Hello all. I'm shooting a longer bow than I normally do. Looking to get a tip protector and am wondering if there is any concensus as to which one is best. As I look @ them I see that one of several differences is the material they are constructed of. Suggestions?
Thanks.
I buy baby bottle nipples, cut off and use the very tip. They fit well and I get 4 for 5.00.

Thanks. Longbow or recurve? Mine is a longbow.

Thanks, I never heard that one.
They work well on both.
I like to make my own out of leather. The plastic or rubber ones can trap moisture against your bow and cause long term problems if it can't dry. If the leather ones get wet, they will dry without trapping moisture against the bow.......and the leather ones can look really nice :-)
They have some 5 packs at RMS.com for maybe $5. Works grate and they are cheap enough to put on all your bows.
I use a small section of surgical tubing. Doesn't trap water
For me -A binky....more durable than a bottle nipple.

If you get moisture in them, they're very easy to remove.
This is what I use on my recurve or longbow.
You get 5 for $3.00 and you still can take your string off with out taking them off.

Do you sell the Saunders, Tim?
Thanks.
Shoe leather is good and available just about everywhere you go. Avoid the rubber tip protectors and if you do use one take it off when the bow is not in use. They collect moisture, dirt and stuff that is hard on the finish and string. Years ago, my Bear Kodiak, delaminate because I left it on too long.
I use the Saunders also. But I have never had any issues with moisture, but then again I'm always messing around with my bows.
Craig has the answer! There the best and not having to take them off to get the string off is great.
Everyone has their likes BUT be careful with rubber on the end of your bow. Moisture!!!! and wood do not mix. Leather protectors are easy to make.
I looked at a like new 60's grizzly. The guy wrapped the bottom tip with electrical tape to keep the string on. I took the tape off before buying the bow and the tip overlay was gone.
Or the tip overlay was gone, so the guy wrapped it with electrical tape - in that order?

I like the black rubber ones like sold by black widow. Can't stand those old three inch monsters.
been using pacifier nipples for years with no problems. One last all season.
Guess I should have looked up the correct spelling of the word I wanted to use, the tip was deteriorating and I referred to it as gone. It was not completely missing. As I wrote, the bow was in "like new" condition. When I questioned him about the tape he said he put it on the bow when he bought it to keep the string on. The bow also had the original Bear string. I do kick myself for not making an offer on the bow and just replacing the deteriorating tip.
He also had two like new Bear cubs, without the tape on the bow tips and I bought them and a dozen microflite arrows.
Due to the shape of my bottom limb tip on my new Abbott my store bought protector flew off to parts unknown. I had to wrap ugly black tape around it until I could get to a shoot to buy another one.
If there's one thing my kitchen has a surplus of it's baby bottle nipples. I have two 1yr old grandaughters who are here more than at their own homes. Well, after reading this thread I swiped a nipple and snipped it to size. Fantastic!
I've been shooting traditional bows for over 25 years and I can't believe I never heard of nipples and binkys being used as tip protectors.
Thanks guys!
Leather products are easy to make...they are also noisy as heck if they don't fit correctly. Getting one to fit "like a glove" is the key, but also a major pain in the backside sometimes. I definitely prefer the way leather looks, but sometimes just don't feel like going to the trouble of customizing. Just food for thought...
Baby Bottle Nipples.... New One on Me! Great Idea  though, I bet my Daughter has some somewhere I can scam her out of!! :goldtooth:
