Just back from a terrific trip to South Africa. I had several bowhunters join me who contacted me through Tradgang.
I finally got a Giraffe, after years of trying for an OLD bull. One arrow and he was down in 80 yards. Kudu, Eland, Warthog, Waterbuck, Baboons, Impala, and other stuff. Took my 14 year old grandson on his first ever bowhunt and he scored a Baboon and a Guinea fowl with his wee recurve (Morrison, of course).
I'm not a booking agent, but I bring bowhunters over. I have two hunts held for next year, both 14 day hunts at Greater Kuduland. If any of you are interested, email me at misseskudu@earthlink.net
It's still great there, but things are changing in South Africa (NONE for the better!). Land confiscation by the government and other stuff makes me think if you want to bowhunt there you should do it in the next few years!
When you are a dwarf you find that a bull Giraffe's head is taller than your body!
Too Short
Congrats...How about some pix bud?
My grandson will be here today. He is HIGH tech and I'll see if he can figure out how to post some pictures.
Too Short and too low tech!
Cool Paul, if need be,just e mail them to me and i'll get them posted for you.
Come on Paul, ya gotta give us the low down on the giraffe. I gotta be honest, I'm not sure if I would ever want to shoot one, but I'm interested in hearing the story. Sounds like you had yet another great hunt over there.
Congrats. cant wait to see the pics
How do you get a broadside shot on a giraffe? :knothead: Underside might be the proper term for a shot at a giraffe. :bigsmyl: Some pics please.Thanks.
Gil
Sent ya an email Paul.
Danny
African bowhunt with your grandson!!!!!!
You know you`ve done something right in your life if you can say that. Many happy returns to you and your grandson.
I'll email the photos to you later today, Guru. My grandson will down load some of his into my computer and then I'll send them along.
Danny...just answered you.
The shot on a Giraffe is really weird, because their lungs are WAY higher than any other animal. You go from the crease, where the neck meets the body, straight back until you can see you will clear the shoulder blade. My outfitter had explained it really well with photos.
The Giraffe drank facing me and slowly turned to leave. I had to drop to my knees in the blind to be able to shoot high enough. I was shooting my 74 pound Morrison and one of my 960 grain Buffalo arrows with the Magnus 125 grain. I drilled him right where I had been told and it looked like someone opened a fire hydrant when the arrow hit. 80 yards and he was down. He even had the decency to fall on the off side and I retrieved my arrow!
Their skins are over 2" thick! A heavy bow and heavy arrow are a must. Soon I will have one of the most beautiful rugs imaginable.
Pictures will follow.
Too Short
WOW! How Cool Is That! You Are My hero Paul! ;) A guy I could look up to.
... mike ... aka waysiah or W.A.Y.S.I.A.H. :D
"Waysiah" is a Mohawk name. Means ~ "Why Are You Standing In A Hole?"
I heard these animals are really hard to kill and that you have to hit between ribs to be successful. But according to you, it can be done pretty well with a 74# longbow and heavy arrows. What about penetration?
Can't wait to see trophy pictures!
Congrats Paul. Sounds like a fun trip.
Dennis
Paul:
Arrows by who?????
Bob
I am going for impala next summer, we will be camping out in tents in the bush, cant wait to take an impala with a bow!, your trip sounds great, I have always wanted to go
Ian:
I sure hope your going for more than Impala, or that will be one expensive Impala.
Bob
mabey a wharthog too, see my dad and I were invited by friends who live there, they are the guides and all I have to pay for are flights and trophy fees, so we dont have to pay for guides, lodging, meals, trackers, and all those other cost on an regular safari
forgot to mention, the guys who are our friends in africa supply my dad with the exotic horn and bone for knife handles
Glad you had a good trip Paul, now this winter you can start to work on all those nice osage staves.
Mike
THANK YOU PAUL!!! I gotta say that was the most amazing trip I've ever had! If any of you guys/gals are considering the possibility of such a hunt, you can't do better than what Paul is offering. Greater Kuduland Safari's 75,000 acres of wild Africa is specifically outfitted for bowhunters. Aside from the Paul Brunner designed waterhole/blind combo's there are also a few treestands that Paul put up. You will see game that only dreams can exceed - Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Giraffe, Wildebeest, Gemsbok, Kudu, Impala, Eland (huge!), cheetah, warthog, baboon and many more. Better yet, an awesome group of people to share the hunt with.
My wife, daughter and I went to Greater Kuduland last July for two weeks of awesome adventure. As soon as we returned, we began thinking about when we will return.
We're sorry we missed meeting Paul, but needless to say, there were plenty of "Too Short Stories" passing around the campfire.
You asked two questions...
Bob Burton of Whispering Wind made the shafts for me. They are diamond wood and with dip, feathers, and 125 grain Magnus, they weigh 960 grains. These are the arrows I used to take two Water Buffalo and one Cape Buffalo.
Penetration was all the way to the far rib cage, where the arrow finally stopped. Since I was shooting UP at a steep angle, I got about 20 inches of penetration. These old bulls stand about 18 feet tall at the top of the head.
Too Short
Welcome home Paul. What do you have lined up for this fall? I have to make it to Africa with you....
An 18 foot tall giraffe versus a 3' 10" midget with a stick. Now there's a fair contest. Why don't you pick on animals your own size? May I suggest a dik-dik next time? Where are you going to put a giraffe rug in your motor home????
LMAOROF!!! Gene you're killing me. here we go again with round 2 or was it 200.
Wensel vs. too short...
I cant wait for the response :biglaugh:
Gene, It won't be a rug, it'll be one of those car covers for the entire motorhome!Paul said he had to get on his knees to shoot up to that thing. How short is his bow?
Gene, the Giraffe rug isn't for the inside. He's putting it on the outside so it looks cool when he's driving. The set-up comes with a fuzzy hat and big sunglasses. LOL!
:bigsmyl:
Ooopps! Guess I should read what Marty says before I post. CK
Pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics,pics!!!!
We may need to break out the snacks for this.
well were waiting :coffee: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:
Good point Marty. His lower limb HAS to be very short, even if he was aiming it toward the heavens! Can you imagine the dwarf shooting from his knees? The giraffe probably thought he was a dung beetle.
Go to bed Gene . . .
Gene, 12:36 am? Either Donna's still out of town or your just so excited to come hog huntin next week, you can't sleep!
I'd love to see Paul's video of killing that giraffe, especially the end. Tiiiimber!!
Reverse cant! :D

