Hey all,
I finally had a chance to really get shooting with my new self bow. Obviously this is a huge difference from my compound.
Right now, I'm getting pretty good arrow flight using Carbon Express 6075 arrows with a 125 gr field tip. At 10 yards, about 6" penetration into a new foam target.
The builder of this bow has harvested a deer with this thing using an old arrow he found in the garage (don't ask), but I'm trying to figure out which direction to go here? I have some 3 blade, 100 gr Muzzy or some 145 gr 2 blade Magnus.
I'm thinking the two blade will give me better penetration, but am worried about getting the arrow too heavy.
Any thoughts?

From a self bow I would guess you'd want a mid-weight or heavy arrow, preferably made of wood. I would, anyway. :dunno:

Thanks. I moved to a heavier field tip and it seems to be flying better.

I'm pretty sure it's against the law to shoot carbons out of a self bow. Just sayin...

I tried shooting carbon one time from a "self bow", think it caused a glitch in the Matrix...In all seriousness though, would help to know more info. Such as, bow draw weight at what draw length, your draw length, does the bow have a cut in shelf, etc. There are guys on here who have probably forgotten more about this subject than I know, but my guess is, unless that is an 80+ pound self bow, you're overspined. Spine weight and physical weight are 2 completely different things and while probably good to up the physical weight, adding that tip weight decreased the spine of the arrow. Not knowing measurements above, can't say if that was good or bad. As far as the broadhead question, yes, you will generally get better penetration from a cut on contact 2 blade than anything else. Get us some more info and I bet we get you straightened out,

HA! I had a feeling I was going to catch hell for using those carbons. I'm not sold on them, I just had them here from my compound and was looking for a starting point. Now I know!
So at this point, the bow is 63" and 60" when strung with a 22" draw. I haven't had a chance to run to a nearby bowshop to check the draw weight, but I'm betting it's somewhere around 45-50lbs.
No cutout for the arrow, just a little bear "toothbrush" looking rest that sits about 2" above center. My nocking point is 1/8" high of the rest.
