Hi everyone! New guy here, and I'm wondering what type of arrows you use, homemade, wood, bamboo, carbon, etc.
The sporting good stores around here really only stock arrows for compounds, and have very limited traditional supplies and knowledge. So, I'm asking the "pros".
-
Aluminums mostly. 1916s and 1816s. I am not a pro, though!
-
Gold Tip XT Hunter 55/75 carbon shafts for me.
Bisch
-
Tapered cedar but just picked up some Douglas fir to try.
-
No pro here either, unless you count beer drinkin'.
Welcome aboard and I'm a wood shooter myself.
-
Gold Tip 5575 for me. When I feel I wont miss and I have a good backstop, I'll pull out my Aluminum 2117s.
-
Mostly parallel cedar but also some hickory and some Douglas Fir. I have made a few but most are purchased commercially. I used to shoot aluminum and liked it, but it seems there's some thing special about wood arrows and Hill bows.
-
Trad only carbons from 3 rivers and beman bow hunter carbons and surewood fir wood.
-
Normally Arrow Dynamic Trad Lites but, this year I'll be shooting Surewood shafts tipped with either Ribteks or Zwickey No Mercy's.
-
You should give Ted Fry at Raptor arcvhery a call. He's in Oregon and is great to talk to. I don't know how far he is from you, but might be worth a road trip.
-
My recommendation for woodies is Dave (Snag) of Wilderness Custom Arrows. Give him a ring. He is down in Eugene and a great guy to talk with.
-
Carbon express heritage 90 for me
-
Heritage Carbon Express 150 and 250.
-
I shoot a recurve ,specifically a Martin Hatfield which at my 27" draw pulls 62pounds. That bow will chew any spine arrow I throw at it.For the last year I ditched my carbons and switched to woodies.I was thrilled and shooting wood is addictive. That being said recently I started shooting Easton raider 55-70 carbon arrows. You will not find them on their website as they are made only for a big sporting goods retailer.I bought six last month and six again today for around 30$ after taxes. They come fletched with 4 " plastic vanes.I don't know why but they fly awesome out of my bow and I shoot from the self.go figure..
The only ones that I prefer more are the Easton fmj.But taking the price difference between the two it is the Raider that is the winner.
-
Aluminum out of my recurves - 2016, 2020, 2216 - depending on the particular bow.
Wood out of my HHA longbows and my sinew backed Ed Scott owl mesquite sinew backed bows - footed hexshafts from Whisperingwind arrows.
-
Gold Tip Traditional Blems 3555
-
I really like the durability and consistency offered by carbon shafts. My favorites are without a doubt the Arrow Dynamics Traditionals.
-
Been loving Beman MFX Classic 500's and 600's. Only problem is I think they discontinued them. It's high time I switched to wood full time anyway.
-
GT 1535's and 3555's, when I retire and have the time for wood, I'll try them.
-
2219's with a 175 grain WW...
-
Beman Classics and Easton Axis.
Bill
-
Welcome :campfire: I shoot gold tip 3555's trads and expedition hunters.
-
Easton Bloodline 400s and tapered sitka spruce for my longbows
Beman ICS Hunters and 5/16 sitka spruce for my recurves. :archer:
-
Beman Classics and Easton Axis.
Bill
-
Carbon Express Maxima Blue Streak for me. Carbons.
-
Beman ICS Hunters
-
Wood. Douglas Fir grown in Oregon to be exact!
-
My only problem with wood, is that I'd be to afraid to damage such a work of art!

Life is way too short to hunt with ugly arrows! ;)

