Title: San Antonio hunting?
Post by: Griffon on September 01, 2007, 03:36:00 PM
Work is taking me from UK to San Antonio, TX for a couple of weeks from 15 September onwards.  I'm not familiar with the area, nor do I know whether the Bow season has started there yet.  Is there anybody out there who could advise me where to go.  I wouldn't be able to spend more than a couple of days hunting, nor would I be able to travel too far.  Thanks guys.

I think bow season opens Oct 1 down there, at least it used to. You don't just 'go hunting' in south Texas. It's quite involved to just find a place to hunt and can be expensive.

I lived in San Antonio for a number of years and was very fortunate to obtain permission to hunt property scheduled for development mostly on the northwest side of town. A right place at the right time kind of deal, I doubt I could repeat it.

Here's one of the bucks I killed down there.

Finding a place to hunt is much more difficult than finding deer to shoot in Bexar Co.

You can find some places by looking in the classified of the San Antonio Express News.  Its the only San Antonio paper.  Look in Section 3E of the classified titled Recreation.  You can also Google.  Hunting places in San Antonio, Tx.   Texas is about 90 percent privately owned.  So either you know some one that owns a ranch, you lease your hunting property, or you day hunt.  Won't be long before hunting will be only for the very rich.  Hunting in Texas is a huge billion dollar industry.  Google the King Ranch and check the hunting section.  Want to kill a 190 plus buck.  They got them there just shell out about $25,000 and it's yours.

LOok into Lake Amistad in Del Rio Texas, it is about 150 miles from of San Antonio and they have federal land to hunt on. Out of state small game hunting license i beleive is $40.00 and there is a $20.00 season hunting fee @ the park  will get you into Javelina,Mouflan, rabbits, dove and quail and a few Audad to hunt. There are a bunch of deer but the license is  more expensive

If you don't get to hunt, there is a game ranch for sight seeing nearby.

Get your check book out. That area has some of the most expensive hunting in Texas.

Best bet is probably talk to all your co-workers and tell them you would like to get some hunting in while you are there. You might be surprised. Not everyone hunts around here but just about everyone knows someone that does and most leases around here will let you take a guest, that and a lot folks have family that have land and maybe you can get on that way. Hunting is great here in Texas but like some of the others said you have to know someone or have a lease.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I must admit that I wasn't aware of the private / federal land issue in TX.  Looks like I had better start making friends..fast!  Judging by what I'm hearing, dayhunting pigs might be worth looking into, with the short amount of time I've got available. Rgds

Mike G is right -- year-round hog hunting.  I also agree that Littlefeather is your best bet, but if that doesn't work out, shoot me a pm -- I just got home from looking at hogs (walking sofas!) on a buddy's ranch.  Might be able to help.

Check this ranch out, Joel and Heidi are great people. Half hour out of San Antonio, good whitetail and turkey - pay for what you shoot and very reasonable - no fences.
