I was curious if anyone ever tried hunting with an English longbow?
Other than Robin Hood I mean.
I got nothing brother, just hated leaving without saying something. I don't think you'll get many takers on this one.
To clarify, I don't see many guys in this forum talking about English longbows or even selfbows. Most are shooting "modern" recurves and longbows. Just my perception...
Just go for it. Who cares if no one else does. If it floats your boat, you should try it.
Northwest Bowhunter,
Take a look at this group of guy's. I'm VERY interested in the English longbow as well as this group. I would hunt with one in a heart beat. I would like to join up with these folks but I don't as of yet have any of this type of gear...

I hunted with mine some last season. No game taken but I will take it again this year.
I think it would be awesome personally if I had one and had lots of time to pursue game. Cool link timberking, did y'all notice our very own Shaun Webb is on there. Maybe he'll chime in!!

Not sure why you would think that? :dunno:
I've hunted with mine quite a bit in years past. Lots of fun. Shooting one makes me feel somehow closer to the essence of archery.
English longbows are still my favorite type bow though I must admit I don't shoot them as much as I once did. My avatar is an English archer stringing his longbow over his back.
Thanks for posting the link to my Rangers' site Dave.
I've taken a doe, boar and a few squirrels with my English longbow and self-nocked, medieval-style arrows. I took my last few critters with an osage ELB that Shaun Webb made for me, but now I have a yew longbow with horn-nocks from Shaun that I will hunt with this fall. He makes authentic medival-style longbows that are tillered round-compass (bends through the handle, with no shelf or handle wrap).
Speaking of Shaun, he was a medieval hunting beast earlier this year, and he is now the third Ranger out of nearly 50 to earn the Master Huntsman ranking.
Of course, many people hunt with ELBs without dressing up funny, but I like trying to recreate a slice of history and get a sense of what the 'Trad Gang' that came way before us was like.
Paul, do you have the link to your thread about your doe kill?
I looked last night but couldn't find it.
CTT
I think you grabbed the wrong two links Chuck, those are some of Paul's Howard Hill harvests.
Here is his ELB deer thread:

Yes, Yew English longbow by Don Adams, 72" 75#@ 28"

I met this big coon coming down the trail towards me one evening, He ended up in the cooking pot. :D

ELB's make great hunting bows. I took one hunting this past fall and saw more game than on any other hunt previously that year- 2 does, 2 bucks, and a whole family of hogs. That yew ELB had some mojo. I almost got a hog but some gun hunters came up on my position and scared em all away.
Thanks Thom.
That's what Pope and Young hunted with.....
I think it is great. If I had one, I surely would hunt with it!
I killed this Blacktail buck in 1990 with an ELB made by John Strunk.

Ron & TK,
Pretty cool pictures. I wish I had taken more pictures is years past.
Thank you everyone, this has redoubled my spirit to try it this year. I live in fairly rural NW Washington and have deer and smaller critters (Ron, how do you cook raccoon?) in my backyard.
Cool stuff, something else to play with in the future.
Jacques Bonin from here hunted with them,, when I met him he used welchmans and turned me onto them I rememeber he loved the cast with a heavy arrow but maybe he will chime in..
Ok, I have been shooting mine for the past few weeks and I have a second question. How do I keep from being cut by the fletchings? Do I have to wear a glove, I have read that just shooting with a higher nocking point will do it.
Anyone that shoots them know a few good tricks?
Yep. 74", 50# ERC of roughly ELB design. Cut in nocks rather than horn nocks though.
google Shawn Woods longbow and view the face book video. Absolutely a great video. A Blacktail buck from the crotch of tree. 70" selfbow primitive arrow and head.
There's a very good chance I'll be hunting with an English longbow this fall. I've recently been on a yew kick, I've got a yew flatbow started and a few good staves set aside for English longbows.
Northwest. Move Your NocksAround A Bit Or Use Different Wing Feathers, Which Will Shift Their Location At The Arrow Rest. Or, Wear A Glove.

Like I said, ELB's just have natural mojo. I got lucky yesterday and snapped up a YEW John Strunk ELB, 70" 45@28 off the classifieds...it hadn't hardly been up a minute haha..wonders of the iPhone. I'm glad cause I hated selling that osage Strunk ELB I had, but the 58@27 was not fun to always short draw. This new one is gonna get some deer or hogs I know it!

Just Pope, Young used a Osage flat "American " style bow
Cool pics!
My first traditional harvest was a whitetail doe out of a tree stand with a Gary sent an old fashion longbow 65#68" length doe was shot at 15 yards broadside, lung shot deer ran 40 yards. Very quiet bow deer did not know what happened nice experience.
Got a chance to draw one when I visited The Tower of London recently. It drew very easily for its poundage to me.
If I had one in my weight range I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with it.
The two I own are not gonna do it for me as one is very light wt(20 plus) and the other is a favorite of mine as it was a gift from my friend John. (90 plus) Way too much bow for my old shoulders.
God bless,Mudd
