I've got an early 70's KMag that needs a new strikeplate. I've got the old one off and the new one is going to be a bit smaller. There is glue residue where the old one was.
Is it safe to use acetone to remove that glue? If not, what should I use?
Thanks
Usually it would be OK but you might try something less strong.Vegetable oil would be worth a try.I believe some have used WD40.I know Googone and Goofoff work.Clean any oil residue, off, from your cleaner, before installing the new one.
After you clean the old gunk off, wash the area well with soap and water, and then wipe it off with alcohol to get rid of any residual oil before applying the new material.
WD 40
acetone is really strong stuff.
Acetone softened the clear coat on my old kodiac.
Mineral spirits did not and cleaned the "gunk" right off.

WD 40
X2
If you have any charcoal lighter fluid around -- any brand will do, Kingsford, etc. -- that will take off the glue without damaging the finish. Wash the area with soap and water afterward to get rid of the oily residue from the fluid and you are good to go.
Thanks everyone!
WD-40 has always worked for me....
Yup - soak it in WD-40.
WD-40 or lighter fluid
Tell us how it went and what worked :)
Acetone is way to strong and could damage/soften the finish permanently. I suggest googone then prep with an alcohol wipe, then let it dry completely prior to applying any of the new pieces. To get the best adhesion be sure not to touch the surface or the adhesive back of the new pieces with your fingers as your fingers contain body oils that can compromise the adhesion. Once applied you should wait at least overnight (prefer 24 hours) for complete bonding. I also suggest applying a pressure to keep them in place. I normally tape them down with painters tape. Hope this helps.
Proprod hit the nail on the head! That's exactly the way I do it!

Anyone ever tried that "Goo-Gone" Stuff? It works Really Well on removing that Sticky Residue off of Everything else!! Just wondered, and might not be hard on the Finish either!!
I just wipe mine with alcohol and it seems to clean it up pretty good.