Joe...that's the 5.5" Swift fletch. 3Rivers sells the chopper for it.
I'd like to see a 5" version, but my arrows fly really great with that fletch and quite a few guys like it.
-
I only use wood arrows as well. I don't really have the time or skill to make my own, so I buy mine from Ted at Raptor Archery. I prefer the Raptor cut fletching for both the looks and performance with selfbows. And I agree that life is too short to hunt with ugly arrows haha
-
Gold Tip 5575 and or 2016 Aluminum
-
Beman ICS Hunters and
Easton xx75 Gamegetters
Depending on the bow I am shooting.
-
Two of my bows like Traditional Only carbon 400, two other bows like aluminum 2117.
All four of these bows are Bear TDs from 50 to 53 pounds with SBD 6strand strings. Regular FF strings would require much weaker spine.
-
Man, it seems as though there is a lot more wood arrow guys on here than I had thought. I have heard a lot of mixed reviews on wood and I have always shot GT 5575s or 2117s. I have been contemplating buying some woodies for my new to me HH Owl. The only issue I am having is getting the right one's. I can't just swap out tips and what not, while tuning the bow if they don't spine well.
-
Beman MFX Classics 400's. Bought the last doz. of the last one's I could find last wk. and they will most likely last me.
-
"To aluminum, or carbon, that is the question:
Whether 'tis Nobler in the mind to suffer
The Slings and Arrows of outrageous Fortune,
Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles...."
" I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me wood, or give me death. "
I'd rather have wood than suffer the arrows of outrageous fortune against a sea of troubles.
-
Wood-hickory, poplar, ash, ramin, fir, spruce, laminated birch, chundoo.
-
WOOD- wood is good!
-
POC out of my MOAB longbow and xx75 and gt 55/75 out of my Bear Kodiak..

You can, actually. 3rivers makes a glue on adapter that weighs in at about 50 grains and lets you screw on any point you want.
-
Easton ST. Axis with 75 gr. insert
-
Woods that I put together myself.
-
Traditional Guy,
Thanks, I did not know that. Maybe I will give the woodies a go.
-
river cane arrows or bamboo or poc arrows and sometimes carbon
-
I currently make (put together) all my arrows. I have been shooting GT1535 Trads out my bought bows (FF string)and POC woodies out of my selfbows. I am planning on going to woodies for all my bows. Hint Hint. They are the most fun to shoot.

surewoods with wild turkey fletchings (http://i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj633/darinputman/IMG_20130610_233156.jpg) (http://s1271.photobucket.com/user/darinputman/media/IMG_20130610_233156.jpg.html)

Great looking arrows guys! I think I'm going to shoot bamboo, until I can take the wood arrow class at Raptor Archery.
-
I mainly shoot wood, Surewood douglas fir and tapered chundoo. Also shoot some aluminum 2018,2020, and 2216.
-
Carbon express and gold tip
-
Easton ACCs, been working for many years for me.
-
This year..... Easton Legacy 2016's Fletched by my youngest son Tyler!!! It's time for him to learn to fletch/build arrows.
Over the years, I have shot mostly wood arrows built by fellow TradGanger, and good friend, Joe Skipp. I also have about 20 Autumn Orange 2016s that belonged to a dear friend, who's passed on... Joe crown dipped, crested, and refletched them and they are used only for hunting arrows.
I'm getting together a supply of Legacy shafts & feathers, for Tyler to get started. He is VERY EXCITED, and depending on how ambisious he gets over the summer... We may be shooting aluminium for a LONG time!!!!!
-
Being a beginner I recommend starting with aluminum or carbon. Reason being you will want to master your shooting form and these two options are much easier to tune consistently from shaft to shaft. If you begin with wood and you have bad arrow flight you may not know if it is the arrow or you that needs adjustment.
And
Welcome from Kentucky!
-
Good point KentuckyTJ. Thanks for all the helpful insight fellas.
-
2018'S
-
Tree Killer,
Where did you purchase those woodies or did you build them yourself? Those arrows are beauties!

Dennis...Thanks! I build them for myself and others.
-
Cedar from 3 Rivers, 125 G. field point. Next month I'm ordering the same arrows but with 125 G. Zwickey Eskimoes for deer season.
-
Easton FMJs in 500,400 and 340 spine depending what bow I'm shooting.
Grouse
-
Whatever i can pick up dirt cheap or free though i prefer aluminum. I did Buy 50 bamboo shafts off the auction site They make sweet flying arrows. Tips are just ugly as the best tips i've found are sharpened duplex nails.
-
GT 3555's. 29.5 inches with 200 up front. 4 4inch shield cuts. Easton Super 3D nock. 7 inch wrap from OneStringer. Factory supplied point insert, 75 grn steel taper with a 125 grn Ace broadhead epoxied. Im at 9 gpp. Perfect flight, no need to tinker any further.

Here's a couple that I like to shoot. Both are Surewood douglas fir in the 65/70# w/ 145gr pts. I am thinking up another design for a yew wood selfbow I just built. Have to fill orders first!
