Title: Came Across a Photo...
Post by: Dan Chamberlain on September 01, 2007, 08:46:00 AM
Of an Indian holding what appears to be a Penobscot style bow.  He's standing with a group of soldiers and Apache scouts in Arizona and the photo is dated 1885.

I'd heard of the Penobscot bows, but this is the first photo I've seen that shows one in use and in Arizona with the Apache no less!

I'll try to dupe it.  Hope "Shutterfly" works on this site.

In AZ? The Penobscots are a northern tribe/bow from the great lakes northward. Trade item maybe? Like an Apache with the first new compound ha ha. Interesting. Like to see the photo.

Here's the photo link.  I tried to post it but I'm an idiot.

At first, I thought the scout was holding an arrow in his support hand, but can't see any fletching or point on it.  Has to be a penobescot style bow.

Looks like a very 'posed' pic, maybe the photographer 'advised' the guy to hold some arrows too. Look at his release, Mediterranean style. Looks like arrows to me too.

Indians often held arrows like that while shooting, even riding horses.

Looks like arrows ,points or broadheads above hand and fletches below. but the arrow on the string seems to be longer than those on the bowhand.thats the way Philippine Aetas hold their bow and arrows.

After looking carefully, (didn't have my glasses on this morning) it does look like arrows in the support hand.  Bummer.

I know for an 99% certain fact that Apache archers held their arrows in the bow hand and with the flick of a finger could put another arrow into position to shooot so that they could loose 5 arrows in about 3 seconds. It was a trick they learned from the Lakota for getting 5 -6 arrows into a buffalo ASAP.Worked real well in battle too. Saw an Apache do it for tourists when I was a boy when we went to see the Grand Canyon. I remember my father was so impressed he put paper money(I don't know the amount) into the hat where others were putting change. That looks like he is holding the arrows like he had always practiced for.

Glenn St. Charles often held his 'insurance' arrow in his bow hand when shooting at an animal.

Still a neat pic, though. That's a pretty short longbow. Can't be one of the new Sheepeaters...
