Title: "Side Stalker" Quiver Question???
Post by: woodchucker on June 04, 2013, 07:58:00 PM
Hello My Friends & Brothers!!!!!

The old woodchucker has a question for you folks.....

I have always used either a backquiver, or a bowquiver for all of my shooting & hunting. I have never been much of a "side quiver" guy.

Many years ago, at a 3-D shoot with my oldest son. We talked and shot with a man that was using a "side stalker" type of quiver. I really intriuged me,and I have thought about buying one from time to time. However, due to the cost, and mostly, the fact that I have plenty of quivers that I am perfectly happy with... I never did.

Last night, on the St. Jude's Auction, I was awarded the winning bid on a Bauer style quiver, donated by our Dear fellow TradGang Brother, "Mudd"!!! Helping the kids, more than justified the cash layout, (even if I do have more than enough quivers, LMAO!) I am very excited, and looking forward to trying out my new quiver!!!!!

My question is, Has anyone had experiance (good or bad) and any comments about using these style of quivers?????

Any and all comments and info, is GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks, My Friends!!!!! woodchucker

Congrats on the win and thank you for helping the kids!
Side stalker style quivers are my favorite and all I use. I did modify the strap do it can hang more vertically. I keep my strap loose and am able to maneuver the quiver as needed thru cover. Easy arrow access and I like the fact I can take it off when I get to "my spot" for the day. Nothing like shooting bare bow.

I'm planning to build one for myself and would also like to hear comments.

Thanks for your contribution to the auction and for starting this thread.

Yes, I have a Jack Bowers Chief model that I love and have had for a few years--wouldn't let it go!  No bad experiences with it. Arrows are easy to access and remove or return to the quiver, minimal hand motion when using compared to a back quiver (which I also love). Easy to look down and see which arrow you are extracting if you have different types in your quiver--like a blunt for practice when out hunting.  I just use a different color shaft for my blunts so as not to confuse them with my broadheads. Nice quiver. Thanks for supporting the St. Jude auction, by the way!

I have used one on and off for the last 5 years or so.  I like mine.  I find I use it most when hunting with a backpack on or when my daughter was younger and would ride in one of those backpack kid carriers while my wife and I shot 3d.

A lot of us here in the NW use the side quiver.  Jack is from Western WA and just recently retired from his leather making to concentrate on his banjo making/picking.  Others have tried to copy his design, but Jack made the best and the original.

I'm sure this model will still be around for a long time since it is very versatile and convenient to use.

I use a Great Northern Sidekick. To me it is all upside, the only thing I've added is one of the light, waterproof fletch covers that slides over the fletched arrows end and ties to the quiver frame with a short section of small dia. bungee cord. It stays in place as you remove an arrow out and forward. It comes off in fair weather, 3d etc.. All around a great quiver.

I'm another who likes the original Jack Bower side stalker.  It's very well thought out and convient.  I usually hunt with a bow quiver but if I'm not it's because I'm carrying one of Jack's quivers.

I also have a Jack Bowers (variation on the Chief).  I've put a lot of miles on it and it my tree and still-hunting and stumping needs very well.

I have had one for years now and it was the first quiver I bought after getting into traditional archery. Found it on the Dean Torges website.

Very easy to access arrows when hunting, moving, or shooting and the design allows you to keep it out of the way.

I wish my quiver was a little longer and held the arrows in a little better. I have a Safari Tuff as well that keeps everything enclosed and it works well too. Just a little bulkier than my Side Stalker.

Maybe a stupid question..... (Hey, Old Woodchucker never claimed to be the sharpest broadhead in the quiver!)

It was listed as a "Bauer Style Quiver"...

It it possible it's a Bower??? Instead of a "Bauer" (like Eddie Bauer)???

I just got one from Archery Past at Packwood, and discovered I was wearing it backwards...  Woodchucker, you don't have anything to worry about!  Once I figured out why all my arrows were spilling out when I bent down to retrieve one from the foam deer, magically, the thing began to really work!  Now I'm beginning to think this might be my main quiver!  I've tried a ton of other quivers, and never found one I liked until now!

I've hunted with the Side Stalker by Jack Bower for about 20 years & love it. Never heard of the quiver referred to as a "Bauer" style so may be a 'sound alike' mispelling.

When you get your quiver the best thing to do is take it stumping.....I think your going to love it once you give it a go. Just my thoughts

Do those quivers have a plug of foam for your points or are they just the sewn leather on the end?

I used a side quiver by 3rivers similar to the one pictured here before the G.N. Sidekick and if you went through brush what fell off ended up down with the foam hood and arrow points. I have friends out west who noticed this plus snow. The Sidekick rides more horizontally and remains cleaner and drier.

Plug of foam but it comes out.  I carry five broadheads and two blunts while deer hunting or remove the foam and carry 18 blunts stumping or a mix for bunnies & small game.

On my third foam plug.  I just cut a new one from the closed cell foam PCs come with (from work).

Here's a shot while bunny hunting (just after deer closed) showing how you have access to choose different arrows as needed.  To push through brush you just keep it tucked up against your ribs - quiet and not bulky.  I have a file on mine to touch-up broadheads.

Just noticed it's in my avatar as well.  It's been a great quiver.
