Title: Production Bows... Shooting 3under???
Post by: woodchucker on June 19, 2013, 09:40:00 AM
There are alot of TradGangers out there shooting old factory made "Production Bows" from the 50's 60's 70's etc. Old Bears, Pearsons, Howatts, Wings, Brownings, Shakspears... The list goes on!!! The most popular shooting "style" was split-finger, and bows were tillered accordingly... I remember when shooting 3under was called "Apache style" and can only remember seeing one man shooting that way when I was a kid.

Today, we have more shooters than ever shooting 3under. (myself included for the last 10-12 years, and I've taught both my boys to shoot that way.) I was wondering how many out there are shooting old production bows 3under??? Any "Old Timers" (like myself)that have been shooting 3under for 30+ years... PLEASE chime in!!! The basic "fix all" for the tillering differance is "raise your nocking point" about 5/8" seems to be about the norm... For the "Old Timers" Did you know about/do this years ago??? I have all my & my boys bows both production & custom set-up with a 5/8" high nocking point, as all bows are tillered for split finger. I get near perfect (as good as I/we can shoot) arrow flight out of all of our bows. The problem is noise!!! I can never get a bow to shoot as quietly 3under, as I do split-finger, no matter what I try or do!!!!! For the "old ones" did you ever notice this back when???

Not looking to start a big depate... Just throwing some things out there. Food for thought, comments, etc.....

I shoot 3 under also.  You can tune any bow to shoot well 3 under, but they'll shoot better IMO with an elevated rest like a Bear WeatherRest.

I have a Bear rest on both my 70's Grizzly and (gasp) my '64 Kodiak.

Back when I was a pup [long ago], the only folks who shot 3 under were the very serious target archers. They practiced gap shooting and did so very well. Most did so in Field Archery events and shot out to 80 yards......heck I can't even see 80 yards now....lol!

For argument sake...lower your nock point to ground zero. Start shooting and adjust if needed.

I shoot 3-under and I have an old Browning Wasp. I mostly bowfish with it but I have it tuned to shoot the same hunting arrows as I use with my Kanati. I have string silencers on it and I don't notice it being loud upon release. I have my nocking point relatively high at about 3/4" I believe. I would agree with Braveheart about the elevated rest thing if I were having problems with noise. I have often thought about using one of those raised "feather" type rests that sit up kinda high on the shelf but I never had to try that so I haven't.

Looks to me like a raised rest plus a high nocking point should eliminate the noise  of an unnaturally loud bow shot with a 3-under release since the bow would be drawn closer to the same point on the string as a bow being shot with the split finger style of release.   :dunno:

As Joe Skipp stated before... I discussed this with him many years ago, and like he suggested, I started at "ground zero" and worked my way up. With my old Kodiak Mag, I had lots of noise, and my arrows were porpousing very badly! I worked my way up alittle at a time and things got better! At about 5/8" above center, arrow flight was near perfect, and just a "thump" upon release for noise.

When I had my custom bows built, I had Ed Mikuta tiller them for split finger. (just in case I wanted to change back) Ed agreed, just raising my nock point to shoot 3under would not be a problem.

I have switched back and forth over the years, and I do notice a definate noise differance between split and 3under. My bows are not NOISEY!!! However, with either rubber whiskers or yarnballs, there is definately a "thump" upon release!!! When I drop my nock point and shoot splitfinger, my pows are almost completely silent!

I imagine the noise is probly hardly noticeable, and I imagine my high shield fletching makes as much or more noise as far as game is concerned.....

I've always been a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it, kinda guy" However... Some of the threads about carbon arrows, FOC, Bareshafting, etc. Have got me thinking???

Maybe I just need to find other things, to think about!!!!!
