Hi folks,
I am looking for some suggestions for a short quote that could be hunting related but could also just be life related. Can be inspirational but I am not looking for anything overtly religious for this particular purpose. This quote will be displayed in a room I have remodeled in my basement. So give me your best quotes whether they be hunting related or otherwise. Thanks!
Dan
Dan, man am I glad you asked... I've been meaning to update my signature for a while but kept forgetting.
I'm a proud right wing whacko BTW but I love JFK's quote below and recite it to my boys often.
Ron
Someone on here (sorry, old memory can't cite reference) said "You can't hit what you're trying NOT to miss!"
I personally love that one in anything to do with shooting!
On life, I like Ron's quote.
Mining the many "signatures" on people's posts, like Ron's, might give you a lot of choices!
I have always liked
"Poor is the man who's life is filled with nothing but things"
The history of the bow and arrow is the history of mankind.

I have so many. Here are just a few...
The man that says "I can", and the man that says "I can't" are both correct...self quote
Life is like a giant "Crap" sandwich. The more bread you have, the less crap you have to eat...self quote
2 rules to a great meal...1-Something has to die, and 2-just spicy enough to make the back of your head wet...Friend's quote
Salad...that's what "Food" eats...self quote
It will stop hurting when the pain goes away...my Drill Sargent
Aim small and you'll miss small.
Life is to short to shoot ugly arrows...self quote
You can't drink all day if you don't start first thing in the morning...self quote back when I drank years ago.
If you want to be happy the rest of your life, make a woman who understands hunting your wife...self quote
Your success is equivalent to the amount of your effort...friend's quote
Something I try and relay to everyone that enters my man cave.
On these walls you simply see trophies...I see the culmination from hours of preparation and hard work that gave me an experience afield from a day I'll never forget!
Or one of my favorites.
"No such thing as luck. Luck is a moment in time where preparation meets opportunity."
Great thread, this should be a good one for years to come that many of us will benefit from.
From Witchery of Archery:
So long as the new moon returns in Heaven a bent, beautiful bow, so long will the fascination of archery keep hold of the hearts of men.
From an old Ray Stevens song - "There is none so blind as he who will not see."
From John Wayne - "Life is tough. It's tougher if you're stupid"
From John Wayne - "Talk low, talk slow, and don't talk too much." (Wish I could do better on this one in my life.)
From Dan Quillian - "Don't fall in love with your arrows. You ain't gonna have them that long." (after seeing me stressing over shooting an arrow into the grass while testing out one of his bows))
From my dad - "If a man's word is no good, the man is no good."
The more stuff I have, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!
There ain't a horse that can't be rode,
And there ain't a cowboy that ain't been throwed.
My dads quote, take the cotton out of your ears and stick it in your mouth and listen!!
JMG, when my dad used that quote, he didn't refer to cotton.
QuoteEver since I came into this world the force that has guided me seems to have been the urge to Go and See.

The idea of re-living his life if it were possible has occurred to almost everyone, I am sure. My own has been enjoyable, thrilling, frightening, and many times one false move would have caused sudden death, but I would not change my path if I had it to travel again, except I would perhaps spend even more time with nature than I have done. All over the world there are some who will understand, while others cannot.

"Work at something until it becomes EASY. Then work harder until it becomes SIMPLE. Then work harder until it becomes SECOND NATURE"
Being an ER nurse, one of my personal favorites: lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.
Another that I often tell other staff on those days that I happen to be in charge: If you have issues that need to be settled, close the door behind you. What I don't see, I can't testify to in a court of law (this applies to issues with other staff and unruly patients / family members).
Sorry posted twice

Thanks for the suggestions folks keep um coming!
How about taking off with " Life is too short to ... ???
I saw the suggested finish of "shoot ugly bows", who has some others?
Luck may save a man, if his courage holds
Life is too short to worry with your final chapter. You should try to write as many as you can before the end nears. The final chapter will write itself. If you believe in hell, worry with the epilogue.

Its reference is to taking on any high stakes situation and totally dominating it. It ties back to the passengers who fought back to retake their planes that day.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. I really liked this one that was posted a while back.
"The Bow Hunters Prayer
Lord, grant me just one more day
to watch the birds and squirrels play
To feel the sunshine on my face
To be alone in open space
To feel the string upon my hand
To see the gobblers strut tails fanned
To watch the rain beads on my bow
To find a deer trail in the snow
To sit and marvel at your world
To hear your plans for me unfurled
For I'm not out there to seek man's fame
Or to somehow boast upon my name.
I am out here for the love of you
And the simple wonders that you do.
For a tired old hunter like myself
Who doesn't dream of power of wealth
Who humbly asks on bended knee
For a whitetail buck to pass my tree
And for some wisdom from above
To show lost sinners of your love
So that they too can come to see
All the gifts you've given me
And when the bow is drawn back last
And my final arrow is cast
Let your warmth and mercy be shown
To thy bow hunting servant at your throne."

Too long for the wall, but worth sharing nonetheless:
The way to hunt is for as long as you live against as long as there is such and such an animal; just as the way to paint is as long as there is you and colors and canvas, and to write as long as you can live and there is pencil and paper or ink or any machine to do it with, or anything you care to write about, and you feel a fool, and you are a fool, to do it any other way.
- Ernest Hemingway
"Green Hills of Africa"
I thin Fred Bear said this, but not sure.
"you can get awfully hungry hunting with a bow and arrow" and not sure I have it worded exactly, but you get the idea.
Self quote: "Were you born stupid or have you always been that way?", not really enlightening or archery related, but helped me get the point across many times in my Naval Career.

Life is too short to drink cheap liquor.
Life is too short to hang out with slouchy women.
It's at the bottom of every one of my posts. It relates to life, and especially hunting with traditional bows and arrows.
when injustice becomes law resistance becomes duty
read a good one today by Mark Twain: "The two most important days in a persons life are the day they are born and the day they find out why they were born"
Possibly life's greatest concealed treasure is peace of mind. Peace of mind will forever remain at arm's length without peace of spirit. Peace of mind and peace of spirit may be one in the same.
