Can I use minwax to stain my wood arrow shafts? Should I use a clear finish for them afterwards to protect them? Thanks!
I use the little yellow can of minwax stain and gloss wipe on poly.
I used to mix the stain and the poly to make it a one step process.
Great finish. Just takes "forever" ;) to dry.
here is how i make my arrows i stain them with a wood stain then when that is dried i spray them with polyurethane 2 coats then sand and two more coats. there ya go
I use waterbased Minwax stain. I go to Home Depot and have them mix a large can to whichever color I desire. I'm going to use "Verdigris" (kind of a forest green) for my next batch of arrows. I seal them with several coats of wipe on polyurethane.
What about the oil based stain?
I use the oil base stuff from minwax, no problems except my fingers when I am done, I like the red oak stain for a color, then either polyurethane spray gloss or wipe on poly, I usually wipe the stain on heavy then wipe it off with a dryer rag and hang them overnight. They dont take long to dry in this 108 degree weather we are getting here right now.
The Minwax oil base stains work great. Don't let it sit on the wood too long or the excess is hard to wipe off. Let it dry overnight and wipe again, I like 1/0 steel wool. The Minwax oil base poly gloss makes a great finish, you can wipe or brush it on straight from the can. I like 3 thin coats.
Does fletchtite work well with the polyurethane?
No, use Duco or Fletchtape. I also recommend MinWax stains and oil-based poly.

It takes a brave man to shoot forest green arrows. I have a hard enough time finding fluorescent pink with bright green fletching. I can't imagine how long it would take me to find one of yours.
Thanks guys for your help!
Try putting on wraps, then you won't have to worry about feathers coming off. They stay on great with wraps.

for those risky shots set an arrow up with a trailer line,,, bright colored yarn or survey string attached to the nock, then droop the tag end over the shelf under the arrow and when you draw back the line comes back nice with the arrow shaft on top of it yet stays on the shelf,, no effect to the flight for me..... 90% of the time that bright colored string will be sticking out of the ground where the arrow went in..
