Finally got everything all settled today. I have two 58" Toelke Chinooks, both 51@28, and I draw about 29". SBD 8 strands on both. Have a Kentucky cow elk tag and 10 days off in October.
1. 2 piece bow will shoot 30" bop 80-85 Surewood Douglas Fir with Kustom King Trailmakers weighted to 145 with melted lead. 660 gr. @150 fps.
2. 1 piece bow will shoot 30.5" ICS bowhunter 340 with 100 grain insert and 200gr. VPA 3 blade, also footed with 1" of 2117. 630gr. @low 150s.
Anyone see anything I need to change? What is everyone else using?
Jeez, you've got some bulldozers there! Get close, bro, and happy hunting!
I will be hunting the Missouri River breaks for the 9th year. Cari bow woverine 62#@28.5" carbon express arrows with magnus heads finished arrow is 832gr. 13.4 GPP with 20% FOC. I use this set up for deer, bear, elk and birds.
Just put one where it counts, your setups are substantial!
Your set up is very similar to mine 2 ACS CX 50@28 3 pc bows, sdb 8 strand and fir arrows with Abowyer BH's.
Tapered dug fir with 160 grain VPA up front. 620 grain total arrow weight out of a 59# 2 piece longbow. I use this set up for everything. I do not believe in switching back and forth between set ups for different game.
55lb Maddog Prairie Predator . I think I will go with my surewoods w/ a 145gr tusker single bevel up front. Total weight just under 600grs.
Or I could use my 56lb Rocky Mtn Recurve w/ Maddog limbs. 2020 xx75 w/ 225grs up front for a 630gr arrow. This is the set up I'm taking to Africa in August.
Decisions, decisions......
Everyone has their own comfort level with their killer elk set up... it don't really matter much what other folks are using ..... As long as you can shoot em straight, those arrows will get er done no problem!
Good sharp broadheads brutha...
Just found out there is going to be an archery elk season close to home for me this year...these are farmland elk so no climbing needed...I am working myself into a Dryad longbow that will be very close to 70 pounds in draw weight...I am still trying to decide what broadhead to use but my default will be some 200 grain VPA Penetrators on the end of 31.5 inches of Super Slam 2317's for a total arrow weight of 700 grains...I get great flight out of those arrows and I shoot that bow well...just love the simplicity of a longbow for that type of hunting...I was just thinking today that those arrows run 10 to the pound...just scaled the bow and it weighs 19 ounces with the string or roughly the weight of a dozen arrows with broadheads...btw I am not using that much bow weight or arrow weight because I think I need it...only because I can

60" Takedown LB 54# 588gn carbon tipped with Abowyer Wapiti heads. If all works out, this will be my first elk hunt! Can't wait!!

My rig will do the job just fine; I just need an elk to cooperate to prove the point.
I'll be using a 54# Thunderhorn Heart Stopper 2018 aluminum arrows with 150 grain stingers this year. If I do my part!

If it aint broke dont fix it. I`ll use my Bigriver 53# t/d longbow again, beman MFX classics with stinger 4 blade 150`s. Pass thru arrow went ten more yards in the dirt.
You should be gtg with your setup.
I'll be using Bob Lee Takedown. 52#@28. 2018's full length with 175 VPA 3-blade. (Will have 53# longbow limbs for backup)
Centaur Chimera 53# shooting either 2216's with the 175gr Abowyer heads or GT 55/75 with Big Game Heads.
I am going to be using the 160 grain Thunderheads...they just match up a bit better with the 2317...660 grains is right at Dr. Ashby's ideal weight...there is no such thing as overkill for elk
