward to the seasons as I have elk, deer, and bear tags. Took a drive today and spotted a beautiful light cinnamon bear. Don't see many that color here. Hope to see him again around the first week in Sept.
I'll be in Idaho chasing elk in the early season and you'll find me in Utah squawking on a cow call during the late season.... and if memory and tradition serves me correctly eating tag soup sometime around February. I've got a real good recipe perfected over the years for tag soup and salad...
Been to Montana and Idaho once each, but haven't connected yet. Going on a DIY backpack hunt to SW Colorado this year with my brother. Leaving Sept 6, getting stoked!
How many years in a row does this make, Bill? You've made a mighty impressive and successful run of hunts...
Going into the Mt. Zirkel wilderness area in northern Colorado for the first week of elk season. Looking forward to revisiting the Colorado mountains. Plan to visit my son and his family in Colorado Springs prior to the hunt.
Hey Daryl, this is my 49th year to be in Colorado during the fall. The mountains are a second home to me. I was just born in the wrong state! :) Wish you were coming to join me again this year. Still hoping you can make it out .
Not for me this year. Hunting Kansas in Oct and Nov with my brother instead. Seems like a good trade to me. Although I do miss my elk hunting.
49 years, Bill! I think the state of Colorado should issue you a complimentary permit next year. :saywhat:
Elk, deer, and bear tags... Your game processor in Cortez is going to be a v-e-r-y busy gal!
Wish I could be there to see the stars and enjoy the fresh air and good company.
Good luck to all the elk hunters on this thread. There's no better animal to chase with a stick and string!!!
I'll be in the Uncompahgre National Forest for the 1st 3 weeks. Going on 12 years straight, what a great time! Going with 5 of my friends.
Montana for me. DIY south of Ennis.
I hunt them every day. In my mind... :smileystooges:
I'm sitting out this year, but have every intention of heading back out next year. Good luck to all of you!
I had to use my vacation for construction projects on my farm. No elk this year, going back in 2015 again though. I can't wait.
Good luck to everyone going this year.
Gil