Curtis that photo must have been after the shot when he was hiding behind that dung just after yelling timber as Gene says. it that his bow and quiver laying on the ground?
What is it that short guys have against giraffe's????????????
Can you find Too Short in this picture?

One of the Short Crews; Paul, Johann, Kiwi and me. Johann had to squat down to stay in the picture:

I can see it now; a giraffe landau roof on the Silverado HD, and Paul cruising the street, blasting out "Lowrider" on the stereo.
Do you have any idea how badly coffee HURTS when it is ejected out your nose?????
Dung beetle.... ouch!
Gene...
At least I can see my HYDRAULICS! Rumor has it you haven't seen yours in over 30 years!
Short is beautiful, useful, pleasant, sexy, and the envy of everyone tall.
Steve...2009. You better do it before you're too old!
Too F. Short
Not even a e-mail
Hang on, Bob...
My grandson did all the photo down loads and I can't find a bunch of them. Your magic bow took 9 more critters and when I can find the @#$%^^#$ photos in my files, I'll email you.
You are STILL the best bowyer on earth, fear not!
AND...I am STILL your HERO!
Too Short and Too Humble!
Gene...
The Guy from Boston is hysterical. How do you find this stuff?
www.theguyfromboston.com (http://www.theguyfromboston.com) Check that out. Only Wensel could come up with this stuff.
Too Short
Dwarf,
The Guy From Boston will quickly become your hero.
You've been using that line about my hydraulics for over a decade now. Can't you come up with anything new? I can see mine anytime I want. Thats why God made mirrors. I question why you are always looking at yourself anyway. At least I didn't quit growing at age ten.
You'll be happy to know, Gene, that I finally reached the pinacle of success in all I have wanted in my life!
The other day, Karen accused me of behaving like an eight year old. YES! YES! YES!
All the other lines I would like to use to describe you are not allowed in this web site. Hugs and kisses, big guy!
Too F. Short
That explains it. You obviously quit growing at eight years old.
For those interested, I'd like to tell the story of the first time I met Paul Brunner. In 1972 I was driving in downtown Missoula, Montana. As I pulled up to a traffic light, I looked out the side window at a foxy chick in a tank top. I thought I was stopped but I rolled ahead, hitting the bumper of the car in front of me. The door opened up and out jumped a dwarf. The little guy waddled back as I rolled down my window. He yelled at me, "I AM NOT HAPPY..."
I politely said, "Well, which one are you then?"
And the Eighth Dwarf was born that day....
Way to go Paul.
You planning on any new videos? I'd love one of your buffalo hunts. I don't watch many hunting videos, but I sure enjoyed "Street Smart". The segment on your snake catching was appreciated too.
