Title: Need OTC or zero pt Drop Camp Recommendation
Post by: blackpenny on July 03, 2013, 01:13:00 PM
Looking to book a 2014 elk hunt ASAP and DIY is gonna be tough since I may not be able to scout beforehand.  I have 2 drop camps on my list but waiting to hear what others can ad. I'm in decent shape (currently training for a Spartan Race) and plan on being in top physical condition for the hunt. I will shoot the first cow, bull or mule deer I see according to unit rules.  Anyone?

Colorado is the way to go when it comes to OTC. I'm currently setting one up there for my step father and myself. Lots's of land and lots of elk. Oregon is also has great OTC elk hunting.

Yes, I have CO in mind, but need a reputable outfitter drop camp recommendation.

Angel,  You need to do some research on the Colorado GMU (game management units) that you want to hunt and then start calling the outfitters in those areas.  Colorado has great resources that detail the past herd size as well as hunter success rates in individual GMUs.  That will at least get you started.  Spend a few hours on the phone with prospective outfitters and you will soon have your answer.  It's not necessarily an easy process but the rewards are worth it.

Pete, I've done all that research already but can't yet commit to an outfitter. I want to hear from people on this site who have used an elk outfitter they are happy with.

I've hunted a few times with Winterhawk Outfitters... Larry and Laura Amos. They are straight shooters and offer some nice options. I hunted with them in the flattops wilderness... I believe unit 25?? It's been several years ago.

Good luck!

My buddy  Will Jimeno will be there for archery as well. He took a real nice P&Y antelope with them 2 years ago. Fred left me a message yesterday, we keep playing phone tag but I will most likely book a drop camp hunt with him.
