Title: What Brand Feathers Do You Prefer??
Post by: Nala on June 21, 2013, 03:23:00 PM
Hey all,

Gonna be buying some feathers soon so I thought I'd ask and see which brand you all like best.  I have always used TrueFlight and found the spine on their product to be thinner and more uniform that the Gateway feathers.

How are the AMG feathers?

I use 4 inch SHIELD CUT feathers.  I'd like to try the AMG feathers as their solid colors look really VIVID and BRIGHT.  Their FLO YELLOW and PINK feathers look incredible.  The problem is that I can't find anyone that carries 4 inch SHIELD CUT feathers from AMG.  Looks like they don't even make them.  Can't find a website for the company that makes them.
Does anyone know if AMG makes 4 inch Shield Cut feathers?

Are there places that I could send FULL LENGTH feathers and get them chopped in 4 inch shield cut...or maybe another shape if I desired?  If so, what would a service like that cost me?

Which brand of feather have you all found to be the BRIGHTEST?  If anyone has pics that compare the brightness of the brands, that would be really great to see.

So...what feathers do you all prefer to use?

Thanks for the time.

I have  to admit I am not brand loyal with feathers. I like the Tru-Flite  because of the quality. I like Gateway's Flo yellow for brightness. I use AMG full length because of cost when doing splicing. But to answer your question on brightness The Gateway Flo yellow feathers and Onestringer cap wraps to match plus a Flo green nock is visible for me even in low light conditions.

The best fletching Ive ever had were real turkey & goose feathers from Matt Gundock (aka Magnus here on tradgang). He can cut/burn any length and shape you'd want. He has also developed a formula to dye turkey in bright pink.

Natural fletching will outlast any commercial feather. The barbels are stronger & the feathers retain a lot of their natural oils meaning they last & resist weather better. Nothing on Earth can beat goose fletching when its damp, raining, or snowing. You can see the water bead off them. That being said...

I have some AMG feathers in bright pink. Ive not had any issues with them. The color is good.  I view feathers as disposable so if I have to replace some it doesnt bother me all that much.

Hope that helped you out.

I use AMG because they are bright and offer good visibility. I like the quality of the feather also. It's the only feather I shoot now, Trueflight has gotten too pricey.

You can't beat the price for Sagittarius feathers.
I would only buy there solid colors. You can buy 200 feathers for the price of the rest of them.

I will say for me if cost is no option for bright feathers I would get Trueflight, but I am on a budget so I use AMG.  I am happy with the AMG.  I have seen 4" shields I believe at one time, but have not seen them for a while.  I shot 4x4 parabolic.

I do want to try the Sagittarius feathers sometime, but have not found anything to show the colors.

Give them a call they will send you some samples.

AMG and Sagittarius don't make 4 inch Sheild cut.  I don't know if Gateway still does either.

I may have to stay with TrueFlight.

How much would it cost to have feathers cut in a 4 inch shield if I had to send them to someone that could do it?  Just a guess is good enough for now.

Thanks all.

A chopper is less then 30 bucks and you can get two 4" feathers from most full length feathers.  Seems like a no brainer to me.

I didn't know they were that inexpensive, plus I have never used one before.

Don't you have to bend a wire in the shape you want to cut them?  Is that the kind of CHOPPER you are talking about?

Thanks

Magnus by far.  Best service and the best quality IMO.

By brand, do you mean "chasing geese around the park with a stick?"

Either that or Hobby Lobby.  I would have to actually make money to afford to buy feathers like that.  One of these days, maybe.

I use turkey feathers cut primarily in a low pro nanner from Magnus for almost all of my personal arrows.

In commercial feathers, I believe 4" shield Bear Paws are still available from Kustom King....very good quality at a great price.

Nala, A chopper has a blade the size and shape of the feather and you simply lay the feather in the chopper and push down to chop out the feather. Very simple to use. The device you mentioned is a feather burner.Hope that helps. I have a 5" shield chopper I use to cut my own wild turkey feathers.

I tend to use Trueflight, Gateway, and Sagittarius feathers.
Trueflight has the best barr feathers.
Gateway has the camo feathers for a different look.
Sagittarius has the best prices on solid colors.
I buy all my feathers full length and chop what I need. I prefer to chop Gateway and Sagittarius because the way the bases are ground gives me a better cut.
As far as price, Sagittarius leads the flock.

for every day shooting and hunting arrows I prefer now the Bear Paw fletching...cheaper and every bit as good as trueflight in my opinion.  For the real deal I get my natural barred feathers from Magnus....fletched a dozen this past month and they were exceptional.

I must be missing something....

I am trying to find info on these MAGNUS feathers and can't find a thing.  I went to the MAGNUS web page and there isn't a thing on there about feathers, only broadheads.

Checked a search engine and nothing came up.

What's the deal with these feathers?

I only use Trueflight but that is only because that is what I started with a long time ago.  Back when they were a lot less expensive I bought four hundred full lengths and I still have some left.

I use a chopper as well.  I use a rubber mallet to activate the "chop".  Works for me.  5in shield cut.

Real turkey feathers sent to Magnus. He ground and treated some for me last year and they are a cut above any other commercially available feathers. The bases and cuts were noticeably better than Trueflight.

Nala go to the sponsor classifieds and you will find him there and type him an e-mail. Magnus is his avatar that's why you came up with broadheads. His real name is Matt Gundock.

The wire device you are thinking of is probably the Young Feather Burner.  Mine cost me ninety bucks a few years back.  All the major trad suppliers stock them.

The chopper is less expensive and is the best choice in the long run >IF< it is your intent to use one length and profile of feather exclusively.

I like 5 1/2 and 6 inch feathers and burn them to the desired profile.  Profile and length are easy to change and the left over piece can be used for other arrows such as the ones I make for the grand kids.

But, once again, if you will use one length and one profile the chopper is the best way to go.

I've used Gateway and Trueflite for years. Seem to work fine. Perhaps I'll look into the others.

I use nothing but Trueflite, really don't like the base on the Gateways, they are really wide ranging on thickness and width. I also like the AMG. I got some from Magnus and they were really great!
