Title: Home made bird head
Post by: frassettor on June 09, 2013, 04:11:00 PM
This fall I will be trying my hand at pheasant hunting with a buddy of mine. It was difficult to try and find an aluminum arrow and head combination that was the same weight to what I am used to shooting with my carbons. After some testing and experimenting, I think I came up with a perfect combination, They fly great! .... If I can do my part

Testing the flu flu to make sure it flies the same as my carbons.

Phesants are tough birds, if I was you I would use a broadhead in place of that field point. Good Luck.

I was going to Danny, but The fella that owns the place doesn't want broadheads incase I cant find an arrow and another dog may accidently step on the arrow with a broad head on it and hurt itself

I suggested the smaller profile Magnus bullheads?  But on edit here I just saw your response on broadheads.

Let me ask this...do you think I will have more "killing" power with an Ace hex blunt then with this setup?

Looks kinda like it will slow you way down. The only pheasant I ever shot with trad was with a steelforce and it still got away but I guess that was my fault. The hexes are deadly on small game but not sure about pheasants. There are different breeds among ringnecks and the size will vary. If you hunt the smaller type Ill bet a hexhead will stick in the at your weight. Look into the vpa heads too.

Just to give you another possibility to consider ... what about a field tip with a small game, penetration limiting, grasshopper type adapter that goes between the arrow and the field tip. They make them 25 grains. The one I like is bent pointed jagged metal. It goes through small game but leaves a ragged ripped hole. I might have a picture,  ill check when I get home. Good luck and take pictures!

I agree with Danny! After having hunted pheasants a few times I will guess that yours will bounce off and most pheasants will just fly away.

If you are not using a dog, then go with a broadhead. If you are using dogs go with something that will stay in the bird. The best I have found is just a field point.

These look to be a pretty good idea too, but I have not tried them yet:   http://www.clarkbroadheads.com/pheasant-broadheads/
