Title: Tabs too short
Post by: Arrowstorm on June 04, 2013, 09:07:00 AM
Looking for a thicker tab that covers my fingers to the tips.  I shoot 3-under but am open to a split finger tab that works.  Problem is all the tabs I try are too short and the string catches my fingertips on release.  After a while it gets a bit old (and sore).  I've tried Black Widow split and 3 under, Neet 3 under and S.A.M. split.

Any other ideas?  Thanks!

Make your own.  Buy some leather of the right thickness (I used to get mine from a local leather store that made belts and such).  I used a tab I bought as a pattern.  You can extend the length to where if fits your fingers. I like leather that is pliable but thick enough to protect my fingers and allow the string to slide off the fingers as a unit.

It use to be have the same problem. I started making my own tabs as suggested by many others on this site out of scrap leather. I like mind thinner but I sure you could glue or stitch a few pieces together. I hope this helps.

When you wrap your fingers with the tab on around your string, the tab should just cover you finger tips. This means, that if you are not shooting but wearing the tab, your finger tips should not be covered but rather sticking out as though the tab is too short.

When shooting with a tab, one should want as little leather as practical in contact with the string, this gives the best release and is how the tab is meant to be used. If you want your fingers totally covered upon release, I would try a glove because your ending up with the same thing if you want the tab to completely cover your finger tips when the hand is open.

Hope this helps.

I agree, a tab that is too short on the fingers is sure an aggravation..  I think that tab makers don't consider that all folks don't have the same length fingers.. The Black Widow tabs work for me and I bought several when they were offering them in cordovan.

However, I've tried a few others that were short.
It's easy to trim them but if they're already to short we're SOL ...

Thanks for all the help!  I've got some auto upholstery leather tucked away.  Think I'll try making one.  My current glove is starting to show its age.  I'd like to try one of the American Leathers Big Shot Crossover gloves, but at that price, my wife would never talk to me again.

Again, thanks everyone.

I made a three under tab last week.  It was too short as you describe.  I simply pulled out the pocket knife and extend the tab hole until it fit. Good luck

I have some leather I can send you if you'd like to try making your own.

It isn't real thick (probably medium to thin) but i like the feel of it.  If you're interested shoot me a PM.
