Title: Sharpening Tanto style B-Heads
Post by: krink on July 08, 2013, 12:22:00 AM
I am in the market for new broadheads and I am basing what I buy on how I can sharpen them.  I have the KME system (no diamond stones) and I can get a good edge with it.  My only problem is that I have tried to sharpen tanto style tip and have royally messed them up. They were Magnus buzz cuts and when I tried to sharpen the tip I could never keep the point inline with the body of the b-head, if that makes sense.  Also I dont know if I need to re-adjust the clamp to be inline with the tanto edge or keep it where it is at when I sharpen the main cutting edge.  When I sharpen my old style Bear razor backs I get hair poppin sharp.

The Braodheads I am looking at are the VPA penetrator 175s or the Magnus 150s.  I am leaning toward the VPAs as of right now but opinions change rather quickly!

I have been using the 175 Penetrators for a while...have not shot any game with them yet so no opinions in that regard...I find them to be extremely easy heads to sharpen...the tanto tips I just give a few light passes on a whetstone freehand watching the angles as best I can...if you have not held a Penetrator in your hand you need to do that before buying them...the small size of them may bother you compared to other heads..the thing I like best about them is that they fly like field points, and btw you can get screw in 175 field points that are made by PDP

As stated above I just free hand the tip. I take a lansky stone and lightly run it across. You always have the option with Stingers and Buzzcuts to buy new blades to.

Call Ron at KME. He'll tell you SNAP what to do to make it work! Period. Full Stop!

I never found a way to do it with the KME.For sure,it would at least take a different angle that the main blade.I usually do mine mounted in a piece of shaft, hand held,on a fine stone. It wouln't hurt to black the tanto bevel first.Go easy and alternate edges so as not to get the tip off center.
